Apple shortly after midnight rolled out the iPhone and iPod Touch 2.2 firmware, bringing about several new features and bug fixes.
While firmware 2.2 for the iPhone doesn’t come with as much urgency as the previous 2.1, which patched 3G call reception, the just-released update brings about several appreciable features.
Users of Google Maps will now have the option of seeing Street View, though it works best when connected to Wi-Fi, making it a less thrilling experience when actually walking. Those who do walk can make use of the new walking and public transit directions.
For unknown reasons, the expanded Google Maps features are not a part of the 2.2 firmware for iPod Touch. Apple has yet to explain why the feature is only a part of the iPhone.
Podcasts can now be downloaded over-the-air, though the same downloading rule applies that anything over 10 MB must be transferred when connected to Wi-Fi.
Other improvements include a tweaked Safari and Mail, better sound quality from visual voicemail, and plugs for gaping security holes. Users who aren’t a fan of the iPhone’s predictive auto-correcting keyboard (which we find absolutely essential), can now turn the feature off.
The 246 MB update can be had through iTunes. Post your impressions below in the comments!
