Analysts Predict Influx of Apps in 2010

11:01 AM - December 4, 2009 - By Jane McEntegart - Source : Tom's Guide US

As if there weren't enough farting apps already, analysts say 2010 will bring a lot of new apps. And when we say a lot, we mean a lot.

IDC analysts published a list of predictions for next year and, while the iPad prediction is, well, predictable, there are some rather interesting forecasts for the app world.

According to IDC, iPhone apps are going to triple. Considering the App Store has already surpassed a hundred thousand apps, that means adding just under two hundred thousand apps in just one year. We guarantee you will have nearly zero use for 99.07 percent of them (assuming 1,000 useful apps exist).

Those of you using Android devices aren't safe from this app-invasion either. IDC predicts Android apps will quintuple next year. Despite there being considerably fewer applications for Android devices - PC World reports that there are roughly 20,000 Android apps available – such a big jump will have the number of Android apps available next year nearly equaling the number of iPhone apps available today. Plenty of boobies and farting applications for all. Hurray!

To achieve these numbers, Apple will need to approve 692 apps per weekday for 52 weeks straight. The Android team over at Google will need to approve 307 new apps per weekday for 52 weeks straight.

Question: How does the approval process for apps on the iPhone @ Apple differ for those on Android at Google?

Just my hunch, but I think Android apps will surpass iPhone in the coming year in both quantity and quality. Android resides on many handsets from many manufacturers. There are also no country-wide exclusivity agreements in place for Android phones (or at least the Android OS). Considering smartphones are now surpassing the iPhone in every category, adoption of Android will significantly spike in 2010. This is because innovative companies like Motorola and HTC can focus on hardware while Google continues developing the Android OS. Apple's 'sandbox' business model seems no longer as effective as before.

Yeah, and how many of those apps contain duplicate functionality vs originality

How about "directives" each "app" is a "directive" to do something.

Or you can use "functions"

people, it's gotta be a catchy phrase. "app" is to application as "shots" would be to snapshots...

so while Functions or directives could be used, there would be no catchy phrase to use. "funct" just sounds weird and "dirs", just no...

it would need to be something cool that all the cool people "must have"

I have a Droid, and find there's already enough apps out there. The Android Market isn't that easy to search through even. Google needs to add a lot more filters with how many more are being predicted to be added. Though I imagine there will be a plateau and won't reach the estimated numbers.

I certainly hope to see major apps creators porting their products to Android (one example, ePocrates and Merck Manual); these are already available for Palm/iPhone/WinMo. That would help even more the adoption of Android phones if you add the huge functionality of a popular app to it.

Like what... "cations"?! Its short for applications so i dont see another words for it. Though if it starts turning into another appstore they might as well call them crapaware.

No mention of Palms WebOS? It's doubled in the past 2 months!

Joking aside, Palm is releasing a visual style of creating Applications for WebOS which will lead to a flood of nearly useless apps of its own.
It's called Ares: http://www.precentral.net/ares-web [...] later-year

How about Program. Just talk about it like you would for anything installed on your PC.

Sounds like there is entirely too much duplication of effort.

Instead of functions, lets call them Methods, which would be Meth for short... Or maybe not...
