Report: New iPhone will be 4G Verizon Device

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

We're just a few weeks away from Apple's annual WWDC and what everyone is assuming will be the iPhone 4G launch. One of the bigger and more interesting rumors about the device is what network it will be on.

Everyone is referring to the the next iteration of Apple's smartphone as the iPhone 4G, 4G in this instance standing for 'fourth generation'. However, recent reports suggest the iPhone 4G may actually be a 4G LTE device. Engadget reports getting several tips about this year's iPhone launching as Verizon's first 4G smartphone.

" … This is pretty difficult to believe and we don't want to get your hopes up only to have them smashed into a million pieces -- it'll supposedly even be a 4G launch device," writes Chris Ziegler. "We've gotten surprisingly specific details both from Verizon employees and tipsters whose companies are supposedly under NDA with Verizon to test enterprise deployments of the handset later this year, and they're all sending basically this same message."

Engadget goes on to say that this isn't going to be an LTE exclusive (rather LTE is just being included as a publicity stunt) and that because Verizon's LTE coverage is likely to be very patchy at launch there's little doubt that this would be a CDMA/LTE dual-mode deal capable of working anywhere on the carrier's network.

If it's true, it's bad news for AT&T, which up until now has been the exclusive carrier in the U.S. However, Ziegler highlights Apple's habit of only pushing out minor hardware updates each year and suggests that Cupertino could opt for CDMA this year and leave the LTE update until June 2011.

I don't know whether to believe either carrier's claims about superior 3G coverage. I know there are deficiencies in ATT's coverage. Before switching I would want to do some research to determine the real story behind Verizon's coverage.

Even though ATT is not the best company in the world, there are clues that Verizon might be an even worse company to deal with, such as their overly unfair early termination fee.

If you look it up, any benchmark will show you the same thing - AT&T's speed is quite a bit faster than Verizon's and Verizon's coverage is way better than AT&T's.

hell yes!
I know most people on this site bash apple to bits, but I love my iPhone 3G, even more now that it's jailbroke at 3.1.3. The thing I hated most was switching from Verizon of (9 years of loyal verizon service) to AT&T where I dropped more calls in the first two weeks than I did in 9 years on verizon.

Don't get me wrong, I've been wanting to try a droid. But give me a jailbroke iPhone 4G on Verizon and I doubt there's getting much better than that (provided they include flash, and maybe even play cry... :).

4g or No, just having 2 different carriers is a huge benefit to the potential customers. ATT sucks in your area, go Verizon, Verizon sucks go ATT.

Can you intentional misuse established terminology related to your product to mislead people? Calling there device "4G" and making up a new meaning is deceptive. Can an automaker advertise a car as having 550 HP, when what they really mean by HP is "hamster power"?

I'd have to move to the U.S. to get Verizon, so no...

I ditched Verizon to get an iPhone from AT&T, but can't really compare the two services, as my iPhone is my first foray into data on a handheld device. However, getting away from Verizon's god-awful customer service was fantastic.

Realistically, I couldn't switch back anyway, as I've still got another year on my AT&T contract, and am in no mood to shell out extra cash for cancellation fees, new activation fees, and another iPhone. In any event, I'm perfectly happy with AT&T's service for the most part. I'd like it if I could tether my iPhone, but all things considered, I've never had any issues with my AT&T coverage that have caused me to consider a different carrier.

I am considering ditching my iPhone altogether for a Droid, though, but that's another story entirely.

AT&T's speed is not "quite a bit faster." It is slightly faster as in you won't notice much of a difference in speed unless you are running bandwidth benchmarks. The real difference between networks is coverage gaps. AT&T is chock full of them and Verizon is not. I'll gladly take a negligible drop in network speed if I gain network reliability.

I'm not sure I believe this story but I hope it's true. The only thing that was holding me back from wanting the 4th generation iPhone was that I can't stomach spending another 2 years on AT&T's god awful network. If this is a 4g iPhone on Verizon I'm definitely game. We'll have to wait until early June to find out I guess.

I'll be happy when AT&T loses it exclusivity with the iPhone, and I am on AT&T. AT&T is last in terms of new phones (android & palm mostly), and I can only assume its so they won't compete with the iPhone. Until that happy day I will stick with my Bold 9000.

If Verizon sucks in your area, odds are very strong that AT&T will be even worse...

Personally I'd say no, I'm going to go with an Android phone still.

Per say it was the BMW 550HP then it would be fine, its suggestive of 550 Horse Power, BUT any informed customer or potential customer would quickly find out it's not the case. It would only be "bad" for the company if the details of it's HP were hidden or concealed.

The idea of "2G" (or any other number) meaning generation is a longstanding Apple naming scheme and doesn't specifically mean it's going to be a 4G data phone, however I would be dissapointed if there was no competition for the EVO.

Can't wait for the new Verizon vs AT&T commercials. First the Coverage maps, next will be the "We have the best coverage and your best phone now what?"

My contract is up in June and I would drop AT&T like a bad habit if I had the option.

Everyone buy the iphone... keep apple on it's power trip, then some other guy will come along, open source of course, and will provide breakthroughs that apple will not allow. Piss the consumer off knowing no matter how wonderful their phone is, they will never get the apps and abilities that apple wont allow. Then the house of apples will come crumbling down (Jobs landing on his big ol pile of money to cushion the fall)

I would love a Verizon iPhone 4G. The problem is that Verizon has announced an end to unlimited data plans for 4G Devices. So the cost to operate the device could be too high. I almost wish they would release the iPhone 3GS on Verizon instead.

My ideal scenario would be the 4g iPhone on the new Sprint 4g network... If that does not happen, I am ditching my iPhone and AT&T for the HTC 4g Evo and Sprint.

Verizon does not allow voice and data simultaneously. That is a huge problem since I am almost always tethering (jailbroken 3.1.3). I can talk on the phone without losing my data connection on AT&T. Not possible with Verizon. I have had great coverage from AT&T and considerably less dropped calls compared to my old Sprint/Nextel phone. I plan on getting the 4G and I plan on sticking with AT&T.

Apple didn't say it is a 4G phone yet. This is the news outlets all calling it 4G which many assume the phone will support. NOTHING is official yet, all rumor and guessing. The thing here is that when anyone talks about the soon-to-be-announced next iPhone everyone calls it the 4G. GO search for "4G" on apple's site and you'll find nothing about the iPhone.

AT&T works well in my area. I'm not too thrilled with my Verizon experience in the past. My only gripe with AT&T is the price. $110 a month for one phone + data, no overages? Although it's almost worth it not having to deal with Verizon "Billing Errors" anymore.

I have been with AT&T ever since the first iPhone was released and I have not had any problems what so ever with them. There service is far greater than Verizon's poor customer service, and being the fact that AT&T has taken on the load and not been crippled by the fact of hosting the iPhone while making major improvements to their network is pretty good. Those thinking that Verizon hosting an iPhone will be outperforming, will be very pissed when the day comes of Verizon/iPhone exclusivity agreement and find that VERIZON Sucks.

I think anything's better than ATT right now. Im just tired of getting 2-3 dropped calls a day. But the dreaded contract termination fee is stalking me. Ill have to wait out the year I have left with my blackjack to be able to change. Hopefully the reviews of the new iPhone and hopefully on verizon, are good.

Id wait however till the iphone craze cools down and everyones already reviewed it and theres still some left on shelves to decide, but definitely noe returning to ATT.
