Swimmer Plays GTA IV for 55 Hours, Sets Record

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

That's longer than my total original play session!

Think you have some long gaming sessions that last into the wee hours of the night? They're no match for David Scherer, 19-year-old AustinPeayStateUniversity honors student, who played Grand Theft Auto IV for 40 hours and 21 minutes straight before breaking the record for playing a video game longer than anyone else in the world. And he kept on playing.

Scherer is an assistant coach for the Swimming Eagles in Ft. Campbell, Ky., and did the gaming record stunt in an effort to raise money to build a swimming pool for his team. While it's unknown if he raised enough money for a pool, he should almost certainly have his name in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest gaming session. Scherer ended his run with a total play session time of 55 hours and 30 minutes, according to Swimming World.

While sitting in one spot and moving one's thumbs and fingers may not seem like vigorous physical activity, the stamina required to stay awake in the virtual streets of LibertyCity does require some impressive endurance. Scherer credits his athletic training for the record.

"Swimming is the best type of exercise you can get," Scherer said after playing 48 hours, quoted UPI. "It is because of swimming that I'm able to do what I'm doing right now."

The longest I ever sat playing a video game was Halo 2 on the original Xbox. A friend and I played Co-Op for 21 1/2 hours uninterrupted. Granted, we each had the other to help stay awake... Either way, after that session I swore off games for the next month. I was so tired!

(I realize that's not very hardcore, I'm just sharing my experience!)

Wow, we're really stooping to new lows here for technical news. First of all, such a record is silly to begin with. Secondly, who cares ?

Talk about endurance. One day, o-n-e day gamers will be in the Olympics.

My longest on GTA IV is only 3.5 hours. I'm not very committed. :(

I'm almost 100% sure that this has been beaten but no one ever bothered to record it.

WOTLK expansion release for WoW for example... I know there was people that were up for more than 48+ hours leveling, took them roughly 3 days play-time to go from 70 to 80.

How does a violent video game help with school donations? Shouldn't he have swam for 50 hours or something?

I remember me and my best friend at 14 doing this ourselves. But it was 3 days. Alas, we took small breaks to eat, drink, walk, and go outside for a bit.

Not quite sure I see the similarity of the two statements you just posted therogerwilco...

Back on topic, while impressive in a weird way, what does it mean by "straight"? Clearly he had to have eaten, gone to the restroom, etc, right?

So, do they give him breaks for bio reasons? Gonna need a new pool after he craps and pisses all up in it.

The longest I ever played a game, well swapping every hour was about 11-12 hours total, Final Fantasy VII. I had the PC version and I supposedly beat it in less than 10 hours, but I think there was a windows time glitch, since me and my buddy maybe got about half-way through the game in that time (On the PS one)

That is some record. I pulled 37 hours on CS 1.6 a long time ago.... Summer vacation and I was 15, good times.

Holy shit. Thats a LONG time , I can only play 2-4 hours a day before I can't handle the same game any more. I usually get up and eat after 3 hours. Then do something else for a while. and if I finally feel like it , play games again. Maybe.

I played "regular" 12 hours matches of Starcraft (custom maps) with a group of friends of mine back in the day...

We played 3 days straight, no sleep, downed 2 cans of coffee and almost went to the hospital after our parents found out, rofl. Just keep the food coming and tell your folks you were having time for sleeping, hahaha.

Ah, the good ol' days...

I'd say the feat here was GTA IV being played more than 15 minutes straight. THAT's a feat of strenght.

Cheers!

I gamed for 73 hours to finish Frozen Throne addon when it poped out. I drank about 8x2L Fanta Orange bottles and smoked 10 packs of Kent Blue(8),6 Bags of Chips, went tot he toiled around 4 times.

Ahhh the good'ol'days. Now i barley get 1-2h of gaming.I even quit smoking. But now i got a crapload of stuff bought and i dont really have time to use it, the irony of it all.

Personal best is about 36 hours of Final Fantasy XI.

Does it count if you get up to use the restroom, or get a snack, or meal?

I was 25 at the time, and single. I wish I could go back for just one more marathon session like that. Good Times.

Why do I have the feeling that in the next few days there's going to be a case or two of someone having a heart attack after a long gaming session...?

I've beat that before. In high school, I played GT2 for 4 days straight. That completed almost all of the game except two endurance races, which would have tacked on another 6-12 hours.

Bullshit that's the longest ever, what about that guy (Korean if I remember correctly) who died playing WoW for like 3-4 days solid?

I can tell from the comments here and my own experience, that MANY people have technically "beaten" this record. However, the details are still a bit vague. Bio-breaks ect... Can anyone link to the Guinness article? Bragging rights are only good if you have truth to back them up! :D

Is that completely non stop? Such as, not even stopping for an hour to eat?
There was a south korean dude who went from lvl 1-60 in one session in WoW (about 5 days if I remember).
