TeraView Eliminates Nudey Airport Scanner Pics
A British company, TeraView, is pushing an alternative airport scanner that would eliminate the controversy surrounding photographs taken by the scanners currently being tested.
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding scanners like the one currently being tested in Manchester, England. The scanner makes a 3D black and white scan of volunteer passengers using low doses of radiation. The images can reveal objects concealed beneath their clothes including wallets, combs, pens, and anything else. The scan can also reveal the traveler's genitals.
Recent revisions in the 12-month test prohibit the scanning of anyone under the age of 18, protecting children and teenagers. Now a British company by the name of TeraView is attempting to preserve the modesty of adult travelers. The Register cites TeraView's claims that it is furthest along in the development of terahertz body scanners. Terahertz body scanners use light from upper end of the infra-red spectrum, with a wavelength between 0.1 and 1mm.
Rather than returning an image of the person traveling, the TeraView generates a 'fingerprint' or absorbance data that could be automatically analyzed to approve travelers or alert airport staff to investigate further.
These "fingerprints" can identify textiles, skin underneath, metals, and a varieties of explosives, including PETN, Semtex, TNT and RDX.
Aside from being less invasive, TeraView claims its scanner is more accurate too. "We detect with higher sensitivity and lower false alarm rate than with images," said Dr Don Arnone, TeraView's CEO. "The advantages outweigh the disadvantages and nobody we've spoken to has suggested they need images," he added.
According to the Register, the firm has held talks with the Home Office and Department of Transport, and sold testing kit to the US Navy.

What is the TSA going to do with all those new shiny porno machines they've ordered?
Wasted money. All of this.
Anybody can still bring down any plane by buying an airport employee. A false sense of security is not worth a cent.

So then all that means is that airport employees must be properly screened and scanned before they go onto planes as well? Like they do?
Problem solved :-D

Ship them to Las Vegas and start a new fetish lol

You just cant stop somebody who is determined and willing to die, dont make me quote Adolf Hitler, cause I will...
Why not just make the final step towards what the moron terrorists want?
Make a machine who will fry everyone who which to board a plane or boat or train!
In my point of view the terrorists have already won - common fear, huge expensives for security and total annoyance and suspicion for anyone everywhere anytime.
sic..
How about... no scanners!
In my opinion privacy and freedom are closely related, and I'd rather die than lose either of the first two.

I'd recommend the Americans look at the Constitution of the United States from time to time, not to forget how USA was founded and on what values it was founded.
Security can be improved against terrorists only by removing their motives to blow themselves up. If you have people with motive to blow themselves up, you'll see that they'll find a way to workaround the security measures put forward.
It's probably just a matter of time before an appropriate technology is fully developed. It probably will not satisfy everyone.
Doesnt this scanner violate the new anti-porn law in the UK and other countries?

Anyone can be bought for a price. A long-time employee could be notified that they are being fired after decades of service (just short of full pension possibly), someone happens to fall into deep depression or become suddenly mentally-unstable, a change in faith has that employee believing the country they live in is pure evil, an employee just lost someone close to them and sees no point in living anymore, etc.
Too many variables that we cannot control. If scanners are inevitable, then this is what I would rather see for peace of mind that someone isn't starring at you like you're on a B&W pornographic picture. Anytime humans are involved, there will be human error/malfunction to go along with it. We can try our best to keep the innocent ones safe, but the rest will always find a way......
Only guys with small penises would care anyways - get over it! I am certain that you'd rather have your body scanned at the airport than your carcass being scanned in order to identify you after a terrorist attack. People are so narrow minded but their perspective changes in a heartbeat when they're standing hand in hand with death...
So now everyone is making a big deal about their privacy being violated. BUT, just right after Sept 11, everyone was screaming we didn't do enough. Back then, people would even volunteer to go through airport security NAKED just to be safe. My my ....how we have forgotten! Human nature I guess.
You people are absolutely ridiculous. Look at what this scanner does; there is no image even show. All it does it identify is someone is carrying potentially dangerous materials. How exactly is that any kind of attack on your rights or privacy? Oh no, they're taking away your right to carry a bomb or a gun onto a plane. Oh...wait...
There is no liberty, NONE at all, being sacrificed here. The biggest sacrifice is a little bit of time waiting to get onto the plane. If you don't consider extra safety worth that, then, well, maybe they should have special "paranoid libertarian" flights that don't require passengers to go through scanners. The rest of us can have the extra security at no cost to ourselves.
And all of you saying that it's still possible to bring down a plane, you're absolutely right. No security is absolute. However, if making it more difficult on terrorists means that over the next decade, we have one or two incidents of terrorism, instead of a dozen, then those lives saved are more than worth it.
Get over yourselves.

the point being, that this technology is already obsolete. Rapports says, that muslims terrorist now put their dynamit up their a$$ and that can the current scanners NOT catch. Maybe you are willing to get a whole hand up between your cheeks just to be allowed entering a plane, but it is not my cup of tea..

