Ubuntu 10.04 LTS DE Offers Music Store, More
Canonical is releasing a new version of Ubuntu OS Thursday.
Canonical said Tuesday that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition will be "generally" available on April 29. This new version of the popular Linux desktop distribution will come packed with three years of support, faster boot speed, direct access to an online music store, a sleek new look, and social network integration. The OS will be free to download Thursday, and all also be pre-installed on systems appearing this summer.
As for the increased boot speed, Canonical said that it's notably faster on any machine, but is naturally blazing fast when using SSDs. In the social network department, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition provides users with a "Me Menu" that consolidates the process of accessing and updating social networks. "The Me Menu also integrates chat channels so users can talk with friends or colleagues on Google Talk, MSN, IRC and nearly every network," the company said.
Canonical said that the Ubuntu One Music Store--which supposedly features "the world's largest labels and greatest bands available"--will be linked directly to the OS' music player. Users can purchase and then store the music in Ubunto One, a cloud-based solution that can share DRM-free music from one location across multiple computers and devices (2 GB for free, 50 GB for $10 per month).
In addition to the Desktop Edition, Canonical is also offering a Netbook Edition that utilizes the benefits of the Desktop Edition. Users will not only see faster boot speeds, but faster suspend/resume that will extend battery life and an "industry-leading" interface tailored for the small screen.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.1 and loving it!
50 GB of music per month!? Who needs that much!? Pay for one month and have music for life.
"Users can purchase and then store the music in Ubunto One"
Typo, should be Ubuntu One
So does that mean it can't be stored locally? If so you mine as well use a site like grooveshark...
To clarify, Ubuntu One is a complete cloud/backup solution. And can i say it works very well. It was introduced in 9.10 and 10.04 promotes its use. The music portion can simply be thought of as super simple Steam (content delivery system)for your drm free music.

That's $10 a month for 50 GB of cloud storage space, not 50 GB of music for $10.
Been thinking about moving my netbook over to Ubuntu ~wink~ . My desktop and my server has already made the jump.
Can't wait for some benchmarks against other major os for apps.
Let's say i'm linux-curious but still not ready to get out of the closet.
Ubuntu one music store and Ubuntu one are not the same thing. Ubuntu one is for general purpose storage, not music exclusively. You don't have to use it, you can store music locally.

Just backed up my Ubuntu 9.10 files and am looking forward to it. Been using Ubuntu as my main OS since 8.04. Since Ubuntu releases 2x a year I use that time to change my password too. I like a fresh install every time.
I always remove the lower task bar and have open applications show on the top task bar instead. Plenty of room for a half a dozen programs at the same time.
$10 a month for music that I have to stream? Hard drives are cheap, don't think that feature is going to be useful for anything but the netbook market.

phoronix will release comparative tests made on Linux and Windows 7 next week. I think it will be a great read.
I'm waiting to test the Sever Edition.
Had a look at the release candidate. It really does boot much faster than prior versions. Had to install it twice, though. GRUB 2 fuqdup.
You didn't even mention that this one supports iphones/ipads/ipod touche's out of the box !!!

That would be cool. While I do not own any of them I see Apple not liking this and maybe trying to stop it with a software hack, uh I mean update.
I don't hate Apple and currently own a MiniMac but Apple is way to much of a control freak. That is why I dropped Apple for my main OS in favour of Linux.

This guy gets a plus 1? For what? The last time I suggested Mac vs. PC benchmarks I got slaughtered with reasons why OS comparisons on a hardware site was ridiculous. Trust me, I know why. My point is, DO OPERATING SYSTEM BENCHMARKS TOM'S HARDWARE!!!

try saying Macintosh, people wont know what your talking about, any synonyms or slang of that company are forbidden on tomshardware, let's call it "the unwritten code of comments."

I don't necessarily want Toms to do the tests, I'd like to see them done on another site. Toms is about hardware.

It's not OS comparisons that are the issue, it's essentially a platform comparison. Legally, I can run Linux and Windows on the same machine, so making comparisons on the same hardware makes sense. I'm trying to find out which operating system will give my hardware better performance.
You can't legally do said test with OSX without getting your ass sued off by Apple. Which means you can't do an OS benchmark, you can only do a platform benchmark (since Apple claims to be a separate platform). Even if OSX was more efficient with it's hardware use, Windows and Linux will always win by brute force power at the same price points.

I'm pretty sure you can run Windows legally on a Mac (just not OSX on a non-Mac PC). So you can get a comparison of OS performance that way, though of course OSX would have things stacked in its favor in that scenario.
Sounds good, but why on earth does EVERYTHING has to have social network integration these days? There are still people out here who don't use social networks and don't need their toaster to automatically update their facebook profile with the details about the bread used at breakfast. So why on earth should an OS be integrated with it?

Its Web2.0 man... get the net.
So, does this release finally fix the AMD chipset issues? I have been unable to get Ubuntu to run since I ditched Intel/nVidia last year. :-(

Why would tomshardware ever want to review hardware
anyway, tomshardware needs to do a test with software available for both linux and windows and also do test on things like bootup speeds, memory usage and just abut everything else that they did on those vista vs 7 benchmarks
do a very detailed comparison and then users will be able to find the overall fastest OS.
The most common things pretty much all users want in a computer is for it to be faster, so which OS allows your hardware to provide you with the best application performance?
All of you that are so interested in a 3 way test should really check out Phoronix, since they'll be doing a stack up of Win 7, OSX, and Ubuntu 10.04 soon.
