If you live in a rainy climate, are finished with school until September, or just happen to be a professional couch potato, Blockbuster has a Summer offer that you’ll definitely want to take advantage of.
Blockbuster this morning sent out a press release announcing the Summer Escape Pass. Available at all participating Blockbuster stores, the passes give customers one week of unlimited movie and game rentals for $10.
Of course, Blockbuster cites the tragic economy as the reason for this incredibly sweet deal: Jim Keyes, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer with Blockbuster Inc., is quoted as saying, "No matter what the economy is doing or what the weather is like, the Summer Escape Pass from Blockbuster gives customers an inexpensive way to have a great night out by staying in."
Unfortunately, those of you planning to have a Star Wars marathon and watch all six movies (seven if you count The Clone Wars, but who does?) can forget about it. The Pass is only good for one rental at a time, which is kind of lame but when you consider regular rentals cost between $3 and $5, you’ll still save a ton of money renting one game or movie a day.

I have a feeling this has nothing to do with the economy, and everything to do with companies like Netflix murdering Blockbuster's customer base. I think I'd rather pay $5 for a month of movies that are delivered to my door.
$10 for 1 week of unlimited blockbuster movies, limited selection, 1 movie at a time? Netflix is $4.50 per week, 3 at a time, and you don't even have to drive to the movie store.
The only reason to go to Blockbuster instead of Netflix is if your mailbox ran away from home and you have no way of receiving Netflix movies.
Our local BB store charges $1/day for normal movies, $2/day for new releases, as many as you want to get at one time. I'm not driving back and forth to the store for one movie at a time for $10.
What blockbuster really needs is a low monthly fee with unlimited amounts of rentals and allow a higher amount of rentals than Netflix and include games into the deal. Then maybe I would consider using them.
Its been years before I even walked into Blockbuster and I don't see myself ever doing so again.
This doesnt really sound like that great of a deal.
Netflix FTW!
People still rent from Blockbuster?
they should allow you to rent the candy mmm snickers bars
if they allowed you to rent games and movies in unlimited quantities what says you dont return and yes you would sign up with a fake address and stuff of course but still yah games are expensive so the low fee wouldnt be to low you would probably beable to do something like upto 8 movies maybe 3 games for a modest 15-20$ with varying smaller packages id pay for that especially if they did the whole mail thing and then return them to a store to get more movies
Ha.
My local blockbuster has offered the same deal for games at $29 Canadian dollars (~$26 USD) for 1 month segments.
What makes this special?
I pay $40 a month for all the games and movies I want in unlimited quantity (all movies, and 95%+ of games) for as long as I want.
$40 is how much my ISP chares me monthly...
Aaargh me matey!
...what says you dont return and yes you would sign up with a fake address and stuff...
Because typically these accounts are linked to your credit card (has anyone tried one of those $50 prepaid visas?).
People still rent from Blockbuster?
Yes...
Every once in a while I go there to decide what I want to download.
I can support my ISP or I can support Blockbuster and Hollywood. I like the one who gives me more than just the movies and games (and I buy games I love usually anyways).
Netflix uses poor temp workers to staff their warehouses and i will not support that especially since i work in a videostore.
my friend owns Videoport here in Portland, maine and i have been his right hand man for 14 years now.that is my day job then at night i am an artist.
i would support the little guy who has a shop than big corporate blockbuster or big faceless netflix.
you guys should help out your local economy by buying local when possible
I have not been into a Blockbuster in 5+ years and this deal doesn't sound enticing at all. Why in the world would I want to drive back and forth from Blockbuster to rent one movie at a time when I can sit at home and have movies delivered to my door? This deal would be cool if they had something like 5 at a time max but as it stands now this is just retarded. Waste more than $10 just driving there and back. Blockbuster just doesn't get it.
Who rents movies anymore? I just pirate all my movies online, throw them on a USB stick and plug into the DVD player that plays DIVX movies from the USB stick. It's free and fast. Wait, is that wrong? Oh, that's right - since the recording industry started going after people for every little thing I no longer pay them a dime for any music or video - I steal it all. Sorry RIAA, you lost my business years ago.
lol, I like the comment above and do the same thing. The only reason I go to Hollywood/Blockbuster web sites are to see what movies I should download. The coming soon section on Hollywood pretty much tells what what should be available on torrent. Usually 1-2 weeks before release is a good copy out there. Screw the industry, greedy movie stars making millions of dollars a year but people that work 10x as hard make $30k. Screw em all.
i use iTunes to figure out whats hot. Also, I work at Best Buy, so I have access to thousand of titles for ideas, and I know about new releases. BitTorrent FTW. BTW I buy the stuff I really like, and just keep it in the box.
I got sick of signing up for some Blockbuster super deal, then a month later having them raise the price, over and over and over. Now, i have been Blockbuster free for about 8 months and have not missed it at all, a combination of buying used DVDs from FYE and netflix streaming have saved me a ton of money. Blockbuster can go down in flames for all i care, they deserve it.
You got to be joking. I was on Hollywood video (MVP) unlimited rental for like 9.99 or was it 14.99 per month 2.5 years ago before I join netflix.
