Microsoft Perma-Banning Halo: Reach Pirates
Well, this is hardly surprising.
Over the weekend, Halo: Reach was stolen from the Xbox Live Martketplace and leaked online. Though the game isn't supposed to launch until the middle of next month, it can easily be found and downloaded via torrents. However, those planning to download the game to get a sneak peek at what Halo: Reach is all about should probably back off if they're a fan of playing games over XBL.
By Monday, Microsoft had yet to make a comment on the breach, other than to say it was investigating it. However, yesterday Stephen Toulouse, Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox Live, took to Twitter to address people's questions about playing the game. Bottom line? If you're playing a pirated copy of Halo: Reach, don't be surprised if you get smacked with the ban hammer.
Toulouse followed this up with reassurances that those playing legitimate copies wouldn't be banned, and warned users that the company "has ways of knowing" if you're playing an unauthorized copy.

It's a pirated game for Jtagged consoles. I'm sure the latter is going to get you a ban fast enough regardless the game. It's already considered an axiom among those with a Jtagged 360 that Live is off limits anyway. So, yeah... duh.
This is why I don't buy consoles any more.
So just play it disconnected, then uninstall before reconnecting online.
The media needs to start referring to this as the Halo: Breach (of security).
I got that beat....you can't ban me if I don't have a LIVE account....or and 360.....hahah.....I win!
Why would anyone think that can play a pirated game over a network owned, operated, and administered by the company they are pirating the game from, and expect to get away with it?
That would be like stealing a car off a dealers lot, then returning to that same dealer to get your oil changed.

I don't even need to come up with a good metaphor now. Thank you. +1
What!? Since when can you get banned for playing pirated versions of unreleased games!?
/Sarcasm
Good.
Good. The fools who pirated the game should have seen this coming a mile away.

yeah luckily us PC gamers never have to suffer because of a-hole game pirates. Now to play my legit copy of Assassins Creed II on the PC....ah crap server disconnect!!!

Yeah you win...*rolls eyes* Reminds of the joke about winning the Special Olympics...
So when a 360 is banned... I gather their value is almost none? I'd gather GameStop would check to see if the hardware itself is not banned, eh?

That's relative to what you really do with the console. Jtagged consoles aren't a 'pure piracy' mod, they're about unsigned code. With that kind of mod you can run whatever you want like a jail-broken iPhone. With that in mind you could fence it for a lot more through other channels than you ever could through Console-GameStop banned or otherwise.
This 'Reach' breach is specifically for Jtag mods, not your typical modded DVD-ROM drive. It's not like there's a Disc ISO floating around on torrents. You don't have to play an early release game online to get a Jtag mod banned, just leave it connected for a while with Xbox Live Silver. Playing any game before release, however, ups the risk of any mod.

I'm sure that Microsoft would/could never collect a list of previously played games in NVRAM or on the hard disk...
better wipe that 360 fully.
heh, if I jtag mine I wouldn't use it online anyway. banning players from live just does one of two things: sells another new console which they don't make much (if any) money off of and also makes it so players don't buy subscriptions and/or programs from xbox live itself. it is a lose lose situation for m$ in my opinion. this is just my opinion on it though.
but on the other hand, getting banned for a pirated version of a halo game that doesn't take a lot of brains..the game is not that important. it's a been there, done that sort of thing. we need someone to come out with something more interesting to play as an fps.
That is bad news. Not good news.
So I don't get it...how is this news? I thought it was obvious and regular procedure to ban users playing illegal copies of any game. Regardless if it is before or after release...
fda
Anyone dumb enough to think they could get away with playing a pirated copy of a 360 game before its release really deserves whatever punishment Microsoft deals out...
Just don'T go only with your p*r*t*d stuffs.
I have honestly not seen a game get pirated like this in 20 some years. Back in the days of the Atari ST and Amiga, games where leaked a month ahead of time. I remember Space Quest people playing it a month and a half before the ever hit the stores.
Hitler will be pissed.
Good to hear; burn the pirates down as they are ruining my gaming experience with over the top DRM.
Own 2 360s - one for online play with legit games, and a chipped model for offline play. Boom!

There are A LOT of STUIPID people in the world
Great post bigt ... classic.
rsg22, yeah that's the best way. Besides, anybody serious about pirating games is going to be savings thousands of dollars on software that they didn't purchase ($60 for each game). So, why not drop an additional $200 on an additional Xbox 360 ? Then, you get the best of both worlds. Of course, they'll still need legitimate copies of games that they want to play online.
honestly readign comments regarding pirating makes me sick.seems teh vast majority of users here at tom's . thinks that stealling shit is ok . glad none of your folks are my neighbors. what's so disgusting is the way you get so offensive in your remarks towards companies that are only trying to protect thier product. accoring to soem of teh logic i have seen here , most of you pirate defenders think there should be laws against law enforcers arresting poeple for breaking laws. meh ,why do i bother you degenerates are so inclined to believe thjat the world so how owes you every thing , i doubt any thign i have to say will make you see things in a more reasonable light. Just don';tgocrying to me when some other a-hole robs you.

True, there aren't that many I play online anyway - some really good games are single player only.
Hitler will be pissed.
Hitler only uses Google, nothing else.
