PSP2 Will Have Bigger HD Screen, More
The PSP2 will supposedly feature a big HD screen and a rear-facing touch pad.
During the Tokyo Game Show, Sony reportedly revealed the upcoming PSP2 device in a private meeting at its offices in Tokyo. Unnamed sources who attended the meeting claim that the device will include many of the rumored features such as the touch panel on the back and dual analog sticks.
The PSP2's screen will reportedly be sharper, support HD, and measure around an inch larger than the current PSP-3000. There's also indication that the unit itself will be larger to accommodate the bigger screen and to better position the platform to compete with Nintendo and Apple's iPad.
The Wall Street Journal reported a similar size increase back in July, saying that Sony was developing a portable device “that shares the characteristics of handheld game machines, e-book readers and netbook computers.” The current PSP model already covers the e-book aspect to some extent by offering owners digital comics from Marvel, DC, IDW Publishing and more.
As for the previously-rumored rear touch panel, Sony did not provide specific details regarding its function. It was described as a big mouse trackpad that game and app developers could use at their discretion. This may actually be ideal for first-person shooters, allowing the gamer to "mouselook" using an index finger.
As expected, the new handheld device isn't slated to hit the market until Fall 2011. This will give Sony a chance to resolve alleged overheating issues resulting from an improper balance between the battery, power and hardware temperatures. The hardware specs are also not finalized and will likely change before Sony goes public with an official announcement.
Late September Mortal Kombat developer Netherrealm Studios said that it already had a PSP2 prototype in-house, claiming that it “looks like it's a pretty powerful machine.” Other reports have indicated that the device will use a 4-core Cell CPU, front-facing and rear-facing cameras, and more.
Expect a full-blown PSP2 reveal by Sony during E3 2011.

Hopefully they have learned from the mistakes they made on the PSP1. From the sound of it, based on the rumors, they seem to have. Guess we'll have to wait and find out!
all i can say is...the customer wins every time!!
The mistakes of PSP1? I hope they learned from the mistakes of PSPGo. The modability of the PSP1 allowed you to make it more then just a game system which made it an excellent portable device. You could watch cable on the thing.
If Apple made an iPod Touch Gaming Edition, with like built in joysticks and tacht buttons and triggers, I'd hop all over that thing like a kangaroo on crack. But since they seem to enjoy their little touch screens, I've kind of ruled that out.
But if Sony could put the power of an iPod Touch + Buttons + Joysticks, you have the world's best mobile platform.
I'm interested in battery life though.

Custom firmware made the PSP 1000 special, and the complete lack of a UMD drive and smaller size is what I actually like about the PSPgo.
I want custom firmware on a PSPgo N2000.
More than anything, I WANT DUAL ANALOG STICKS! The Armored Core series on the PSP alone would be enough reason for me to buy another PSP.
They also better not skimp out on the RAM this time. 16MB, really? Soon enough we'll have phones with 1GB.
Am I the only one who hates the UMD drive and likes a small size?
I Like the PSP's UMD Drive, because I can buy a game from any country and just play it, instead of being trapped to the online store.
yeah, it's a really good idea to give nintendo the head start. there will be absolutely no repercussions, none what so ever.
sony needs to step their game up. they better start working on a revision as soon as they get this thing out tthe door
You know what will really help this succeed. Competitively priced games that you can download over WiFI at a whim. I've lost track of the number of the
hope it come with AMOLED touch screen ~ ^_^
I'm hoping that a Cell-type CPU isn't in the works for the PSP2... Since the thing wasn't designed to run at low clock speeds, nor at low power consumption.
Even assuming we cut the SPEs to 4, and migrate to a 32nm fabrication process, we're still looking at probably 20+ watts. Reducing the clock speed would obviously cut it further, but there's only so much you can cut it by before it becomes pointless. Contrast this to the sub-5 watt range ARM or mobile MIPS CPUs run at, and perhaps you can see the problem.
Personally, I'm hoping it uses a more conventional CPU, and then includes some GPGPU functionality on the GPU; that way it can use the GPU for handling HD video, so you won't have silicon going to waste (and still wasting even just a little battery power) while playing games; it's a broadly-known fact that most of the Cell sits idle on the PS3 while gaming. So having the same power draw that isn't being used on a mobile device makes no sense.
Touchpad on the back makes sense... if done right. Point with your finger without smudging the screen or getting in the way of your target with your big hair human hands.
We'll see soon enough... before Christmas?
I hope they ditch UMDs. Make all new games available as download, or on memory cards in store that you can then copy to internal memory. you could link them to your PSN account to avoid piracy, and this would also help cut down on trade-ins (since if you decide to copy to internal memory, the card is useless)
other than that, i just want the obvious. dual analogue, decent video hardware and a touch screen would be nice. And a genuine app marketplace like Apple or android. Minis were a start, but if they hope to compete with apple they need to be less restrictive.

