A Connecticut man consults Apple Genius over an image problem and ends up in jail. Genius.

If there's one thing we've learned over the past few months, it's this: (1) PC repair shops have access to your private information and can steal every dime you own and (2) never leave incriminating evidence on the drive if you actually do decide to have it repaired. Unfortunately, Raymond Miller of Fairfield, Connecticut wasn't aware of rule #2, and was promptly arrested after taking his Apple G5 desktop to the local Genius Bar.

The Advocate reports that 36-year-old Miller brought his Mac to the Stamford Town Center Apple store because the computer was writing thumbnails over thumbnails of other images, thus not matching up correctly (meaning the thumbnail pulled up the wrong image). The technician told Miller that the Mac had to stay overnight, however Miller refused, claiming that he needed to pay bills with the computer.

The technician then began to look through the computer, searching for the problem. After a thorough search, he discovered additional, unexpected images: pictures of naked 10- to 13-year-old girls in "suggestive and explicit poses." Whoops.

The technician thus covertly sought out a police officer stationed at the mall while Miller waited patiently for his computer. Miller was immediately arrested, charged with one count of possession of child pornography (a class-B felony), and could serve a minimum of five years in prison if convicted.

Miller's bond was set to $75,000 Monday night.

Now this guy will serve time in jail and more than likely get raped. Man, and I thought Apple only raped you with their prices.

I'm surprised he had enough time aside from gloating about how he owned a mac to watch child pornography. Whateva, send him to jail.

Good on him. Reminds me of the time we dobbed in a bloke at a lan party who had child porn. Nothing like watching scumbags have their stuff confiscated and get muscled into a paddy wagon.

5 year minimum... ouch. Can you say zero tolerance or what?!

In all seriousness I would prefer the death penalty for this. Any crime involving children like child pornography, rape, or murder should merit the death penalty.

Yes but get caught smoking pot or a few grams of other drugs and your ass is in the slammer for 10+ years. Isn't our justice system great =) You rape/molest kids you get 5 years.. You do something to your own body and you get 10+.. You pirate and you get more ^_^ but if you kill you get less..

i so strongly agree, as a parent of an 8 yr old child and a computer tech....i cant begin to tell you what i have done to people we have found that kind of material on their systems.... for most we have just called police.... for those with really bad evidence showing them personally doing acts.... its been much worse what we have done since we knew where they lived.... but again i cant go into detail

Man, I can't believe he downloaded pictures of unclothed girls of young age who might have been abused. It is just so awful that he did this. That is quite possible the most terrible thing anyone could ever do. I hope he is anal raped in jail many times, but at the same time I am sad because rapid anal rape and prison for 5 years will never be enough punishment for downloading nude pictures of girls who might have been abused by a third unrelated party. I am extremely excited that he will have restrictions on where he will live.

I am even more excited that he will be on a list of people who molest and rape children because he downloaded some pictures. This is quite possibly the most justice I have ever seen in a single day.

They shouldn't publish stories like this that way other stupid pedophiles don't learn what not to do.

If you work in a computer shop, look around, there SHOULD be an easily readable memo noting that if any child porn is found that the shop is required by law to notify authorities. if one is NOT posted in your shop, i would get on telling management to post it. If not you could be held liable. Howe\/er you cannot go searching through all hdd info, only if you 'stumble' upon it. There is a gray area here, and you ha\/e to be careful as a computer tech what you touch and what you don't touch.

Amazing. An article involving a mac, and thus far, there's been no angry flame war. We are all in agreement. iPorn is good. iPorn Nano is bad.

The guy might be an innocent victim in this. There are plenty of ways to get child porn on your computer without your consent. I think the verdict will spell this case.

Nonsense. No less than Apple itself extols the security of the Mac.

"pictures of naked 10- to 13-year-old girls in 'suggestive and explicit poses.'"

Is it only I that thinks this has gone way too far?

I mean, I could see something far more hardcore than that by going to the local beach in the summertime.

In fact, I'm pretty sure taking, non-nude, pictures of my friends, younger, kids and keeping them around on my computer would earn me even more jail-time then.

What I'd really like to know though is what kind of jail-time the tech is getting for violating his customers privacy, probably breaking all kinds of rules or even laws in the process, and in effect destroying his life.

The last thing we need after ridiculous laws is public support for vigilantes trying to uphold them.

Well... Actually abusing the girls would have been somewhat worse imo.
