10. Conclusions

Editor's Note: These are tentative conclusions. I will finalize my conclusions in Part II to be published on Thursday April 27th.

Dell's XPS M1710 is quite a computer. Its cool design points include a metallic red or black top, a lighted mouse touchpad and changeable lights at various places around the notebook. But, the XPS M1710 is not just another cool notebook. It can also be a super performer with an up to 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX or GS graphics processor and up to 4 GB of up to 667 MHz memory.

At this writing, you can buy an XPS M1710 configured like my evaluation unit for around $4,300. The starting price for metallic red models is $3,400. The starting price for metallic black systems is in the neighborhood of $2,600. The metallic red models have a higher minimum configuration than the metallic black ones. Right now, all this nice stuff is available only in the USA and Canada. At the time of this writing, the Dell website showed an estimated ship date of 5/11/2006 for all XPS M1710 notebooks.
