Invisible Dresses Coming Soon

No, not THAT kind of invisible dress

A bunch of students at Shih-Chien University in Taiwan are working on a dress that can potentially become invisible. Now before you get excited, said dress will make the wearer invisible as well.

In a sense, invisibility is just transparency applied. The dress—if and when fully developed—will make use of a textile-based display, or display technology directly integrated into the cloth. The system takes what the camera at the back sees, and projects it on the textile display up front. The ideal result? The wearer becomes effectively invisible, literally and visual blending into the background. It's just like that car in Die Another Day.

A lot is needed to make it all work though. There's the problem of actually developing the textile display, and invisibility that works from only one side has pretty limited application. No doubt, it's actually easier to develop a dress that turns invisible on the transparent level, leaving its wearer exposed. Still, any form of effective, achievable invisibility would be cool, so stay tuned for updates on this project, and on the state of artificial invisibility in general.
