Next-Gen, Dual-Core iPhone May Appear in April

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The iPhone 4G will be even meatier than the 3GS, sporting dual-core processors and better graphics.

The Korea Times reports that Apple's Korean iPhone partner KT is introducing a 4G iPhone sometime in April, with a full-fledged release planned for June. This updated model is slated to have an OLED screen (organic light-emitting diode), video chat functionality, and possibly a removable battery. Although there are still some 3G iPhones in stock, both Apple and BT agreed that the advanced models should hit the market as quickly as possible... probably due to release of Google's Nexus One smartphone.

In addition to the OLED screen and removable battery, the new iPhone 4G will sport dual-core processors, and an advanced graphics chip that can deliver higher video resolutions. There's also indication that the new model will feature a better camera for "better 'still' images when taking pictures."

"With KT, we've been in talks with other telecom carriers to gauge the launching timing of 4G iPhones in South Korea. More tech-oriented features will be added to the models," a representative of Apple’s South Korean office said. The comments also solidify reports that Apple has supplied a new iPhone 4.0 beta SDK that includes a "simulator" that supposedly makes it easy to adapt applications to different screen resolutions.

If there is indeed a new iPhone 4G heading to the market in June, we're betting that AT&T won't be the happy recipient here in the States. Although we've tried desperately for the company to cough up juicy details, we're betting Verizon Wireless will get this model, an advanced version of the iPhone (3GS) currently offered by its rival.

As much as I hate the iPhone, I do really like when they release improvements to it. The better the iPhone gets, the better every competing phone must get.

If Apple really wants to lawl all the way to the bank, they'll get rid of the Carrier-specific shenanagains, toss out models that do both CDMA/EVDO and GSM/UMTS(HSDPA). Not only would this step up the bar for ALL phones, but it would alleviate some of the network issues AT&T has been having, as well as not annahilate the Verizon EVDO network like the iPhone 3G and 3Gs did to AT&T.

As much as Verizon fanboys WHARRGARBL about their network, if big V had the influx of users and sheer network payload that AT&T went through with the iPhone, they wouldn't fare any better. Remember kiddos, coverage doesn't necessarily imply capacity.

Correction to the first sentence: "toss out two models, each doing either CDMA/EVDO or GSM/UMTS(HSDPA)."

wow, now that it can physically run 2 threads at a time, might it finally get F'ing multitasking?? these specs WOULD be exciting, except I got excited over the specs of the 3GS, they are great IN THEORY but they are yet to be taken full advantage of! I would have thought apple would have focused on features rather than specs this time round...

the problem with the 3GS might have been that if you coded apps to take full advantage of it, it wouldn't be compatible with the old version (openGL 1.0 vs 2.0(shaders)) fortunetly, the same will not be true for the new version, it will be much more compatible with the 3gs, as new versions come out, hopefully we can drop support for the first gen one, and begin to take full advantage of the new tech while still suporting older models , down to the 3GS, with ease.

It looks like Apple's products aren't so easy to use after all!

LOL!

Contrary to popular belief, the iPhone DOES support multitasking. You can listen to music while surfing the web or checking e-mails no problem. The restriction is SOFTWARE based. Jailbreak the phone and you can have as many applications running as the phone's memory can handle.

The QUALITY of the camera needs to improve, and it needs a flash.

True support for multitasking would be nice, but it should be an option you activate yourself. Why? Because normal people are too stupid to close apps, thus resulting in poor performance. We wouldn't want the technologically dense individuals giving it a bad name.

I'd also like to see FLASH SUPPORT!!!! This is completely unacceptable in a smartphone now-a-days.

And finally, I seriously doubt Apple will add a removable battery. It would make the battery smaller and the phone fatter. Besides, by the time the iPhone's battery really degrades, it's already time to renew and buy the NEW iPhone with your discount.

I just hope it doesn't take them too long to release the iPod equivalent. I'm not signing a contract, but i want the device anyway.

The exclusivity contract with AT&T ends this year. There is hope.
Luke Wilson will need to actually make movies for a living.

Not allowing multitasking is not a processor issue. It's a security decision in the first place. And there is multitasking in Iphone, most Apple apps can run in the background.

Yah, but wouldn't it be nice if you could open an instant messenger on it and then do something else and messenger would stay logged in?

Higher resolution screen would be sweet, dual core? Sure why not.

Removable battery? That shouldn't be a feature, honestly thats only a feature with apple products... Its common place with everyone else.

What's the point of having a faster iPhone when it still makes you wait for the ridiculous fades and wipes and zoom ins/outs it still makes you watch between tasks?! I hate my phone so much. WHY DO I NEED TO WASTE HALF THE TIME JUST STARING AT THESE INANE ANIMATIONS?!

Dual core..awesome. Now it will get twice as hot twice as fast. Always wondered what it would be like carrying a lava brick in my pants.

This announcement basically implied that all of the single-core iPhones out there will worth less in April.

While hardware upgrades are good, what the iPhone really needs is longer battery life through better power management and for Apple to open up all the bluetooth profiles on the phone. Running multiple apps can easily be done if your iPhone is jailbroken.

what's the point of dual-core if iPhone can basically run only single application? I don't think many applications for iPhone would be capable of multithreading... So what's the point of having dual core CPU if only 1 core can be used?

The "fades, wipes and zooms" you refer to is Apple's way of making the interface not stutter or seemingly produce less lag during operations. To most users this provides a better overall user experience.

"Waste half the time staring at inane animations"? Wow so either your phone has a serious lag issue or you are spending about 1-2sec in a app before exiting. Most of the animations a less than one second in length (most 450ms). Thats 450 one hundredths of one second. Seiously? Half the time?

But you had to have seem that the first time you picked up an iphone. So this begs the question, why did you get it in the fist place?

My suggestion is to get a another phone that suits you because the animations are deep within the core of the iphone OS and they aren't going anywhere.
