US Airways Passenger's Xbox 360 Gets Gutted

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Flyer's Xbox 360 supposedly gets torn apart on way to destination.

Sometimes just bringing along your Nintendo DS or Sony PSP isn't enough. After all, you can't play Halo: ODST or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Sometimes you just need to bring the big console to satisfy your gaming needs.

One such dedicated gamer is Adam, who was flying out of Logan Airport with his Xbox 360 in his checked baggage. According to the story he told to the Consumerist, Adam checked with the airline agent to make sure it was acceptable inside his luggage.

Things didn't work out as expected, sadly, as Adam explains. "When I got home my I found that they had put a little ziploc bag on top of my things, and the bag was filled with tiny metal components that used to be in the XBOX. It's broken now and they're telling me tough luck," he wrote.

From the story, it's unclear who was responsible for the alleged dismantling of his Xbox 360 console, but Adam was advised to contact the US Airways Executive Customer Service at 877-369-6512.

[Update: Someone pointed out the very interesting idea of packing a starter gun inside your luggage to keep things secure and locked down.]

I flew with US Airways this past Tuesday and TSA felt the need to search my ski bag. Maybe they thought it could be missiles...

Seeing an Xbox is unusual. It had to be checked for explosives. Or the drug enforcement dog chewed it all up. Similiar happened to my brothers usps mail that had christmas candy. He got it back undeliverable, mangled. Definitely looked like a dog chewed it up.

Wow. They using monkeys these days?? Xbox 360 really isn't THAT hard to take apart. They should at least have ressumed responsibility and offered a gift card or something for destroying your property. Ooh god I would have been pissed.

What about suing the airline company?? After all, that's something they can't do. Destroying someone's console (or anything for that matter) isn't right.

Maybe he should create a video just like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo

i wonder if out of all the laptops, game consoles, and other electronics they confiscate or destroy, how many actual bombs or terrorist weapons do they find??

Couldn't they just have tested the Xbox if it worked? if there was concern for a bomb threat indeed, wouldn't a bomb squad personnel had to do the dismantling instead of some regular dude behind doors.

I don't know why they had to break his 360....usually you just give it time and they break theirselves :-)

And before the PS3 fanboy flames come, i own a 360 and love it... just had to say it though :-)

From what I have seen the bomb squad just uses a robot to look at it, no dismantle, and if they still think it is a danger they just blow the thing up anyway. So either way the "Dam Dirty Apes" aka authorities still seem to just end up destroying it anyway.

I flew recently and they very very rarely even touch your laptop/electronic... I mean you could always hide stuff in your laptop, like at the battery spot...

They did this to a cordless drill I had in my checked bags. I didn't realize it until I went to use the drill a month later and I noticed the reverse switch was broken and it had a little tsa sticker on it :(

Behind the scenes at the airport

Jim: I am telling ya, the xbox360 ain't that hard to mod. You just take out some screws and then pry in a couple of places and then you can do whatever you want.

John: I don't know. You could end up just destroying your xbox...

Jim: hey look here, someone has an xbox, let me show you just how easy it is...

-30 min later-

Jim: ok, so its not as easy as it looks. Oh well, at least we didn't find anything illegal in it hehehe...

I guess it's good that they are screening checked bags, but when they destroy something they should be held accountable.

Even better - didn't he *pay* them $50 for the "privilege" of checking a bag, which they then destroyed? Priceless.

I used to work for the post office, and the reason it got chewed up is because the candy bulges in the envelopes get them stuck in the machine. They probably had to shut down a auto-sorting machine to fix it afterward. Happens a lot.

As for the xbox... Would his warranty still be valid since someone else ripped it open? I can see that going either way.

You mean the warranty that gets voided the second you rip the console apart and break its guts? Yeah I'd say that is no longer valid.
