3. Altec Lansing VS2221: Simple, But Good

Marching to the beat of their own drummer, Altec Lansing often offers original products - and that originality isn't based on exaggeration or technological gimmickry. The VS2221 is a very simple product that's nonetheless well worth a listen.

Altec Lansing has succeeded in creating their own strong visual identity, and they stick to it here. The VS2221 features a careful, restrained design, which is not always the case with moderately-priced products. In practice, this could be mistaken for much more expensive equipment - the satellites are elegant and the subwoofer is relatively small but quite heavy.

All In One

Unlike their competitors, whose kits often include multiple components, the 2221 only has two - one unit that includes the two satellites and all the connecting cables, and the subwoofer, which also contains the AC power supply. Naturally, some might find this approach a bit limiting - for example, you can't change the cable connecting to the PC - but it's undeniably a practical approach.