I think my statement stands, seeing as the mistake known as the PSPgo is technically a PSP1. And I consider the lack of a second analog stick a rather serious mistake on their part as well. Lets just hope they get it all right this time around.
How did the PSP lose out to the DS?...........because of the touch screen input.
What did the DS not have enough of and still beat the PSP?.......processing power.
Clearly up to now Sony doesn't get it.
It's features not power that sells.
And here they are again touting about more power.
With the Nintendo 3DS featuring a 3D screen would you rather get more power and no 3D screen? I don't think so.
PS. I only speak for myself

I agree, I rather have something different for portable gaming than what's basically a console on the go when I can better enjoy the games on my couch with my huge ass HDTV.
...ok maybe my TV is not that huge, but it's bigger than whatever the PSP2's screen will be that's for sure. And that's not forget battery life. I wonder how long will it last.
So, what exactly does HD mean here? 5" 720p screen?
I think it would take some time to get used to touchpad on the back. Kinda like inverted controls took a little bit of learning. Not really a problem, I just can't really picture how it would feel right now.
I'll get one if it has a solid state memory..I'm sick of the battery-eating, noisy ****ing UMD.
Why do people like thumbs-downing comments because they reveal facts that someone doesn't like? As I said, a Cell would be a bad idea for a mobile device; it works well for the PS3 because it's sucking juice from a wall outlet. In a portable, that just means we'll be looking at a 90-minute battery life.
It's also kinda ironic, since I wasn't exactly bashing Sony, but rather, hoping that they'd make a choice that'd make the PSP2 GOOD, so that it might SUCCEED.
So, what exactly does HD mean here? 5" 720p screen?
I'm kinda dubious about it being "HD" unless it's particular large, or Sony goes through the extreme expense of taking a super-high-density LCD panel. The PSP and PSP Go had a resolution of 128 and 145 dpi, respectively. (for comparison, the DS/DSis ranged from 76-107 dpi, including the XL, and the 3DS is 133 dpi)
If they didn't go any higher, then the PSP2 would need a 10.1" (8.8"x5.0") display to do 1280x720, making it the size of a netbook. Granted, they could shell out for a more dense screen; the iPhone 4, I think, holds the current record at 330 dpi. With something like that, a 4.45" (3.9"x2.2") display would work. However, such high-density displays are INCREDIBLY expensive compared to lower-density ones of the same size; expect such a PSP2 to cost >$500US.
So chances are, at the very least, we'll see "HD" in the way the Xbox 360 typically does it: sub-720p. (most top-shelf games like Halo: Reach render at 576-640p, and stretch to 720p) If they combined a 576p resolution with a 180 dpi display, comparable to most less-expensive smartphones, then it'd need only a 6.5" (5.7"x3.2") display, and this would make a price closer to $300 plausible. And seriously, on such a tiny device, true HD is more or less wasted, and just a place to make on-paper number boasts.
At least no one used the word "innovation" here. I'm rather tired of people spouting it off as a buzz word to sound as if they have a level of sophistication more than the people who want good graphics AND good ideas in games. Is there any reason we can't just... have both?
Sounds very cool. Winder if it will be a slide-out machine like the PSP Go.
