PS3 Bug Blocks Users From Gaming On and Offline
Sony is investigating a bug that is preventing some PS3 owners from accessing the PlayStation Network and in some cases, playing certain games offline.
Kotaku reports that late Sunday night PS3 users started having trouble. Upon booting their consoles up, they were unable to sign into their accounts, check their trophies, use dynamic themes or access the PlayStation Network. However, it soon transpired that this was not just a connection problem; users were unable to play some games offline too.
Kotaku's Luke Plunkett writes:
"The screen above is what I was greeted with on a retail console when attempting to play Heavy Rain, and pressing out of it simply reboots the PS3, returning you to the main menu screen. It's the same story for other games that feature dynamic trophy support.
PSN games are no different; I tried to boot up "Flower", only to be greeted with a similar message about failed copyright protection, and it was right back to the XMB."
The issue is said to be only affecting older PS3s as opposed to the PS3 Slim, and some speculate it has something to do with a calendar bug. This, however, has yet to be confirmed.
Stay tuned for more on this.
UPDATE: Sony has said they believe it is a clock issue and that they hope to have it solved in the next 24 hours. The news lends weight to speculation that older PS3s, for some reason, might think it is a leap year and have trouble recognizing that it's March 1 as opposed to February 29. Zune owners faced a similar problem last year when New Year's Eve rolled around. The software on some Zune 30GB models contained a glitch that didn't account for the extra day in 2008, causing a massive meltdown. Things fixed themselves once clocks ticked past midnight on January 1. It's a nice theory but why the heck would older PS3s think 2010 is a leap year? We'll update when we hear more.

Perhaps this was a failed proactive attempt at closing some of the security holes in the PS3.
I had issues trying to play online during the day sunday, but was able to play that night on my brothers system. Both are the fatty versions.
so that's how they call DRM now? well...at least they didn't pull the Ubisoft crap and call it a feature. DRM should be removed like it's a stinky beetle
There is also a possibility that it was simply a bug.
If your warranty is already expired, you can always take apart your console and reset the internal clock. There are tutorials on how to do this all over youtube.
drm is a load of crap i can't wait till till the ps4 comes out and hopefully be then we can remove it ourselfs
The "bug" is caused by a faulty clock. The PS3 thinks it is a leap year (and hence February 29th) when in fact it is March 1st. The bug will be resolved in 24 hours.
this is why i don't buy consoles anymore... too much failure... remember n64? sega dreamcast? I had no issues with either. got an xbox... fried itself (e\/en though i kept it clean and the fan worked fine) and then hearing about rrod and wii firmware that bricks itself, and ps3 failures and all three riddled with drm. I'll stick to my pc games, where at least i can ha\/e a work around.

What do you do about the need steam and windows live accounts DRM stuff? I gave up pc games for that and don't buy that many ps3 games.
As an owner of a PS3 and not an owner of the XBOX360, I just gotta say, "I wished The Dark Knight wasn't ever released in Blu-Ray, so I would have gotten a XBOX360 instead."
I seriously bought a PS3 to watch The Dark Knight...

I've got to ask.. What makes you think there would be less DRM with a PS4? If anything, they'll have an even stricter DRM scheme around by then. I'm afraid DRM is only going to get worse, unfortunately.
Yeah, I got this same error code last night when I turned on my console. I have been busy playing Mass Effect 2 so haven't really used my PS3 much in the last month (aside from some Blu-Ray movies). So I thought I'd try out the God of War III and Heavy Rain demos, but instead I was greeted to the message: "Error. You Have Been Signed out of the PSN. Error Code: 8001050F" (or something similar to that).
I have not been able to try it at all today since I am at work, but I will try it when I get home to see if anything has changed.
I agree with rishwin though, sounds like a crappy clock with bad leap years.
I am affected by this currently. I imagine disabling autologin would enable offline play of the few problimatic games. Still gay tough, couldn't play mw2 last night.
Good to know. I had the exact issue, and was going to check the router to unblock PSN ports maybe. Thanks for the report.
waxdart most of that stuff can be gotten around with cracks *mainly single player games*. And you usually can play online via pirate servers. With that said steam isn't bad. I mean if there is gonna be a drm I can live with steam acting as it.
All I can say, as a Sony supporter for many years, is, "PLEASE GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER SONY!" It is getting increasingly difficult to defend my choice of ps3 over 360, with my fat getting the YLOD (I am on my second reflow), the lack of commitment Sony has to fixing this problem (the consensus is that it stems from a firmware update that set the fan set points to the same as in the slim, which, of course, is not the same), and now this. They are really dropping the ball and I feel like they don't even want to be in this market.
No games! Perish the thought! What will the kids do? Interact with real live human beings?
I never modded one of my console, and will not mod my ps3 if any mod/hack exist in future. But I really wish the clock bug will be exploitable and will be the start of ps3 modding/hacking. I'm sure some hacker are already looking at this possibility!
Oh forgot to mention, there is new post on PS3 Network status Twitter stating basically, wait till march 2nd 00:00:00 GMT...

