BioShock Infinite Announced: A BioShock Prequel
Back to a century ago.
The BioShock franchise continues, as 2K Games announced today that BioShock Infinite, a first-person shooter, is currently in development at Irrational Games, the studio behind the original BioShock.
This one won't be a sequel, however, as BioShock Infinite will be set in 1912, and introduce an entirely new narrative experience that "lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky."
BioShockInfinite is currently planned for release during calendar 2012 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The plot:
Originally conceived as a floating symbol of American ideals at a time when the United States was emerging as a world power, Columbia is dispatched to distant shores with great fanfare by a captivated public. What begins as a brand new endeavor of hope turns drastically wrong as the city soon disappears into the clouds to whereabouts unknown.
The player assumes the role of former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, sent to the lost city to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned there since childhood. He develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.
Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games said, “In order to explore the floating city of Columbia, we needed an entirely new engine. To bring Elizabeth to life, we had to build brand-new animation and AI systems. To create wide-ranging indoor and outdoor firefights at 30,000 feet, we had to rethink, rebuild and expand the BioShock arsenal. The only thing gamers can be certain of is this: the rules of the BioShock universe are about to change.”
“But when it came to begin work on BioShock Infinite,” Levine said, “we only had one rule: No sacred cows. This game is both true to what people love about the series and unafraid to question every assumption.”

Sweet.. cant wait to get more secure rom installed on my machine.. yaaaaaaaaaa
Why can't something like this be ported to linux ?
Why can't something like this be ported to linux ?
Because linux isn't worth the directx > opengl conversion time.
hmm, another fountainhead/atlas shrugged inspired world that doesnt work out.
least they are consistent.
Great another title that will be ruined due to secure rom. x.x
A good one at that.
This caught me completely offguard. I cant wait to see more little tidbits in the upcoming months.
Looks pretty cool, possibly a 'little' too similar to the original Bioshock but hey ho, will have to wait and see.
new engine??? perhaps dx 11 hopefully
Because linux isn't worth the directx > opengl conversion time.
Which explains why it isn't on the PS3...oh wait
Not sure how I feel about this one. Guess we'll see.
OMG... SO AMAZING...
i have so much respect for Andrew Ryan, now i get to see how he built his empire.
I wasn't thrilled at all when I first watched the trailer... But after reading more and watching the trailer a couple more times along with some interviews i'm pretty pumped. Bioshock 1 is currently my favorite game of all time, and while I didn't want to see anything based around Bioshock at all, we'll see how this turns out...
Why can't something like this be ported to linux ?
Until they do start porting these things, theres always WINE, or as a last resort, you can always dual-boot. Probably not what you want to hear, but at least its an option if you really want to play the game badly enough.
I hope it comes out before december that year or the world will end before I get to play it =O
Thank God for a new engine! Bioshock 2 looked so stale.
Thank God for a new engine! Bioshock 2 looked so stale.
You're joking right? It used the Unreal 3 engine. That's as cutting edge as you're gonna get on the 360/PS3.
Bioshock still to me seems like a cheep rip of the Systemshock games.
Why can't something like this be ported to linux ?
Not worth it, now just install windows.
I'm really skeptical about a floating city. but whatever I'm over it. I just hope this doesn't become an American flag waving game like so many others are these days. (Modern Warfare 2, I'm looking at you)
God I get a kick out out of uninformed people making bold statements... MUAAAH - Love ya!
Well, another flying shooting game was a failure (Dark Void). I hope it is not so with this one.
actually, i think the first 2 bioshock games used a heavily modded UE 2.5
Could we PLEASE, for the love of Dog, see some gameplay video? I'm getting pretty sick of getting nothing but cinematic previews for upcoming games. And you guys wonder why studios now feel the need to charge us $60 a pop?

Actually, both Bioshock and Bioshock 2 use the Unreal Engine 2.5. I personally thought they did look a little "stale".
I think the concept is a little far-fetched in my opinion. The game is set in 1912, it just seems a little odd that technology would have been available to allow buildings to fly for whatever reason any utopian thinker may dream of. Although, I am sure they will make a fantastic attempt to explain it. I just think that I won't be able to suspend my disbelief enough.
Secondly, the character ART style looks like it came from the Shrek movies or something.
Third, if its a rethink of everything why is there a being that is analogous to the big daddy of previous iterations of the series?
Bioshock Infinite...dumb name.
I find it funny all the people complaining about the new Bioshock Game. If you love FPS's and have played at least one of the 1st 2 Bioshock games, then this should be exciting news. The story, moral questions, game play, atmosphere, left hand plasmids, right hand weapon...The Bioshock games are some of my favorite. This is on my list already and doesn’t even come out until 2012.
Here is an Interview with the creative director of Bioshock: Infinite that just wets my appetite even more.