I done the $15 for 7 days, and all i did was copied 6-8 blu-rays movies per day.
You CANT do that in a short time with any other mailing service. Once the 7 days is expired, it doesn't auto renew so it's not any hassle also.

And I hope you get your ass busted with your illegal DVD's, are forced to pay a huge fine, or spend time in jail. Stealing hasn't and will never be the answer to what you think the problems are. You, sir, are just making the problem worse, much much worse.
Rent a movie, copy it onto your laptop in your car, then go back and rent another. There's the solution to your star wars marathon problem.
Yes, I know I'm awesome.
Netflix may not rent games but their success is due to the streaming. Blockbuster needs to do something to keep themselves alive and this is a step in the right direction, but the lost me at 7 days.
Where i live blockbuster charges almost 7 bucks for a one night rental my corner mac's milk 99 cents, thats the reason why i don't rent from block buster anymore.
I can rent a movie cheaper ANYWHERE else that can't even get close with the so call deals.
It's a deal if you are renting Blu-Ray.
A few things I would like to point out here:
-Blueray rentals cost the same as outter wall dvd rentals at blockbuster. Not so bad a deal.
-Some people actually enjoy driving out and wandering around a dvd store for a bit looking at all the movies.
-Last time I checked, driving to the store to rent a movie was faster then waiting on the mailman.
-Blockbuster has a different corporate architecture then netflix. BB also has brick&mortar buildings. Of course it is going to be more expensive.
-Movie star salaries are not determined by BB, why criticize BB for this?
and last but not least: p05esto
Pirating/torrenting without paying a dime is considered stealing. Last time I checked this is a serious crime. Why wouldnt the RIAA go after every person it found pirating? Do you honestly believe they are innocent? In a world without pirating there would be no trouble. People like you bicker about the effect, though are a prime cause.
This is only a decent deal if you have a BB right next door. Any real person should realize that driving a few miles back and forth to the store each day ruins the savings.
I actually didn't mind the Clone Wars!
It was at least as good as Episode One if not better.
@ssddx:
"Last time I checked this is a serious crime."
Really? Where do you live? In North America it has NEVER been defined as a criminal act (i.e. jail time?). If it were, it would be prosecuted in criminal court. So far, the only traction media companies have had is in civil court, where the burden of proof is MUCH less (and where it's pretty clear that most of the time when a little guy is fighting a bigger guy with huge pockets the huge pockets win).
The fact of the matter is downloading media CANNOT BE STOPPED, no matter how much the media companies wish it could be. Whether or not P2P is right or wrong, the media companies have to realize that they have to change, if they don't, they will disappear (which personally may not be such a bad thing).
And here I thought Blockbuster went out of business.
Maybe that's just the Blockbuster in my town that literally disappeared overnight, without notice to it's employees.
repatch,
Are you a pirate or are you just condoning their actions?
I would not go so far as to say that it cannot be stopped. It could, however, I highly doubt anyone is ready for a big brother situation. The real problem is that it seems to be accepted, and even suggested by the masses. What if someone was stealing the interest from your savings account, would that be accepted as well? Theft is theft, no matter how you pretty it up.
And I quote:
The label will replace the old variety of labels already shown in most of the media products and will also be significantly more visible on the product cover. The new warning says:
"All Right Reserved. The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, may be investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to five years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000."
Trade groups behind the initiative were MPAA, RIAA and ESA (Entertainment Software Association that represent video game publishers).
The warning usually applies to the sale, publication, public showings and distribution of copywriten materials such as movies, music and TV shows for the extent of making profit without special consent of the copywrite holder.
If you plan to only watch the movie/TV show in your own home or make a backup copy for your personal library, that is acceptable.
It is only when you plan to make money on the showing or sale of the movie/TV show that you are breaking the law.
The warning is there to warn you not to break the law.
Wow, what a crap deal. At least make it like 3 movies per day, so that you can grab a few and chill at home for a couple of days before going back again. $10/week wtf? You would have to drive back to the video store twice in 1 day, on multiple occasions, to even take advantage of this deal. Who the hell is going to do that? Realistically you are only going to probably get 4-5 movies tops, making each rental more around $2 a pop. Which is what they charge already.
Gotta hand it to tom's for another sham product placement courtesy of their advertisement paymasters.
For the piracy debate- What If I bought tools and materials and made copies of car, suits, powerboats, computers, etc. for myself? That is not 'stealing' from the manufacturer of those products- selling the copies is illegal for patent reasons, but personal use is not illegal. Digital media is not material goods. One 'copy' is the same as 1 million- the only way to enforce DRM is to cripple basic capabilities of our computers and the internet to protect rights of the few in an industry that is basically a monopoly. To protect Hollywood, Big brother needs to know what you are doing so you are not downloading "Big Brother, seasons 1-12" I wholly support them creating their own systems, like Apple, kindle, settop boxes, etc. to protect their rights or fees on ISP and cable to cover the 'artists', but I do not want them mucking around my ISP connection or my devices or creating a closed internet system just so Hollywood whores can afford another Yacht.
