Early Adopters Report Problems With iPhone 4 LCD

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Hopefully it will go away on its own.

Early adopters know the risks of grabbing the first batch of a first generation device. There are the inevitable kinks of the initial design that are just waiting to be ironed out in subsequent refreshes.

The iPhone 4, while it is the fourth generation of the iPhone, uses completely new hardware. And the early adopters who have been playing with their iPhone 4 are finding some flaws in their "Retina Displays" and metal band antenna.

Specifically, some users are seeing yellow spots and bands on the screen, as can be seen in the image below.

Hopefully this problem is just temporary. As spotted by Engadget, a forum poster at AppleInsider wrote that this may just be a product of manufacturing the glass and that it should go away with time.

The yellow blotches will disappear

Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow "blotches" will disappear.

How do I know? I was involved in pitching Z-6011 to Apple.

Time will tell.

Early adopters? This isn't an early product. The first iPhone was, we usually wait for the fourth iteration for it to actually be ready...

I don't like how the first batch of hardware these days is 'early adopting'. I think we miss the point.

Right, the one's being sold are among the first batch of a fourth generation.

In any event, the number of complaints coming from early adopters seems to be quite a bit more than what we usually hear from the Apple fanbois. Apple is often late-to-the-party with cutting-edge technology and always overpriced, but their consumer electronic products have always very well-refined once they are released. If they are releasing a flawed flagship product, it could indicate that sales is putting unreasonable demands on manufacturing in an attempt to stay ahead of the Droid devices. If Apple's MO switches from being patient with product development to rushing the release of new products so as to not lose marketshare (i.e., like nearly every other tech company), then they risk damaging the reputation of their brand for consistently delivering a high quality product. Which, combined with the continued ineptitude of AT&T, poses a challenge given that Android OS is really coming into its own.

Now, users need to "finish" the manufacturing process for Apple. Next, users may need to do the assembly job for their iPhone, like the IKEA funitures.

LOL.

It's not a problem of generations or tech. If what that guy is saying is true, it's just rushed manufacturing, which has been a problem for the iPhone4 this whole time.
The antenna problem is also supposedly a problem with the signal meter, not the actual reception. This makes a bit more sense to me, as the human body usually works to boost signals, not weaken them.

There is a real issue here though, the utterly botched launch.
The system going down, the order mixups, now rushed products. Even though this was probably one of the most anticipated launches this year, there was absolutely ZERO quality control or preparation. Maybe next time Apple will test their products and prepare shipments before sending them out to people. Then again, probably not, even they seem to be thinking that their customer base is just moronic sheep that will buy whatever has an apple on it.

so to be clear, the TWO new things they added for this phone are both dodgy? and this from the company renowned for build quality?

I am no "apple fanboi" but i like my 3g-s for it's realiability (dropped in a river, and on the ground countless times.. it happens..) but this is just FAIL and makes me wonder how long the 4th generation will really last..

sounds like fun to me. that way you know whats in it and if theres a problem with part of the hardware you can replace it yourself. of course i would expect cheaper prices if you had to build it yourself, which im sure apple would not do

Now we can tease iphone4 users and accuse them of peeing on their phones or touching their phones after urinating and not washing their hands. yay

sounds like a case of "premature transportation before evaporation".

Red blotches would be more appropriate, since it's made by Foxconn

Also, except for the antenna issue, I've had zero issues with mine so far, and I got it early this morning. No yellowing, no nothing.

this is a true retina display, if you see yellow on it, you have a problem with your retinas

the yellow dot will be gone in a few day, but after a month, a rainbow color dubbed rainbow retina will reward each and every of the iphone4 user.

Now Apple will of course fix all these little stupid issues in silence, change production without a word, then never acknowledge there was a problem. Because they are apple, and apple makes magical stuff right? Its perfect in every way and cannot be flawed because its magical! Of course!!!

First iPhone with retina display; first iPhone with the A4 CPU; first iPhone with 512MB of RAM; first with iOS4 out of the box; first with Corning Gorilla Glass; first with antennas along the side; first with glass plates on both front and back... (etc)

The iPhone 4 boasts new hardware and a new design. People buying now are most definitely early adopters.
