Microsoft Offering Public Preview of New Xbox Dashboard

- By - Source : Major Nelson

Microsoft is now calling on Xbox 360 owners to test the upcoming Silverlight-based dashboard.

Major Nelson reports that Xbox 360 owners can now sign up to test drive the new Xbox LIVE dashboard rumored to invade the console on Black Friday, November 25. The new dashboard will be based around an enhanced version of Silverlight, and allow users to install apps and natively navigate the new interface using Kinect.

"Now that our work on the dashboard is almost complete, we are announcing an open call for all Xbox LIVE members to register to participate in a preview program to help us test the system," he said. "This is an important program as we continually strive to ensure the reliability of a service that reaches tens of millions globally. We could not do so without the ongoing help of our great community."

Once the preview program begins, Microsoft will push an update to the chosen user's console. The new dashboard won't be fully intact, but it will offer four basic features including a new design for integrated Kinect and controller navigation, new Beacons to play online with friends, deeper Facebook integration and new Cloud Storage for Game Saves and Xbox LIVE Profile.

Other features and entertainment partner apps may come into view during the program period, he said.

"For those familiar with previous registrations for our program, we have a new model for registering your consoles this year," he added. "The new model is a more automated process that should make it easier for you.  We will not ask you to type in your console information upon initial registration; once you are approved to participate in the program, look for details on our portal about how to register your console."

To get started, head here to register for the Public Preview. Additional information will be provided via the www.connect.microsoft.com/xboxliveupdate program portal.

Please keep in mind that participants cannot blog about the preview materials, they cannot post pictures, screenshots or video clips, and they cannot discuss the preview materials in discussion forums, emails or podcasts. Participants also cannot talk to members of the media or press (cough) including bloggers, newspaper reporters, and television reporters. Users could face criminal prosecution if they break the confidentiality obligation.

"The program will officially start within the next two weeks, at which time all registrants will receive an e-mail update informing you of your program status," Microsoft says once users are registered. "Until then, please be patient and check back on this site for general program related updates."

If I recall correctly the last one you we're unable to communicate with people on the old dashboard. Is it the same way with this new update? Will I be able to talk to people on my friends list who don't have the update?

How about your read the article, you could learn something.

Current dashboard sucks. I miss the old one. I like more than 40% of my background theme being shown in the dashboard, after I have spent Microsoft points buying them.

Nope, MS have decided to create an artificial rift right down the middle of their customer base where the people who upgrade can play games with each other, chat, it will make you taller, richer and more attractive to women.

Whilst the people who don't upgrade will have all their games deleted, not be able to talk to anyone, a funny smell will start to come from the console, you will get warts and it will turn you gay.

MS Tool, MS and others are slowly getting a stranglehold on the tools who embrace the cloud.

Steam has been doing this for ages

Except that Steam only suggests and makes it available, Microsoft will probably start either enabling it themselves on games, or at the very least requiring it for new games.

I have some 200 games on Steam, and I reckon not even 20% of those use Steam Cloud, so it's not really worth bragging about.
