Buffalo iPod Dock Offers Built-In 500GB Storage
It's a hardcore iPhone owner's dream come true: a docking station that provides 500 GB of storage.
Owners of the iPhone and iPod Touch already know how quickly precious hard drive space can be eaten up by movies, TV shows, music, and applications backed up locally by iTunes. It doesn't take much for HD episodes of Marcus' favorite show The Wire to consume space normally used by games. Now there's hope, a way to charge the Apple device and store media without diminishing local storage.
Buffalo Technology revealed its Buffalo Dualie earlier today at CES 2010, an iPhone / iPod Touch docking station with a built-in hard drive. According to the company, this charging/storage station looks just as sleek as the connected device, offering a "chic brushed aluminum and black soft touch two-tone finish." But naturally the meat of this cool gadget is its generous 500 GB capacity, offering plenty of space for all that juicy downloaded media.
In addition to the HDD, the Buffalo Dualie provides both a USB 2.0 and a FireWire 800 port on the actual drive, and an additional two-port USB 2.0 hub on the docking station. The HDD is HFS+ formatted for Macs by default, making it quite not so ideal for PC consumers. However, after a few tweaks, it's possible to re-format the HDD in NTFS for a PC.
The drawback is that the Dualie costs $249.99, and can only be purchased through Apple.com or an Apple Store. Still, for hardcore iPhone and iPod Touch owners who are constantly battling for more storage space, Buffalo's Dualie docking station may be the perfect solution... until it too runs out of space. Meh.

o-la-la
the Dualie costs $249.99
Surely, you must be joking.
"I'm not joking, and don't call me Shirley."
I don't have an iphone. Please, someone edumicate me. Can I or can't I use an iphone usb cable and attach that to my computer/external hard drive?
if someone wrote an app to display the file/folder info and open files then yeah, although i dont think one exists at the moment
@sunflier - this is just an iPod dock and an external hard drive put together into one package. It doesn't actually do anything a separate hard drive and a separate dock wouldn't do.
But no, you can't directly attach an iPhone to a storage device.
I can build one for under $100, just buy a cheap 2.5 inch 500GB external enclosure, and a cheap USB hub
leave one end of the external enclosure open for easy removal of the 2.5 in drive inside of the enclosure, glue the enclosure to the back of the ipod dock, then glue the hub to the bottom of the dock/ hard drive
you just saved $150 by doing it your self (most people who have a ipod generally have the dock since it comes with it so no need to worry about the dock)
while it wont look as nice, it will do the same job for less money
you can get a 2.5 in external 500GB drive for under $75
you can get a 8 port USB hub for less than $2 from ebay
you can get a 12 pack of super glue for under $1 from ebay
the ipod dock comes with your ipod
build it your self and save
