Kinect Requires At Least 6 Feet to Play by Yourself
Before you get your Kinect on and start flailing around with reckless abandon you might want to make sure you have at least 6 feet of space in front of your television.
Back in March, when it was still being referred to as Project Natal, there were rumors that anyone playing with Microsoft's new motion-sensing peripheral would need a whopping four meters (13 feet) of space in front of their TV. Microsoft quickly rushed to ensure gamers that the system would work in smaller living rooms but neglected to mention exactly how much it would require.
Luckily for us, one Kotaku reader scouring the manual has figured out just that. According to the user manual those of us looking to play all on our lonesome will need 1.8 meters, or 6 feet of space. If you want to have some friends over to play, you'll need at least 8 feet of space.
If I move my coffee table I can play single player. If I move my coffee table and stand on my couch, I can play multiplayer. Unfortunately, I don't know if my couch could support me and another person jumping around like big eejits. I expect many people living in apartments will be in the same boat. Is your sitting room big enough to play Kinect? Let us know in the comments below!

"Is your sitting room big enough to play Kinect?"
NO
Actually, I will keep my PS3.. So, I don't need to bother with that.
I thought I was supposed to stand as close as I can to the furniture.
Oh, please, this is just being picky!
Ok, it does need some space but what were you expecting? To able able to "dance" with Kinect standing half a meter away from your TV?
I agree that many people don't have that much empty space, especially considering that the fun with Kinect will not be with single play, but do your really play tennis on the Nintendo Wii standing very close to your expensive TV set?
Kinect will require some more space, but that is a given, considering that your will be using your entire body.
moving a table/desk/pet/wife is alright for some hours of real fun...
Yes, more than big enough.
Microsoft Kinect will never enter this house though.
I wonder how much of that space requirement is for the technical demands of the system, and how much of it is just for personal safety.
Arm going through TV will suck a lot more then WiiMote going through TV.
Kinect = fail...
If I want to wave my hands and jump like an idiot I'll go to the local stadium.
Motion recognition is nice but if it will work well for games... we'll see. I doubt that it will be more than e niche market.
Now That's Incredible, Only 6 Feet.. Even my Wii Takes dat much space wid Super Poor Graphics by good experience..

I think, Kinect's gonna Rock everybody's place..
GO Microsoft Go..!!
Waiting eagerly for WP7 & Kinect to be Launched..
This is just a means of avoiding lawsuits

the title to the article to the article can be a little dirty if red wrog... just saying...
as for space yea even small living rooms in apartments are at least 10 by 10 (at least in my area) so 6 feet isn't so bad
...eejits, you say...
When I bought my LCD tv way back when the rule of thumb was to sit about three times the screen size from the set to have an optimal view; 42" equating to roughly 3m. I'm no expert but from my experience it makes sense. So 6 feet of space implies a 24" screen, and I suspect most Xbox users surpass that, meaning most users will have that sort of space. Unless you like jamming to Guitar Hero on a 4:3 17" :-)
more like play with yourself. I don't understand this type of gaming. GTF outside and run around instead.
Didn't Major Nelson already have a video about this last week?
move = crap, project natal = crap, wii = crap, rockband = amazing
I will not be buying any system that requires me to move. I play games to lazz around. Wii is for my mom!
Hi and welcome to shopping... err... oops, I think I'm being brainwashed.
I have the feeling many people won't have enough room and thus won't be buying it, but 6 feet is reasonable. After all, it's a motion system. I hardly see how you can efficiently move and expect the system to recognize you if you barely stand up with your arms stuck to your body.
I'm lucky enough to have a big living room even if I only have a 3½, but I'm still gonna wait to see some game reviews before considering it.
Please people Kinect is still in its infancy. Think back to the first 10 years of personal computing. You could not even dream of video games such as Crysis or Far Cry 2. Give Kinect another year, two if you are patient. Let's see what major game development firms can come up with in both game content and hardware/software refinement.
oh, those kind of feet...

What I want to know, can it still digitally remove your fingers from an image of your snowboard when you digitize it?
is this mandatory or just a suggestion to get the most out of kinect. The move suggest a distance of 6-8 feet but i doing just fine from 4 feet away. Can the same be done with the kinect or will the kinect just not work if it senses you are closer than 6 feet.
oh, those kind of feet...
Bravo Sir.

Note: I've spent a fair amount of time with one.
You couldn't do it with 4 feet. It wouldn't have a wide enough angle to see your legs (or your raised arms depending on how you had the sensor positioned). There is also front and back "wall" to the sensor zone. I know it's closer than 6 feet..maybe about 4? but you need to stand at 6 so you'll have room for your arms/legs to extend forward. It would work for basic console and media controls though..you don't pause with your feet
You need more room for two players for the side to side space. It's viewing you from a camera(ish thing). so the sensor space with a front and back wall resembles a trapezoid rather than a rectangle on the floor. To get the extra width for two people you gotta move back just a bit to have room not to whack each other.
.
Besides even if 6 feet is fine for the sensor it won't be fine for the player. You'll need more room to move around. To give you a rough idea: picture the space needed for a hyperactive wii player. It's about that much.

The short version: You'll find the space requirements very reasonable I doubt there will be any complaints except by those that are just...man what were you thinking with your dinky little closet apartment?
My living room is probably barely enough, but I'm happy with PC gaming.
Nope, my tiny 1 bedroom apartment will not have room for that.
they announced this a long time ago, we are talking months, im not sure why its just posted now
I can barely see my TV from 6 feet away. I need new glasses bad.
I think people who complain about the space requirements should just play this on their 3rd story balcony or higher,,, come'on,, its just common sense for them to indicate space so you're not smashing into things or your friends and to help prevent some lawsuits like for those reasons,,,, the wii even needs some room and you better be damn sure that so will the move,,, 6 feet is not a lot of room at all, if your room is too small to make room for a single player,, you may be better just putting your money in the bank and saving for a larger apartment or house,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,OR MAYBE MOVE OUT OF YOUR MOMS BASEMENT!!
