Apple Investigates iOS 4 Bogging Down iPhone 3G
Has the latest iPhone firmware made your 3G sad?
If you have an iPhone 3G and you've installed iOS 4, you've probably noticed that your phone is now slower than molasses in winter.
Some users who have upgraded to the new iOS 4 have forced a downgrade back to iOS 3.1.3, while others may be thinking that this is the end of the line for their two-year-old device.
One conspiracy theory is that Apple intentionally made the iPhone 3G slower so that customers would have an extra incentive to upgrade to the iPhone 4 now that they're nearing the end of their contracts.
For those who are hanging on to their iPhone 3G, however, there is hope. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple said that it is looking into the performance issues relating to iOS 4 and the iPhone 3G.
Such issues involve slowed performance, decreased battery life, and excessive heat. Are you experiencing the same problems? Sound off in the comments below!

its probably because iphone 3g has a pathetic amount of RAM
Don't worry a free case will probably fix this too.
its probably because iphone 3g has a pathetic amount of RAM
So it's a perfect reason to upgrade to the magical and revolutionary iPhone 4!! /sarcasm
why would they have to itice them to buy the new iphone. apple fans are sheep they don't need a reason to ditch the old and get the new
Sound off what? Are you trying to start a android vs ios debate?
So it's a perfect reason to upgrade to the magical and revolutionary iPhone 4!! /sarcasm
4 times the RAM is actually a pretty good reason.
Of course there's also the whole "phone" part that may not work as well...

Question. If Apple fans are the sheep you idiotically generalize them all to be, how would this article even exist?
...and cue the Iphone bashing punks coming here to comment...losers!
what? a bug ? in an Apple product? how its possible???
how a perfect company with perfect product can suffer issues?
no... the media are bugged, not Apple!!! stop saying there is problems please
Its really the Apple year! a lot of marketing, a lot of bugs and a lot of non-tested products!
Apple really want to become better than Microsoft in all part of the market
next step? viruses!!!
You would think that PC users would understand that increased software calculations/complexity requires more processing power...
...and cue the Iphone bashing punks coming here to comment...losers!
The only punk I see posting a loser comment is you.
Ever since I "upgraded" Ios4 my phone has been terrible. Does anyone know how I can downgrade?
Yes, I have noticed all of these things.
The extra heat really sucks..
It's quite clear that the processor and memory capacity of the 3G is just not capable of handling the new revision of the OS. I've even heard of the 3GS suffering a small amount from the update. Apple really needs to think things through, and properly test their products BEFORE release. Look what happens when you don't.
My 3G is slower too since OS4. And no you cant safely downgrade. It is possible but you risk bricking your phone, its harder on Windows than Mac to downgrade. I havent tried it since reading the instructions.
its probably because iphone 3g has a pathetic amount of RAM
it has 128 meg!!! how much do you need?? the ps3 only has 256 meg!
the ds made do with FOUR meg!
further more, it worked fine BEFORE, why should an UPDATE make it WORSE!?
conspiracy theory or not: it has worked with many apple bollards, proudly stating how they are upgrading to the iphone 4 because their 3G was made slow by the last update!
you have to remember, the update didn't even add any features to the 3G! no multitasking! not even backgrounds!! just folders!
it is completely unacceptable.
There's no problem. Apple is gonna come back and tell 3GS users that they're holding it wrong.
I am done with Apple iPhone and A T & T. Lousy coverage is Wisconsin and lousy performance on a 3G that I have only had for 14 months..

I remember when i upgraded to ios 4, i commented that it seemed faster. However that didn't last long! Its slow! Its slow at loading web pages, i've given up on the online games because they don't work and the keyboard can't keep up with me!
I decided to upgrade to the iphone 4 when Apple started advertising it. However I think the performance of my 3G has definitely given me incentive to do it now, and i placed an order online at 12am this morning!
I still have faith that Apple will fix things. Just look how good the iMac is! We all have to remember that they are making leaps and bounds in mobile technology! Maybe they should wait a little longer to test thing better, but it must be hard for a company at the top with the cutting edge tech, that everyone other company looks up to and wishes they had, to make a society of Tech hungry people with an attitude of i want it and i want it now!, to wait.
Apple has really been hitting some homeruns here lately. Problems coming outta the woodwork
I have a 3GS and it is noticeably slower. Battery life has decreased as well. I wiped my device thinking i needed to free up space, but this had no positive effect. Issue remains.
I don't doubt Jobs' shifty tactics. Does anyone remember what Jobs said in regards to signal strength bars after the death grip bar drop stuff?..."we messed up and were a little to liberal with our algorithm"... WHAT!!??! how can you be "a little to liberal" with an algorithm?? you intentionally falsified signal strength information to make more money! and then he goes on to say we only want to make our customers happy...total BS. I love apple, but lately they act like Manny Ramirez; clueless in left field.
I have a 3GS. Its true that iOS 4 made it a little less stable -- sometimes running like 6 apps at once makes programs force quit.
Now its about as reliable as Windows 7.
Apple really owed it to 3g customers to have tested speed, and battery life before updating to 40s and put out a warnaing so we knew not to do this. It would have been easy to test and do, but Apple should now be really condemnded and actualkly penalized by either lawsuits or something if not fixed in a very short time since it's already been about a month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But "it just works" right?
I am a current 3G owner. The performance nose-dived after I went to iOS4. Screen transitioning lags horribly. Apps lag horribly. Random hang-ups. Heck, even texting lags now. It was smooth with OS 3.1. Screw going to a iPhone 4. After my contract is up, I am done with iPhone/ATT. Droid X looks very appealing now.
Even my 3GS is slower. Typing on it is a pain in the ass now. My friends don't notice it (they aren't as sensitive to response times as I am), but it's infuriating to have to wait for the phone to catch up when I'm typing out a text.
Yes, I have this problem, my texting is very sluggish, it hangs up when sending text, simply typing on it is horrible. I am thinking of trying to downgrade back to a lower OS.
My 3GS isn't slow at all unlike you people are saying. But my iPhone 3G is slow as f!!!! Seriously the 3GS has 200MHz more speed than the 3G and just double the RAM it's kind of wierd how that much makes so much difference.... My 3GS performs as snappy as my iPhone 4. Meanwhile the 3G it's not even close.
I am having that problem and thinking about switching to Droid X.
It's cause they're holding it wrong.
