Factory Workers at KYE Treated Like Prisoners

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

A recent report reveals the working conditions at a manufacturing plant used by Microsoft and other manufacturers.

A report released by the National Labor Committee (NLC) reveals the working conditions at a Chinese manufacturing plant (KYE) used by the likes of Microsoft (the primary user in this case), Hewlett Packard, Samsung, Foxconn, Acer, Logitech and Asus. Based on the evidence provided by the report, the environment is horrendous, and the workers are treated like prisoners, hired on as "work study students" as early as 16-years-old.

According to the report, the workers are forced to live on-site, and are not allowed to leave the facility except during special designated hours. "Fourteen workers share each primitive dorm room, sleeping on narrow double-level bunk beds," the report reads. "To "shower," workers fetch hot water in a small plastic bucket to take a sponge bath. Workers describe factory food as awful."

Security guards even sexually harass the young women.

The NLC claims that the shifts are frighteningly long, lasting from 7:45 a.m. to 10:55 p.m. All workers must pay for their food, leaving them making an average of $0.52 per hour. The typical workload consists of a frantic race to build a mandatory goal of 2,000 Microsoft mice per shift. "During the long summer months when factory temperatures routinely reach 86 degrees, workers are drenched in sweat," the report claims.

"We are like prisoners," one worker said. "We do not have a life. Only work."

Microsoft retaliated against the claims made in the report, and did so rather quickly. "We are aware of the NLC report and we have commenced an investigation," Microsoft said in a statement sent in to SeattlePI. "We take these claims seriously, and we will take appropriate remedial measures in regard to any findings of vendor misconduct."

The pictures from the source are out of context however, as these factories encourage tired employees to take naps.

Good god that's horrible, Someone ought to lay down the hammer of Justice on these Huge corporations.

I work for the Disney college program, and this wasn't to far from what it used to be like years ago from what i heard. College girls got raped all the time, in the Magic kingdom tunnels or by the bus drivers. We make no pay work tons of hours with a "Disney smile" in all types of weather. Not saying my life is worse, but it seems very similar. Disney expects so much and gives us nothing in return.

For them: it's either that or have no money therefore no food.
It's sad but what can we do? Fight poverty? Good luck with that.

No, all that can be done is use protective tariffs. It is only to the detriment of our own economy not to.

Sounds like army basic training. The crazy thing is that those workers choose to work there because it is their best option. It makes our work-related grievances seem rather insignificant.

When it comes down to it, the only real obstacle to eliminating poverty (and wars) is social norms. But I agree - that's a tough one to change, and takes a long time. But not impossible if everybody were to take part in the effort.

Welcome to the Free market! As in they are working almost for free. I'm sure this isn't the only factory with those kind of work environments. How else can Walmart sell $4 shirts and $300 pcs.

I hate when big corporations go like "OH MY GOD THEY ARE DOING EVIL? We SO didn't know about that! We'll take measures!" in cases like this. Microsoft (like any other company would do) refuses it knew anything about it but I just don't buy it.

Reminds me of the meat processing plants in the U.S. or the peon camps during Reconstruction.

I've visited a few factories in China when I was living there and seen plenty of documentaries from cell phone factories to Mardi Gras bead factories and it's all the same. Exactly as this Microsoft factory is. It makes no difference and the factory owners won't shut them down and China won't do anything about it since they want to maintain their competitive low cost exporting position. Btw, you would be amazed that the factory owners make Millions of dollars a year too and still won't pay even $1 higher in wages.

The reason these factories can pull this off is because they hunt for rural migrant workers (particularly women) who are uneducated and susceptible to bullying. These migrant workers are looking for extra money to send home to their families or to escape the even harsher realities of farm life and thus think that these factories are a god send at first, despite the horrible conditions and low wages. Also, there is no such thing as a minimum wage in China as far as I know so employers can get away with quite a lot.

This is what happens if you don't learn yourself in the educative arts. I know too well how these companies operate. I personally had to watch my mother make lacoste and polo clothing for days on end. Good thing were out if there.

This. Sure, it's terrible, but the workers really don't have a choice, and even then, if you shut down the factory, they're just screwed. It irritates me how people just call for shutting down the factory like that, without thinking of the consequences. More likely than not, life will end up being worse for the workers.

It seems that according to National Labor Committee, Microsoft has been outsourcing production to KYE Systems since 2003.

I'm sure many European and American workers will also associate with the monotony of working in similar roles.

Um. That is how business operates in China. All factories are live-in facilities where employees are deducted for food. Again, ALL factories.

The work hours seem a little long, as most Chinese factories only have a 12 hour work day. Sexual harassment isn't a norm, but the Chinese in general do not hold women in high social status. So it depends which country's definition of harassment is being used. What Americans consider harassment happens to waitresses at high end restaurants every night in Bejing.

There is a reason that China is such a major economic player. There is also a reason Communism is called Communism.

So you guys are saying that this happens to a comunism country that is encouraged by Capitalist Enterprises, that justify for you their behavior? whos system is encouraging what, the war low prices capitalist system or the just survive at any cost comunism? Both stinks if that is what we have come to... Ban Enterprises from operating outside if they not give their workers the same human conditions al least that are given in their origin country, once they Learn that have to behave outside good, they will bring better conditions and the best possible personal outside will try to get in a respectfully manufacturer company in there, second their competidors will do the same if we consumers only buy products to companies that Do care about treaten well personal, we should have a list with the top companies and their products that treat well their personal here and outside...

been there done that :
There is also a reason Communism is called Communism.

;) That's not Communism, dude! That's Capitalism ;)

I'm not going to explain you the difference here. I'd just like to say that this is a proof that Communism is impossible and that all revolutions are the same they replace one emperor with another. And all good ideas like Communism are just tools for some people to achieve their political goals. The same people forget rather quickly when they get the power and the money that they were supposed to fight for a better life for the masses.

That's what happened in China. They've replaced the Ming dynasty with new Emperors - the general secretaries of the Chinese Communist party. That's what has happened in USSR too. The same has happened in other non-communist societies.

Freedom is fragile thing and people with power and money will always try to suppress it. Isn't that what's happening in the last decade or longer in the USA?

Why don't they quit? It may have terrible working conditions but they're still willing to do it. It must be worth it to them.

In this case, the "unknown" would be : "exploit men, women and children.

It's sad. I would gladly play 5-10$ more for a mouse knowing that it's build in a safe factory and that the worker makes at least minimum wage (by our standarts).
