6. The Good And The Bad: The 15" SXGA+ TFT Display

With a maximum of less than 150 cd/m², the display is certainly not the brightest. In addition, the black-and-white contrast with maximum brightness was below 100:1, due to the fact that the black level was 1.63 cd/m². Although we suspect a defective display in our test system, we recommend potential customers to take a close look at the display.

The control of the brightness of the TFT monitor allows great fine-tuning. The SXGA+ resolution of the 15.1" display does its duty when it comes to working with spreadsheets while the DVD player is running at the same time. But with a native resolution of 1400x1050 pixels and the ghosting effects that occurred due to the average response time of the liquid crystals, the display is not that suitable for 3D games. As far as our experience goes, though, all TFT displays that are momentarily on the market "suffer" from ghosting effects while displaying fast game scenes.

Of course, in this review we also want to find out how great the performance difference is between this notebook and a comparably equipped desktop system. As a basis for this test, we use a desktop that is equipped with different graphic cards.

Furthermore, we take the readings of a few notebooks we have reviewed in the past into account. You will find the equipment that THG used in the section above titled:" The Test System In Numbers..."