Its really shouldn't be about human rights or liberties. I wouldn't care about any of the scans unless of course I had just taken a swim and there was "shrinkage".
Seriously though, the real question is is all this investment going to protect us from a similar attack? I saw a program that they brought some powder and tucked it in there underware and the technition for the 3d scanner didn't spot it. The representative for the company said that the technition of course isn't trained like the TSA and that the TSA guys/girls would easily know what to look for..... Who do you think trains the TSA? The technitions from the manufacturer are the one who train them... Duhhhhh.
Also, isn't it kinda weird that these guys jumped right in after the attack.
To be honest, it would probably be cheaper and more effective if they had special rooms were you strip down and they give you a quick check (we strip at the doctors office don't we?) and all luggage is sealed and everyone is given disposable clothing (or washable) like scrubs. That would be the most effective way. The only thing you would have to worried about then is a TSA employee assisted plot.
sorry.... not technition.... I meant technician.
Scanner 1 may give you cancer.
Scanner 2 may give you a tan.
... Wonder what scanner 3 will do.
"Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither"-Benjamin Franklin
Misquoted and misused. I'm not sure why you feel this impairs your ability to move and think freely. Well, they would stop you if you had a bomb. So yes, less liberty in that situation. Sounds good to me.
In the end, even if the TSA can guarantee 100% that no one brings a weapon on-board a plane then what?
So the terrorists will move to bombing trains, malls, buses or any other crowded area...
All we're doing is shifting the problem to another venue.
A few years down the road, after this scanner is released, we will see a story like this:
"TeraView scanners are source of increases in cancer in population."
and
"TeraView scanners are using 8x normal amount of radiation levels that are safe for everyday exposure."
Then finally:
"TeraView scanners, not cellular phones, are the cause of increase in brain cancer. No, really, we mean it this time"
In the end, even if the TSA can guarantee 100% that no one brings a weapon on-board a plane then what? So the terrorists will move to bombing trains, malls, buses or any other crowded area... All we're doing is shifting the problem to another venue.
That doesn't mean you stop fighting it. Evolve and stand up, please.
people need to grow the hell up. it is NOT a porno machine and creeps are NOT looking at it for pleasure! it is simply a safety device to help stop bombs, which help people NOT DIE. i would hate to see a few hundred (or thousand) people die just to save little Timmy from getting looked at for half a second by some guy he will never see again, EVER.
All you people, who say they have no issue or problems stepping through a scanner, get up against the wall for your new arm tattoos and a logo reminiscent of a twisted cross.
For those of you who are afraid of needles and ink, well little needles anyways, we have here under the skin implants that will tell us who you are and maybe if the technology goes correctly...will tell us what mood you're in and if you might commit a crime.
For those of you who don’t like that, we can give you a national ID card for those up close and personal searches.
All I can say for those who would say its ok for any government or individual to violate me or you physically, mentally, or electronically, no matter how innocuous or ambiguous it is, is nothing but a weak minded person who deserves what they get.
You're all running like scared little sheep, fearful of the muslim boogieman. Then you all have the audasity to sit there and take all this crap while the people who are responsible for this terror are running free doing whatever they like. They say this is a war of terror, its not its a war of religion--muslim against the rest of us and until someone has the guts to say this, we have already lost not only the war, but our freedoms WILL erode through time and our kids will pay for our ignorance and apathy.
You know what? This shit shouldn't even be published publicly. Seriously. This should all be secret. You wanna catch villains? You don't say ANYTHING about your techniques. This is so retarded it makes me wonder what your everyday joe schmoe thinks. Is everyone really that naive to think for one second they are safer because of this? If I tell you I am about to punch you in the face, with my right hand.. in 3,2,1... wouldn't you MOVE!?
All you people, who say they have no issue or problems stepping through a scanner, get up against the wall...
And I thought the folks in support of the War on Terror were good at fearmongering. You've got a leg up on that one. One idea would be to read less science fiction, or at least stop confusing it with reality.
If I tell you I am about to punch you in the face, with my right hand.. in 3,2,1... wouldn't you MOVE!?
You make a great point. Having the element of surprise is huge. But at the same time, deterrence can sometimes be more effective. We don't have a bunch of nukes so we can blow up the world. We have them so other idiots have less desire to use their own.
On a side note, there is probably a law that says you can't just go zapping people with X-Rays unless they consent. =P
Who is fearmongering? Im saying stand up for your rights man. Stop running around like a scared dog. I hate science fiction. These technologies are already here in one form or another. And dont tell me police dont already tag people with tattoos when caught for a crime.
Its people like you who say nothing is wrong and that what is happening is ok and we should all just live with the insane security decisions our government tweaks out. Im actually more afraid of apathetic people like you than the muslims. Its your attitude that will erode our freedoms.
Stop running around like a scared dog...Im actually more afraid of apathetic people like you than the muslims. Its your attitude that will erode our freedoms.
A little confusing as I don't think scared dogs are too apathetic. Regardless, the only thing I'll need more details on is which freedoms you think we have lost due to our defensive posture against terrorism. I really am an open-minded person, but only if the other party is bringing specific examples.
