USB-Based Mass Storage Coming to Xbox 360

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

A Spring update supposedly adds 32GB of extra storage via two 16GB USB devices.

Joystiq claims that the Xbox 360 will receive an update this Spring 2010 that will support USB-based mass storage devices. This is big news for gamers wanting to expand the current hard drive's capacity.

Although Joystiq doesn't quote sources, the site says that the information came from documentation authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft , and was verified by two separate sources. The site even provides screenshots.

In addition to providing extra storage, the update will enable owners the ability to save and load game data right off the USB device. Gamers will also have means to install games onto the USB device-- full disc-based titles, according to the source.

That said, the USB device will need to be at least 1GB in size, however the Xbox 360 OS will do a compatibility check before allowing access to the storage. Apparently the maximum is 16GB per USB storage device, providing a maximum of 32GB thanks to a two-device limit.

Joystiq said that once users plug in a storage device, the Xbox 360 will prompt them with two options: Configure Now or Customize. The "Configure Now" option allows the user to set the storage space of 512MB (for the system) plus up to 16GB--even if the device can handle 64GB of data, the Xbox 360 only allows for 16GB on that particular stick.

As for the "Customize" option, users will be able to preserve some pre-existing, non-console data on the device, such as movies and music.

Keep your eyes peeled for an official announcement sometime within the next month.

Me thinks that this is probably made to support the WP7's sd card.

So were the proprietary hard drives a waste of money?

hmmm... for a console which has put that much of hope on online streaming... this update seems long over due.

However... no matter how late it is...it is still better now than later.

great update MS

It sounds to me like the slimmer 360 won't support their hard drives, and will use USB storage instead.

When i bought my xbox ages ago and seen the usb drives i expected them to be compatible with a simple plug n play hard drive. How wrong i was, and yet, with this update the compatiblity still isn't there. You'd expect that to be fairly simple thing to add, drivers that is...

Please rename this article title from "USB-Based Mass Storage..." to "USB-Based Mini Storage..."

With the 16GB limitation it doesn't seem like much of an improvement.

This is a joke, right M$? I know making money is important indeed, but this is plain stupid and bastardly-greedy.

Cheers!

This is cool. You can actually saved data to your friends and play without your XBOX360.

Oh, wait... I do have a question. Why doesn't Microsoft start caring about their customers and just allow normal jump drive to be used?

Bullshit, 16GB only? I'm so happy to be a PC gamer.

It's only 16GB so Microsoft can protect sales of the high-profit hard drives.

So you can only now do with a 360 what a PS3 has been able to since launch?

Drip50291 :
Limitations are freaking lame and retarded: only two usb ports on the front= wtf am i gonna plug my controller into. Y the f*** cant this windows based device use as much flash as possible like a regular damn PC. Its a f***ing money scam i guarantee it lol

You could also use the USB port on the back of the console?

I think everyone overlooked something here. The article says usb "DEVICE". Not usb DRIVE specifically. This is more likely to be a usb thumb drive (memory stick) not a hard drive. They don't even make hard drives that small anymore (16gb).

Well it's a start, but come back and tell us when a standard external hard drive will work for this purpose. Nonetheless, my 20GB drive is rather full and I'll take all the help it can get without paying for an over-priced "official" Xbox drive.

ZZZzzz, you can plud any external USB HD into a PS3 from the beginning. MS fanboys are like Democrats. They keep getting fed crap and keep taking it saying, "Thank you may I have another".

If you're talking about video and proper media archiving neither the Xbox OR the PS3 have anything like sufficient capacity - the xbox's 20/60/120/250 gb is woeful, and even the PS3 can only be upgraded to something like 750Gb - largest 2.5" drive available.

For media - in my opinion, the only sensible, future-proof and truly flexible way of doing things is with upgradeable centralised storage, after that, the 360 and Xbox are pretty much equivalent.

Finally! One $40 16GB USB Flash dongle, which you can find at any store is a better deal than one 512KB Xbox 360 Memory Unit which costs $50 and which you can't buy at any local store. Duh! It just makes sense besides the 16GB limit.

Wait I'm confused can't you already plug in a normal thumbdrive and HDD as long as it's fat 32 formated?

I have been running my 8gb thumb drives and a 160gb WD passport for movies on my xbox360 since the day I got it 2 years ago.
Use mac format HFS+ and your fine.
Just download Macdrive for PC.
It has always worked because MS wanted to support Ipods.

Yes, but it is recognized as just media storage. You cannot load your games from the disc onto it or use it for game saves and so on.
