Radisson Hotels and Resorts has revealed that computer systems in some of the corporation's U.S. and Canadian branches were hacked between November 2008 and May of this year.

The hotel chain yesterday announced in an open letter that several Radisson Hotel computer systems had been accessed without authorization. Information on the systems in question included the guests' credit or debit card details, such as the name on the card, the number itself, and the expiration date.

Radisson values your business and respects the privacy of your information, which is why we wish to inform you that between November 2008 and May 2009, the computer systems of some Radisson® hotels in the U.S. and Canada were accessed without authorization. This unauthorized access was in violation of both civil and criminal laws. Radisson has been coordinating with federal law enforcement to assist in the investigation of this incident. While the number of potentially affected hotels involved in this incident is limited, the data accessed may have included guest information such as the name printed on a guest’s credit card or debit card, a credit or debit card number, and/or a card expiration date.

Unable to confirm which locations were affected, Radisson has instead asked all guests to review their account statements and credit reports, and report any inaccuracies or suspicious activity to their bank and the police, local AG's office or the FTC.

In a list of FAQ, Radisson said it became aware of breaches "through information provided by payment card companies (Visa, MasterCard, etc), and its payment card processors."

Doh.

I wonder if someone hacked in while staying there or if perhaps one of the workers was bored surfing the internet and picked up a nasty piece of software that took care of the rest. Neither scenario is good of course.

dingumf, if you can't say anything nice, don't say it at all. If you say something not nice, explain/give advice. Ie: "You're retarded. (explanation why you are retarded here)"

Radisson Hotel is the only 5-star hotel that allows untrained staff runs their management.

They have a funny system that allows non English-reading people work in the front desk.

For instance, the Shanghai Radisson frontdesk pissed my dad off when she said my dad had not made reservation.

Granted my dad is arrogant and over confident, but this time unfortunately the frontdesk really was looking forward to piss us off. She apparently failed to read & retype my dad's name (in ABCD, not in chinese characters) from his passport into their system, so it appears my dad does not have reservation.

They got everything wrong down to the: smoking / non-smoking, single bed / double bed size, and even how many days we are staying. Believe it or not they actually told us they are overbooked and expect us just to give up fighting it off because we're exhausted by cross-continent flight. The problem is: it was not a holiday season and there was no major expo what so ever.

I ended up went down to the lobby myself and yell at anyone in the frontdesk and (still can't believe I'd said) how many stars does this hotel have three, four, five? I've been in all three and this is the first time stupid things like this happens in a five star hotel. Is your manager here? You are the manager????

They had to keep my voice down and since I was also staying there, they can not call the security as well. So, they gave us what we want, plus a basket of fruit.

Never understood why, my dad was so happy getting that basket of fruit. They only cost less than 10 bucks.

They can get the above so wrong, don't be surprised it took them until 2009 to realize that they get hacked.

Hey, my dad is arrogant and over confident too but that doesn't mean if he books a hotel, makes the appropriate booking (and, I assume, receives a confirmation) he is wrong to kick up a fuss when they tell him he has to find somewhere else to stay last minute. Sure, he might have gotten what he wanted a lot faster by being nice, but man, I bet the yelling felt good. :P

I don't think this "open letter" is gonna cut it. Hey, if you stayed in one of our hotels in this 7 month period, your information might have been disclosed to unknown persons. The number of hotels affected is limited, but we're not going to tell you which ones, or if your information was potentially leaked. Therefore, we're just going to ask all of the guests who stayed in any one of our properties worldwide to monitor their credit card statements and let us know if they notice "any suspected unauthorized card activity". And if you visit our web site, we'll tell you how to get 12 months of free monitoring of your credit reports.

What about the mandatory disclosure laws in some states? I'm quite certain that Radisson has hotels in those states and it's highly likely that some of the residents of states with mandatory disclosure laws stayed in an affected hotel during that timeframe.

Radisson, Please join the 21st century.

BTW, I'm glad that the only time I've stayed in a Radisson in the past 12 months, that the trip wasn't booked until June 2009, and it was booked through Expedia (or other travel service). Of course, Radisson did get my credit card upon check-in, but I don't remember if they swiped it or simply did a paper imprint, and it was in June, which is supposedly after the timeframe when the leakage occurred.

I stayed at Radisson in Escondido/San Diego in So Cal in March of this year. I just got a letter YESTERDAY informing me of the security breech so that's one Radisson that was affected. Why the hell it took so long to notify me I'm just beginning to wonder about. My letter was "dated" September 2009.
