Bill Gates Gives Money to Malaria-fighting Candy
Mmm... disease fighting candy.
Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and big philanthropist, has lent his resources in the battle against malaria.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave grants of $100,000 to scientists who have new ideas on how to detect and fight malaria.
According to the Telegraph, one of the fresh ideas is to use chewing gum to detect for malaria indicators in saliva. While such a method would be painless, wouldn't require needles or analytical equipment, one drawback is that malaria indicators are not as prevalent in saliva as they are in the blood. Nevertheless, this method would provide a new, easier way to administer tests, particularly to children.
Another portion of the grant is being put towards the study of the effect that chocolate has on the malaria parasite. Since the malaria parasite feeds on fat in the blood, chocolate's effect on the body is interesting as it binds with cholesterol and takes it out of circulation.
Researchers hope that a liquid chocolate-type medicine will be able to kill most of the parasite but still leave enough for children to develop a lifetime resistance.
The grants from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are a part of its Grand Challenges Exploration program, which looks for unconventional, possible solutions to today's problems.

Well done Gates, your foundation also hooked up my broke friend with a full 4 year ride in university.
wow. that is quite odd. I do not have malaria, bit I am a skinny guy who hoards fatty meats like a cannibal, and eats chocolate randomly all day...I know it is fixing something... The point? what one may call malaria, could be just another form of it. Science is always good, especially with a sure donation.
As someone who was born in Nigeria where malaria is still prevalent due to the banning of DDT (insert your own opinions here, I know I have mine...), this sounds absolutely great to me.
Psh, and who says money makes you evil?
+1 for Bill Gates!
Great now the food Industry has a new market to tap. Fight malaria and get fat at the same time. Because Americans aren't obese enough for the rest of the world we need to get kids addicted to sweets while telling them it's good for themselves

Wow, just wow... This is to be used in places like Africa and South America where medicine and the doctors to administer them are scarce. With the gum, some joe blow with 5 min of training will be able to administer a test and treat a devastating virus for children and adults.
Sounds like something from Willy Wonka.
Gotta love the Gates Foundation; they give away more money in a year then most countries GDP. Gates specificly left MS because he wanted to focus on the foundation. Many believe that if he continues on this path, in the future he will be more known for his philanthropy then for founding MS.
In the future people may actually say, " Ohh that guy founded Microsoft".
Wow, they get to eat sweets and get better? That's like any kids dream.
+1 to Marcus Yam for writing this article. We know you didn't want to, but you sucked it up and did a good one.
Bill Gates has to live with the fact that he agreed to let the NSA collaborate with him to make Windows into the ultimate "Big Brother-ware", in exchange for being allowed to continue the monopoly and avoid any real consequences from that congressional antitrust inquiry. Having to forever live with the guilt of selling out humanity, he now tries to repent by helping those who are worst off.
oh come on jesus_uses_linux you know if bill gates ran for president you would vote for him i know i would.
Neat. =3

Ur just jealous of Bill.
Bill has done more in sharing his wealth than probably most big companies' founders will ever do, combined.
See, this is brilliant for Microsoft as well, because people automatically associate Bill Gates with Microsoft, and will see this as Microsoft doing something good.
This is the kind of advertising I really like though, because this actually benefits someone who actually needs it.
(Cue someone whining about how Microsoft are just doing this to exploit Africans in the future...)
It's really fun to see people think that Bill Gates is generous.
How can a person who has more than 50 billion can be generous?
In addition it does absolutely nothing.
It pays no taxes and lots of money hidden in tax havens.
Bill Gates is one of the most miserly on this planet.

/facepalm
-Bill Gates is/was in the Guiness book of Records for the largest single donation to charity ($6billion. Not million, billion).
-Why would you want donations to go to taxes? That's the best way to dissuade people from donating money.
-...You know what, I've spent too much energy on this post already.
put the cure in the water, Bill. put it in the water. kids in malaria ridden countries also need clean water. you'd be killing two birds with one stone. (where do i pick up my hundred grand, btw?)
I appreciate the efforts, we all really I do. But isn't giving one of those kids chocolate a bit like giving them a pony? Why do you want rice and water when you can have a pony! Its a pony!!
Oh and Tandersky you will receive your hundred grand in the form of 557 copies of Vista SP1. As soon as you pay the $17,030 in shipping and handling fees. Will that be Visa or Mastercard?
Apply for a grant to figure how to stop backpain from lifting 557 copies of Vista.
thats sweet XD. now they just gotta include a tooth problem or tooth decay will be on the rise in those plague infested lands.
He's only saving the kids so they can grow up to starve to death
Why do Bill, Oprah, and that other billionaire (brain freeze) care more about African kids than Americans?
Responsibility is the ability to respond. I'm glad there are people like Bill who offer their resources to help others.

Hmmm last I checked Bill Gates and Oprah are Americans so your point is well just non-existent. In case you didn't notice a lot of people have their own life to worry about in these times. Get out of that rock you live under.

Paranoid much? And it's not microsoft fault Apple can't get more market share. So how much did that Tin foil hat reinforced with anti-mind reading/controlling alloys cost you? Damn nutter.
Why is it that when people do something nice for the world that instead of simply offering the man the praise he deserves people have to talk smack about him? I guarantee Bill has done more for this world than all of us combined will ever do a million times over. Say what you will about Microsoft the company, but the man did nothing to deserve these negative comments. For those of you who feel the need to put him down, what the heck have YOU done for the world that makes you so high and mighty? The man is making the world a better place with his generosity. If you have nothing nice to say about that, I pity you.

Amen Brother!! I have always been a huge fan of Bill Gates
I love bill Gates, he is one of the greatest people to ever grace this earth.
You should look up what all that Bill Gates has done via his charitable contributions before you speak ill of him. He has done lots for American kids, schools, libraries, etc. Being rich doesn't make you evil, so stop believing all these media outlets who want you to believe that. Rich people make the jobs that allow you to eat, drink, sleep under a roof, and even access this blasted thing called the Internet. So quit the rich-bashing and form your own opinions instead of being coaxed by the media into believing all rich people are "evil".
bill gates is just one of the people who successfully one way or another made the billions period. He has the right to use his money on whatever or whenever he wants. Untill you make the money like he can, you can do whatever you want whenever you want with it. Other than that you don't have any room to talk.
