Verizon: iPad is a Big Opportunity for Us
Verizon says that the iPad is a big opportunity for the company.
Even though Verizon Wireless didn't get first dibbs on Apple's upcoming iPad tablet, that's not stopping the Big Red from milking the iPad launch and scoring a few data contacts next month.
Engadget has supplied a screenshot of what looks to be a corporate PDF stored on the Verizon Wireless website. The memo suggests that Apple's iPad is an "opportunity" for the company, and in some ways, is suggesting that Verizon employees promote the Wi-Fi only model.
Why? So that Verizon Wireless can sell it's MiFi device.
For $60 per month, this $100 pocket-sized 3G router can connect up to five devices to the Internet. The catch is that subscribers only get 5GB of downloadable data per month. The device comes with a two-year contract, but offers a $50 online discount for new accounts.
Although iPad consumers will initially save money by purchasing the Wi-Fi version over the pricier 3G model, in the long run, it will cost double to use Verizon rather than AT&T's non-contracted, dedicated, unlimited iPad plan.
"Why pay more for the 3G version and get 3G service on an overloaded network with limited coverage," Verizon asks in the memo.
Sorry Big Red, but it sounds like the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G model and AT&T's service will be the cheaper, sure bet.

i think Verizon is on drugz for even supporting this piece of junk
but then again, there are fashion fanboys out there... oh wait, i dont think a giant iTouch is a particularly fashionable item... it is sort of like late 80s gigantic brick cellphones...
Verizon is just kicking themselves in the ass for not originally taking apple up on their offer with the iphone, they seem a little more willing with the ipad.
no one needs an ipad, a net book is much better
no one needs an ipad, a net book is much better
My thinking exactly..
So I can pay $100 up front, get locked into a two year contract, and pay $60 a month to get 5GB of downloading or I can pay $130 up front, $30 a month without a contract, and get unlimited downloading?
So... over the course of two years...
Verizon: $60 x 24 months = $1440 + $100 = $1550
AT&T" $30 x 24 months = $720 + 130 = $850
I'm wholeheartedly against both considering I have AT&T U-verse internet and television and an iPhone. I have no desire to pay for internet three different times. But if I was for some reason interested in this device I would laugh in the face of a Verizon employee telling me how good of a deal I was getting.
I'm getting an iPad for me and a friend of mine. Mainly I'm getting it for him because he can't use his fingers anymore after a tragic accident. The iPad will actually be perfect and I can't wait.
I'll take an Ipad over a netbook anyday of the Week.
Verizon: $60 x 24 months = $1440 + $100 = $1550
AT&T" $30 x 24 months = $720 + 130 = $850
Where do you come up with this crap, your numbers aren't even close Dude!

Do you not know how to do basic math or do you just not understand how a contract works? Or did you not even read the article? Plain and simple his math does add up, if you know how to add!
Don't like AT&T? Get the MiFi on Verizon. Spend less on the iPad as well.

lol? Please, calculate it for us then
An alternative is to add mifi tethering to your Palm Pre. $40 per month on top of the bill you're already paying with up to 5 devices, a tethering device that actually fits in your pocket and you get to stay with the nations largest 3G network.
I think I'll stick with my Asus 1201n Netbook. It seems to accomplish everything I could possibly need at this point in my life.
Giving me the options to use: SD reader, physical keyboard, usb ports, hdmi out, svga out, web cam+mic for video calls, blue tooth tethering to phone, and external DVD burning if needed.
I'm still getting one
Are you still mad?
And to the stickler who will point out that I keep repeating myself- take a look at the other comments... most of them are repeats too. MORON!
you forgot the tax!!! that's why it doesn't add up!!!
AT&T's "unlimited" plan is 5gb per month. Good thing only an idiot would buy the ipad so there won't be even more congestion on At&t's network. Apple TV = Apple iPad = Apple iFlop
no one needs an ipad, a net book is much better
Have you tried one out? I doubt it. Go to Best Buy and play around with once, you will be wanting more.
