Report: Apple Sending Devs Dual-Core iPhone 4S
Just a beefed up iPhone 4, or the iPhone 5?
As is always the case with the release of a new iPhone, there are plenty of rumors regarding the upcoming iPhone 5. One of this year’s most prominent rumors is that the smartphone will benefit from the addition of the A5 chip that currently appears in the iPad 2.
The dual-core A5 processor is significantly more powerful than Apple’s A4 chip, and Apple is apparently helping prepare high level game developers prepare for the iPhone 5’s arrival by sending them each a beefed up iPhone 4 to work on. This information comes via a source over at 9to5Mac that calls the rigged out iPhone 4 ‘the iPhone 4S.’ The device is said to be “virtually identical” to the current iPhone 4 and an outsider wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two. The source says the device is locked in a safe at night.
Recent rumors regarding the iPhone 5 stated the phone would employ the same design as the iPhone 4, adding only improvements to the antenna. However, under the hood, the device would use Apple’s dual-core A5 CPU and also boast an 8-megapixel camera. It’s not yet clear if the devices sent to devs really are just beefed up iPhone 4 units that have been nicknamed the iPhone 4S, or if the iPhone 4S these companies are playing with really is the next generation iPhone. 9to5Mac reports that the OS on these devices is iOS 4, not the iOS 5 that the new iPhone is said to be shipping with.

If the screen isn't alot bigger, more than 4 inches it will be Fail.

Its an iphone, it could have a 1.5 inch screen and itll still be a success for most people that buys them
A smartphone should have a minimum of a 5-inch screen. Preferably it should have a 7-inch screen. Dell really knew what they were doing when they made the Streak 5. Dell just recently released an update for unlocked Streak 5's that includes Car Home software if you use your phone as a GPS unit or if you talk on the phone while driving (with a handsfree device of course, unless you're a complete and total moron).

not true...if you want a bigger screen then get a freaking netbook.....this is a cell phone we are talking about

wow...i guess americans like their phones the way they like their women....big and fat, lol
I want a smaller iPhone or Android dont care really they are both essentially the same. These bricks are too big.
Tom's really has to do something about these spammers.
No Spy-phone for me.
with people demanding so much from their smartphones, a dual core cpu upgrade is a welcome relief. plus a fix (finally?) to the antenna problem

I don't see having that big of a screen as a necessity at all. And I highly doubt it will be "Fail"...

Only fail here is people like you who don't understand what people want. Apple already did research and found a lot of people don't like phones with bigger screens because they are uncomfortable to hold in your hand.
This is especially true of woman. Why make a larger screen phone and make 50% of your potential customers pick something else because it "feels better" in their hands?
It's only the spec geeks that think bigger is better. Perhaps they're all compensating for something else that's not all it should be.
Isn't the the A5 CPU made by Samsung too ? So if they screw up things between them and Samsung with the things going on recently , won;t this affect the production of the new Iphones?
I would really like a smart phone with a 5.5 or 6 inch screen; maybe with a longer vertical dimension than is standard now. I have a Droid X now and find it to be slightly small. I am a tall man with big hands and thick fingers, and typing on the screen is awkward, especially in portrait orientation. I think there is definitely a sizable market for larger phones as well as smaller models. There should be an Iphone Nano and a larger version that is as close to tablet size as possible while still fitting in a pocket.
I personally find screen sizes within the 3.2 - 4.3 perfect for the average person. None of my friends, co-workers, or family have had screen problems within those sizes.

A lot of people point out this antenna issue that can easily be fixed by a case. I have a Nexus S right now and the bad thing that no one ever points out about android is the OS does a lot of weird things. I slide the talk bar to answer the phone on many occasions and it may freeze up for like 10 seconds after I slide it or the call system justs crashes. I have friends with Motorola Droids with the same problems. Whats the point of having all the customizable ability if the ability to make a phone call is crap.

Your the fail here pal I dont care about "most people" its all about having the biggest baddest phone on the block just like having the best car or house. Yes it makes me feel better to have the more expensive biggest thing most cant afford. Much like when i go to the local internet cafe with my $3000 Alienware M17x R3 and just by pulling it out it owns every other crap Acer or Sony Lap the other goobs bring there just by its existence lol.

That has always been my beef with the Android platform. Awesome idea, and competition all around is good, but until they fix things like this, I will continue to be an Apple "fanboi."
Lately the answer to Android's random lagging has been faster cpu's and more ram. This just equals degraded battery performance to me. I want something smooth and efficient when i'm on the road. For home use, i have my quad core win7 PC
A5 = SAMSUNG CPU.
Interesting that apple is biting the hand that feeds them!
Woooooo, he has an "Alienware" = WHOOPTY DO! What a friggin' LOSER! Next thing you'll hear is he has a Dell Streak.
Well...Obviously the answer is for apple to design a 5 inch device with a 7 inch screen.

So if i don't like a case on my iphone ? The antenna is a big problem, and i don't want a cheap fix. Also, I own the iphone 4 and the time to make a call is ridiculously long ... the lag between pressing the call button and the prompt is 5-6 secs. Also, the same with receiving calls.

@rahjs86 : I have an iPhone 4 and it's very snappy. I don't have the calling problems you have. Of course I use the bumper on mine but it is very unobtrusive and I would rather not take a chance of dropping my phone and shattering the glass.
If they are sending my data, location, back to Apple and who knows who else after that, then it's just a spyphone5. When my present iphone dies, I'm out.
@Vironmentalman: Location data is not sent back to Apple it is just store on the phone and backed up on your computer.

Not true. All of the collected location data is sent back to Apple. It doesn't really matter if the desktop iTunes software is sending the data or if the iPhone itself is sending the data to Apple, it's 100% completely wrong. Android collects location data differently than Apple. Android doesn't violate people's privacy like Apple does.

You do know that the Dell Streak does everything better than the iPhone don't you? You need to make sure you know what you're talking about before you start implying things like the Dell Streak is total crap when that's obviously not true.
Wow. People fighting over cell phone specs... the world is doomed.
A cell phone should have a minimum 15 inch screen.
New Spyphones, ZZZzzz

Alienware is a expensive item that doesn't do much.. I could buy a Asus laptop that can overclock and comes standard at 8 GB ram ddr3 1600 mhz. and an i7 at 2.66ghz..Don't waste money on crap when you can go cheaper and better...[/citation]
Also What the hell Eric.. are you a women? because you talk like one thats dumb as ****. Why make accusations like a Id10T. Also did Apple really look into it or were they just saying? Apple says many things it doesn't actually look into.. People get the Iphone for the brand, not how it runs or anything else. Android is a better seller and by statistics because of the selling point it has made it must be better and therefore something that people like. Androids have bigger screens because real nerds like more estate and that means more can be done or seen on a larger screen albeit I doubt many actually want a 7 in screen in their 5 inch pocket. a 4-5 inch is just fine because smart phones are for the browsing online experience and business details that need more data on one screen. Smart phones are made to be used and exploring items in life and a 3 in screen with a $100 month plan doesn't make sense to look on a webpage on that small of a screen.
I think the iPhone is a perfect size, but then again, I only have a 32-inch waist and wear pants that actually fit. I suppose if you look like Kevin Smith and wear those fat pants with giant pockets, a huge phone is easier to carry around.
