Yesterday Sony announced that it plans to bring the mega-hit PlayStation 3 game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves to the silver screen next week. However, Sony isn't talking about a live-action movie with Hollywood actors, but the actual console game playable on the theaters' giant screens. The catch is that gamers can get a taste of this super-huge version in certain theaters equipped with Sony's digital-projection technology.

"This is the first time we're doing it in a theater," said Mike Fidler, senior vice president of Sony Electronics' Digital Cinema Solutions and Services Group. "We think it's a start of something for us, and hope we can build this into a standard element in the movie-going experience. Our goal in converting theaters to digital is to go beyond the traditional movie-going experience and focus on helping exhibitors find ways to fill seats."

According to Fidler, only four theaters will offer the PlayStation game on October 5 (private) and 6 (public): San Francisco and Thousand Oaks, California, Rosemont, Illinois and Bellevue, Washington. These theaters will connect PlayStation 3 consoles to Sony's 4K digital cinema technology, although there are an estimated 500 theaters nationwide that utilize Sony's digital system.

Sony is hoping that events such as the Uncharted 2 interactive sneak peak will drive home additional revenue to Sony, game publishers, and theater owners. While that may be true, how much would theaters charge patrons to play games on the big screen? Would multiplex cinemas be willing to set aside a few theaters just for gaming or other interactive events? It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Hell yea.. That would be sweet especially if it was priced decently. The only thing is each theater has only one screen so only one player can use it. Unless its a multiplayer split screen but I hate that you can see where the other characters are. It all depends on the game you play. I am of course speaking in terms that they actually go through with this long term and incorporate many more titles into this scheme.

And so, if its a single player title only, then a single theater will be hogged by a single player. So I am sure they will charge by the hour or half hour. Perhaps by minute. If your kickin some ass, it may just empty your pocket.

Plus what if there are dozens of people wanting to get some play time, then what? Theaters will have to come up with a plan on that one. Kudos to Sony for the intrepid idea tho.

I am basing this post that this goes live for public consumption, not based on the few theaters they are presenting the preview.

Well most theaters have 15+ minutes of commercials before the movie starts so this would be alot more fun however existing theatre owners could see their revenue go down for commercials.

I bet this would be expensive for 1/2 hour play but really cool. I would like to see those LCD but use LED now, glasses with screens in the glasses. You could think you were at the theater as far as size goes.

So that's great for the person playing, but what about the other 200 people that are in there??? The Cinema's would make more money with 30 people watching a movie over a few playing a game!

Only problem being there is no 5870x2, so you'll have to put up with 4 x 5870 crossfire!

My local theatre rents out empty rooms for those who want to game on the big screen... not cheap.
Nothing new however.
