While PlayStation fans tirelessly await an announcement from Sony regarding a price cut for the PS3, Amazon has gone ahead and cut the price of the console.
Games Industry reports that Amazon has loped fifty bucks off the price of a 160 GB PS3, taking the console's $499 price tag down to $449. Your nearly-$450 will get you one 160 GB PS3, a copy of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and a voucher to download PAIN.
The news comes just a couple of weeks before Gamescon in Cologne, Germany. The run up to Gamescon has so far included rumors that Sony will not only cut the price of the PS3 but also introduce a PS3 Slim. Read the full story here.

Still overpriced methinks =/
Correct
Cheaper at half the price!
Knock it down to $250 - $300 and I'll buy one. Otherwise it's just an over-glorified GPU without decent I/O devices.

Actually the GPU is the LEAST impressive part of the PS3, and whats wrong with its I/O? Hdmi/hdmi audio, gigabit, wireless, support for 3rd party peripherals, eyetoy, bluray/DVD, media streaming...
The only thing i can think your saying is that its only useful as a supercomputer, and in this regard, i'll think you'll find its a bargain.
I don't think its overpriced, i think its just too expensive for a games console.
If it came in at $399 I think people would see that first "3" and think it's not too bad (even though it would be over $400 with tax). Shoppers often decide their price range by the first digit and thus something will sell significantly better at $399 than say $401. Still a $50 price cut is progress but I don't think it's enough to spur the kinda sales that Sony needs.
you could just buy the 80GB version and replace the HDD yourself or even use an external hard drive for saves and downloads and media. unlike a certain other company that thinks charging $70 for 60GB is nice.

That's why you build your own 120 gig drive for the 360 for like 50 bucks.
hmm 450 for outdated hardware..let's see.....yes still bad.

How I was wanting to do this a while ago but could not find info on it is 120 gb the max??
Luckily I got my PS3 used for a measly $300 bucks since I agree that a brand new ps3 is grossly overpriced. Didn't Sony just say that the price of producing a PS3 fall my 70%? If you ask me cut the price dramatically and live with the smaller profit margin since when it was launched there was no profit was there?
I agree with Cr0w. If they managed to cut 30% of the cost of making/distributing this thing, then they should have some additional padding on the bottom line to flood the market with them.
And yes, its I/O sucks. Would you pay $60 for a mediocre keyboard? I wouldn't.
err ... thats not news.

newegg has been selling the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for 450 for a long ass time. and if you just want the PS3 itself, its 360 bux shipped.
wow ... time to update your news Tomshardware
Hence why I said it was over-glorified.
For those who said PS3 is "overpriced"
I want you to build me a computer for 500 bucks that can play Blu-Ray, Media Center, High Def Games on a 1080p TV without lagging with all legal software and be able to boot up in less than 10 seconds.
If you can't please stfu cheap fucks.
seems that ATi has AWSOME luck with Console clients ....Wii(most successful console) is ATi GPU and PS2(greatest console ever made)..overtook Xbox(Nv gpu)...was an ATi gpu...now Xbox 360 now switched to Ati and they best PS3 by both, games and price...seems that Ait's "more value less pickpocketing" console GPU pricing pays off...
Newegg.com, been 449 with exact same bundle since the bundle retailed for 499.

Now you provide me with custom OS which will fully take advanage of this hardware then we'll talk about which system is faster PS3 or $500 PC
As far as 60fps without lag, you might be in denial if you think games on PS3 don't dip below 60 fps during intense fight scenes.
Yeah the whole argument that a good PC for around the same price of the console can't be done is dead. PC hardware has not only advanced quite well these last few years but the prices are great as well.
What's even better is the fact that we can buy dirt cheap blu-ray drives as well and just hook our PC to our TVs and enjoy the movies. Of course we are also not limited to just games or movies like the consoles.
The cost of each console keeps increasing with every generation while PC hardware is getting cheaper and is still superior. Lets not forget when a new console comes out the old consoles cannot play the new games. PC's on the other hand can just on lower settings making it no rush to go out to play the games. Upgrading at your own convince and still being able to play the games beats being forced to buy a new console to play the new game at all.

Uhh, yes it can be done for $500 if you get the Win 7 RC for free. You can then install XBMC or Boxee, which makes the PS3 media feature look like crap. You can also use a 360 controller with most games. I think the argument is that the PS3 has been out for 2.5 years and has been outsold by the PS2 since that time, so why don't they do game developers and publishers and gamers a favor and just cut the price already to something under $400 so that people would actually buy it and developers would create games for it. If they announced a 70% fab reduction, then the next logical move would then be to reduce the MSRP, otherwise why announce the fab costs. We all assumed the hefty price was attributed to the high manufacturing costs, but that can't be anymore.
Sony is strategically brilliant for a price cut at this time with the news of Wii's saturation. There was no need going neck to neck on pricing with the Wii and now Sony can fight to pick up the void for those wanting to upgrade from the Wii. $50 is probably just testing the waters. If sales picks up nicely they'll go all out against MS.

Without lagging? most games drop to 20fps on ps3.

This isn't very interesting when you consider that Dell constantly has 15% off coupons for game consoles.
Own 2 PS2, Still no PS3. I perfer my i7
when these sony ps3 go down to $200 - $250 i might just buy one otherwise no way
and no way to the expensive blu-ray crud.

How does one get voted down for that? You guys are a unique bunch on Tom's.
they need to start making the PS3s that could play PS2 an PS games again...

Why is it so hard to understand why people consider the PS3 overpriced ? Sure, it offers a HELL of a lot for the price. BUT , it's only a good deal if you value all of its features. If you want Blu-Ray, wireless connectivity, nice media capabilities, a powerful Cell processor and a big hard drive for storage, then YES it's a great deal. Unfortunately, the statistics show that the average person just doesn't put much value on these extra features. For the average person, it doesn't provide them with anything of value for the extra cost. Since it doesn't provide any extra value, the Xbox 360 looks like a much better deal.
ONLY $450!? Do they think we are stupid? The new slim is coming out soon, everyone should wait for that plus a price cut.
I am currently in the market for a 42in hdtv, and possible a console to go along with it.(i haven't really played anything other than my pc is quite a few years). The ps3 is insanely overpriced, if it goes to $299 i would consider it, but it doesn't have as many good games or as good of online features as the 360. Granted, online is free on PS3 but i would pay the $50 a year for xbox live.
Also, PS3 is the only console that is not getting netflix capabilities. lol.
Still overpriced methinks =/
Hell, my Xbox Elite was that price.
