Sony Expands PS4 Remote Play to Xperia Z3
BERLIN – PlayStation Vita owners are already familiar with the unique pleasure of taking their PlayStation 4 games anywhere in the house, and those who purchase Sony's new line of Xperia Z3 phones and tablets will now learn just how they feel. The Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact will support PS4 remote play, letting players take their games seamlessly onto a small screen.
Sony announced the Z3's Remote Play functionality at an IFA 2014 press conference, and Tom's Guide went hands-on with the feature, which is just as simple as it sounds. Download an app onto a Z3 mobile device, set up Remote Play with your PS4, then play your game on either a big or small screen as you see fit as long as your two devices are on the same wireless network.

We played through a few minutes of Knack: a PS4 launch title that received decidedly mixed reviews. Although the game is just about as uneven as we remembered, the broadcast quality was nearly perfect. Even on Sony's crowded Wi-FI network, Knack's actions on the TV screen synced up with his actions on the phone with incredible fidelity, one or two microseconds of lag notwithstanding.
One thing to keep in mind is that Remote Play will encourage users to jump through at least one hoop: They may want to buy a control mount. This apparatus attaches a DualShock 4 controller to a Z3 device and keeps it stable while users hold it.
Sony has not yet announced a price for the mount, although as a relatively simple piece of equipment, it shouldn’t break the bank. Furthermore, users who already have other means of keeping their phones or tablets steady may not need one at all.
The Xperia Z3 line will launch in Autumn 2014, and even if the Remote Play does not launch alongside it, it will likely follow soon afterward. Remote Play is also available on Vita and PlayStation TV systems.
