Sony PS Vita Priced at $249 WiFi/$299 3G; Launching at the End of 2011
Sony last night revealed additional details on the PS Vita.
Sony announced the PSP2, codenamed NGP, way back in January. However, while the company was pretty forthcoming with specs, it wasn’t quite ready to divulge pricing and a release date. Last night at its pre-E3 press conference, Sony filled in some of the blanks and renamed the device the PlayStation Vita.
Set to launch at the end of this year, the WiFi-enabled PS Vita will cost 24,980 yen (including tax) in Japan while the WiFi/3G model will cost 29,980 yen. Sony also dished on American prices, revealing that U.S. customers will be paying $249 for the WiFi version and $299 for the 3G/WiFi model.
WiFi and 3G connectivity aside, the Vita boasts a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU; a 5-inch 960x544 multitouch OLED display; a rear touchpad with multitouch; both front-facing and rear-facing cameras with frame rates of 120fps at 320x240 (QVGA) and 60fps at 640x480 (VGA); GPS; Bluetooth 2.1+EDR; PlayStation Vita card slot; memory card slot; a SIM card slot; and a multi-use port for USB data communication, DC IN, Audio (Stereo Out / Mono In), Serial data communication. For the complete run down on specs, check the sheet below.

Unfortunately, Sony didn’t offer anything more specific than ‘the end of 2011’ with regards to release, but we’re assuming the company won’t want to miss the chance to take advantage of the holiday shopping frenzy that is November/December. Oh, and in case you were wondering about the name:
“"Vita," which means "Life" in Latin, was chosen as the most appropriate name for the next generation portable entertainment system as it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context,” Sony aid in a statement. “SCE is aiming to transform every aspect of user's daily life into an entertainment experience.”

I don't really like the name, but I'm not gonna lie, that thing is pretty sexy.
Specs are very impressive.
I've no complaints with the pricing at all, they will sell a pant load of them. Being in Canada I suspect I'll be lucky and be able to buy the 3G version with no strings attached. The AT&T bit was a big downer in an otherwise excellent event from Sony.
I think I would be more likely to carry around the Wii U controller around the house than this. Reason: I rarely have leasure time if I'm not at home.
Finally, two sticks! - Sadly I just don't use my PSP enough to be that interested in the next generation.
Price seems reasonable for the specs. And despite the innovation of both the 3DS and and WII U, this has excited me the most.
Just that 3d seems like it would create headaches after hours of gameplay and the Wii U controller seems clunky and unconfortable.
Shouldn't that be the Sony POS Vita?

hey now just because you are doesn't mean everything else is
i think they just killed the 3G version the moment they mentioned AT&T
As long as I still have the capability to purchase games retail and not have to deal with PSN I'm game.

Great, now the stereo type that nerds need to get a life is gone... Me: Hey You! Get a life!.....Nerd: I already do! You get one! Me: 0, Nerd 1.
The explosion of social networks may have connected us at an unprecedented level, but I feed that it has made us a more socially awkward society in the fact that people no longer socialize in person the way we used to...E.g. The increased percentage of people meeting online to find love.
People poke on Facebook instead of actually talking to the person they're interested in.

Sonys event was very impressive, and the vita looks very good. And its way cheaper than i originally thought. they learned from the spanking they received from the $600 ps3. Despite nintendo unveiling new console, i found sonys conference to be the best. Solid hardcore gaming. I really hope kojima shows snatchers 2
Those are reasonable prices in my opinion. I think Nintendo could have a bit of a problem on its hands if the 3DS goes up against an equally priced Vita.
Gonna be a great device.
But... AT&T? /facepalm
They didn't mention how much RAM that thing has, did they?
I'd say that's a pretty IMPORTANT piece of information, no?

nope
as long as the games look good and play well the system could have 32MB of ram for all i care
Powerful device. Someone make an app to turn this thing into a smartphone with free calling and I'll toss out my samsung android phone and switch to this.

lol. Excellent use of punctuation and grammar. Good retort. You're one awesome guy. Your dads must be proud.

by just going after the punctuation and grammar and nothing else just proves my comment was right
want to try again or is that all you got? thought so
What a stupid name!
Its nice...but Wii U looks better!
I am not sure the actual reasoning for having the touchpad on the back of the unit. The touchscreen yes, but that seems a bit excessive. I never liked the devices with 3G included, much rather just have wifi. I like online gaming but wouldn't pay extra for that.
This may be my first handheld console, ever! And I've been gaming since the Atari 2600.
The AT&T deal might kill it for me though..

You're just mad that Sony made another pile of... well, crap. Sony fanbois, always crying about something.
I'm no AT&T fan but I can't blame Sony by going with them. All the other carriers don't like taking risks on new tech until they see it being profitable. AT&T is will to invest in new ventures. So for now I guess we all have to EMBRACE THE SUCK!
I don't get the point on handheld games, but they should move to HD gaming, I mean 320x240 (QVGA) and 60fps at 640x480 (VGA)
seriously?

that's the camera dude... not the display resolution.

Fail.
The price is right on the cutoff line I specified. I'm no console or portable gamer (last portable device I bought was Game Boy) but for the specs at that price, even I may spring for one.
This would be a good replacement for my aging Nokia tablet/palmtop, if it could run Linux. Sadly, I'm not hopeful...
nice specs. 480 on a 5 inch screen really puts our 1080 24" to shame. and 4 cores on a handheld is really mind boggling.
I am impressed, but knowing this is a product coming from SONY. It'll be completely ANTI-FRIENDLY towards home brews. Sad.
