Haiti: Man Uses iPhone and Camera to Survive

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

His gadgets saved his life.

There's no shortage of horror stories surrounding the tragic conditions present in Haiti. Similarly, there's no question of how much technology has helped rescue those trapped, buried under the rubble of their home or their place of work. Usually this technology is being used by the rescuers, but one American film maker used his phone and his SLR to aid his survival until a rescue crew found him three days later.

Dan Woolley was in Haiti with Compassion International, a mission organization, making a film about the impact of poverty on the people of Haiti. As he and a colleague headed back to their hotel rooms, the earthquake hit and Woolley found himself buried under six stories of rubble.

Having lost his glasses, Dan's nearsighted vision was getting the better of him. Woolley told MSNBC that by using the focusing light on his camera and taking pictures, he was able to figure out where he was. Dan did this until he finally found an elevator to take cover in.

Next he used an iPhone app to treat a compound fracture in his leg. The app instructed him on how to make a tourniquet for his leg and a bandage for a head wound. It also warned him that if he felt he was going into shock, he should not fall asleep, so Woolley set an alarm to go off every 20 minutes.

Woolley also wrote goodbye notes to his family and friends, which thankfully, he didn't need. This week he was reunited with his family in Colorado.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but how in the world did his iPhone battery last 3 days? My wife's iPhone 3GS is dead after 1 day...

Furthermore, I'm amazed the cell phone towers were operational after the earthquake, if they only built them that well in the states.

well, I'm sure he didn't use his iPhone for entertainment while down there. After he went through everything in that article, he probably put it on standby with that alarm on. Cell phone towers? you don't need cell phone reception to use the Apps

I'm pretty sure the did most of this during first day on the day of the quake...

and whatever app he used, I'm sure he already had it on his iPhone and were not able to connect to anywhere for past 3 days and hoping someone would find his farewell note on his iPhone if he died....

thankfully he was able to treat his wound and keep himself awake during critical first day.....

Battery could last 3 days if it was in flight mode and not polling for a signal every 5 min.
Mind you I would rather have it looking for a signal on the off chance.

Check theregister.co.uk for the full story on this one.
Makes much more sense about how his battery lasted etc etc.

Surprised Tom's didn't just lift the story from that site as usual tbh.

very nice! That guy must have had strong will power and great common sense to treat a compound fracture all by himself, remain calm, and use what he had to stay alive.

The important thing to remember is his will to live and I'm happy he made it through.

Here's the link to the register article: iPhone keeps buried earthquake victim alive for three days...

If the cell towers WERE working and I got reception. I'd send a text to a friend, and update google latitude.

So basically because the Register had a one line, tongue in cheek remark that he must have had it on flight mode to make it last for three days, it makes much more sense? Other readers have already drawn the conclusion that it "must have been in standby." Heck, even when I was writing it I wondered whether it was in flight mode or not.

In the interviews I watched (and I watched more than one), Woolley never specified how long the battery lasted. People complain when we make assumptions and include anything but the facts in articles. Then, people complain that we should have included either our own assumptions, or the assumptions of a reporter on another site.

Chalking this one up to, "Damned if you do, damned if you don't."

Hehe sounds almost like a PR story. :D
Seriously though people, Survival 101 - Torniques are mostly used in Hollywood movies. It can easily cause ischemia of the wound and an anaerobic infection leaving you with an extremity that must be amputated. Unless you have a massive wound, some pressure (with the hand) applied an inch before the wound - not on it - should suffice. Just as a FYI :)
If the guy in the story could walk, there was probably no massive wound :)

Not to belittle his situation, but i find it sad that he needed an iphone app to realize that he needed to put a bandage on his wounds. If i were burried in a collapsed building, bleeding uncontrollably from multiple wounds, the first thing i would have thought was "well, i better find something to stop all this bleeding before i pass out", not "i wonder what my iPhone app says i should do about all this bleeding..." Oh well. Need common sense? There's an app for that...

It should probably be noted that any smartphone could have done the same thing...and perhaps the ones with flashlights would have been more useful than a camera.

I am fairly certain he used to iphone apps to aid him in properly attending to those wounds, not to tell him he needs to attend to them. your assumption is assuming he is a complete idiot, when obviously he isn't, he managed to use what he had with him to survive, for that I give him major kudos.

classic... and to think, his friends were probably telling him that the iphone was an overhyped glamor toy... course he may have had cell phone reception if he had Verizon's 3g coverage.

but seriously he used an iphone app to treat his wound, that means HE saved his own life, NOT his iphone, the iphone did not mend his wound for him, and if he doesn't know to put pressure on a wound to stop bleeding, how the hell did he manage to walk to the store and intelligently buy an iphone! because that just logic, and his wound must of been so massively bad that he able to walk out, i find this a load of BS really, my $40 nokia had a flash light, better than the iphone, man apple are wierd, they could sell dogsdhit call it ishit an everyone would buy it!

Does one really need an app for how to make a tourniquet?

Really?

A lot of people don't know how to use a tourniquet correctly. Things can go really badly wrong if they're not correctly used. As in, amputation wrong.

Also, he used the light on his camera, and just kept taking photos until he saw an elevator in one of them.

Seriously, if you go to the doctor with a twisted ankle and he tells you to put it on ice and just stay off it for two days would you say the doctor fixed you or you fixed you?

I'd say I want my copay back, or at least a prescription for some drugs. I like drugs. I wonder if there's an app for finding reputable drug dealers?
