ViewSonic 7-inch Tablet Will Ship with Froyo

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

ViewSonic officially announced its 7-inch tablet, the ViewPad 7.

Previously we reported that ViewSonic would showcase two tablets at IFA 2010 in Berlin. One tablet offered a 10-inch screen and dual-boot support for (possibly) Windows 7 and Android 3.0. The tablet didn't have a name, however it would be Intel-based and slated for a market release of Q4 2010.

The second tablet, as reported last week, was called the ViewPad 7 and was completely Android-based. However Tuesday ViewSonic Europe made the tablet official, announcing that the 7-inch device would feature Android v2.2 (Froyo), front and back-facing cameras, 3G and phone functionality, and more.

"The ViewPad 7 is aimed at users who require the 'always on' connectivity they are used to from a mobile phone with a more agreeable screen size for longer term use," said Derek Wright, European Product Marketing Manager.

According to the company, the ViewPad 7 will feature a MicroSD slot for up to 32 GB of storage, a full-size SIM card slot, integrated Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi support, Assisted GPS, an accelerometer, and more. The device will also have access to Google's Android Market and come packed with an office document reader, an e-book reader, and a note-taking application.

Actual pricing and availability wasn't provided, however the company plans to send out review samples in early October. The eventual price is expected to be around $543 USD (£350). Stay tuned for more information regarding its eventual release next week during IFA 2010.

But 7" is such an awkward size for a tablet... My bets are still on the Notion Ink Adam.

A very nice toy, but a toy all the same; comes from trying to be all things, or, jack of all trades, master of none.

Too expensive. $200 and it'll sell like hot cake.

+1. Agreed. Even if it's $250 I'll take one.

Meh.. Internet auctions are full of under 100 USD Chinese Android laptops and tablets. (Without GSM and gps..) When you've got a smartphone it's just a gadget not worth carrying around. (sorry forgot I can't use the less then character. working on an edit.)

Is it just me or are all theses companies clinging to Apple's coat-tails with "____pad" nomenclature of tablet products.

If you're struggling with a name for your product ViewSonic, hand a few out as prizes here on Tom's and we'll generate catchy names for you.

Don't get the impression you're the only company doing this, there are plenty of others out there too.

If all these Android tablets are actually solid and available by the 2010 holiday season and HP doesn't have their WebOS tablet ready... bad news for them.

I agree with the pathetic nature of the names for these tablets. Everyone is jumping on the pad. I still do not see why Android OS didn't stick with the sci-fi naming scheme and call 2.2 "Froyo Baggins".

These tablets need some bigger screen resolutions. What's the point of having a 5" (hello dell streak) or 7" device with the same amount of pixels than a 4" or 3.7" phone...? you'll have to scroll around the same amount..

Full size SIM?
You mean one of those credit card sized ones? :D

Too big for a pocket, too small to replace a netbook. Both this ans the iPad have awkward sizes that turn me away form them.

Looks interesting. I hope these devices will live up to expectations, since I told my friend to hold off on the iPad for these competitors.

depends, its not an issue for me as i have nearly perfect vision however my dad i know was intrested in the streak with the 5 inch screen due to having a harder time focusing on such small txt on the sreen while yes he could zoom in on some stuff in home mode it doesnt help much .. not he did not end up going with the dell due it being in at&t so waiting for a larger devide on a different carrier