btw, my fat ps3 is fine for some old reason. but i did buy my ps3 like 8 months before ps3 slim was released.
They are saying that it is related to a date bug that only affects older units, and not the slim. So this is not going to be fixed by a software update. Most likely it is a firmware issue, much like the bios on a pc, which is the culprit. They probably cannot fix this remotely.
Probably what happens is when the PS3 trys to since with the PSN the dates don't match and it causes it to try and sync the date to the correct date but it can't and errors out and resets itself back to the default earliest date of 2000.
I'm guessing it is a leapyear bug because it happened at the end of February and they are telling everyone to wait 48 hours until March 2nd to try it again. Probably won't even try to release a fix for it. I just think that if they really knew what caused it and thought they could actually fix it they would say they could do so in a time frame quicker than 48 hours considering every PS3 in the world is broken save for the slim which cannot possibly make up more than 15% of the customer base at this point.

I'm Sorry Dude but Consoles are far much more reliable and far less virus problematic than Pc's are. There are more Viruses spread and more Pc Crashes in a single day than there are in a Month with
Consoles, your remarks are retarted. Secondly a blogger says he's Sorry he bought a PS3 instead of
a Xbox360 because he wanted to watch " The Dark Knight " in Bluray. Well Sir you did the correct
thing, while the PS3 might have some small issues from time to time they are far more reliable than
any Crashbox360 and they make half the noise. There return rate is 1/20 of that of the Crashbox360 and because they produce much less heat they also last longer than a Crashbox360.
This is why I never update to the latest firmware. I wait.
hakesterman, you're an idiot. The only reason a PC would crash from a virus is due to user incompetence, such as surfing on shady porn websites, or downloading infected stuff off limewire. Learn to use a computer before you whine about them, please.
Although I would agree that the 360 is very unreliable, compared to the PS3 and Wii.
I seriously bought a PS3 to watch The Dark Knight...
Seriously? Were you not aware you can buy a standalone BD player for under $150 or a SATA BD-ROM for your PC for well under $100?
That is one expensive movie you watched there, bub.
I have two PS3 units, both fat. The big difference between the one that is not working and the one that works is that the one that is not working does backwards compatibility. My guess is that the DRM adds through the PSN firmware took effect on 3/1/10 00:00HRS GMT (that's 4PM 2/28/10 my time). If this is actually a DRM issue (and since all my PSN downloaded PS1 games all say that I don't own them, I would believe so), then only people with backward compatible machines, whether that be the hardware emulation or software emulation versions, would be affected by this so-called bug. Just calling out all fat PS3 users or all PS3 users in general while they get this corrected is their way of not causing any more panic or "Big Brother" conspiracies than they already have...

Yeah, but you are at the mercy of the company to help you- which usually costs money, and shipping.

I wanted a console and a blu-ray player. Assuming that I would get the cheapest xbox 360 (arcade), $199 xbox + $150 for the cheapest blu-ray player at the time is more than the deal I got from Deal that sold the PS3 for $299 with 2 controllers, Killzone 2, and a ps3 remote.
But the problem with the PS3 is that I do rather spend $50 more on a gaming console that actually does games... PS3's game selection sucks. I need multiplayer, and there's nobody I know with a PS3 that I could play online with!

Ah, well that makes better sense. The way you worded it earlier it sounded like you really only bought a PS3 for a single BD movie. And why do you need one of your friends in real life to play with? I've met countless interesting folks gaming online with the PS3. I will say having three other friends with one and having the same games is fun, but branch out man! I spend more time gaming online with strangers than with my real world friends (and that goes for PC gaming too).
And had you commented that the PS3 gaming selection sucked back in 2007 when I bought mine, I'd agree with you. But I don't see how anyone can say the PS3 game selection of today sucks. Not as good as the XBOX of course, but there are some fantastic games out there. The last one I bought, Uncharted 2 (proprietary to PS3), won Game Of The Year accolades from gaming sites, and I love it. You've got the console dude, now get out and enjoy it! And thank yourself you bought one now because they are hard to find at the moment.
haha... the first time my brother has texted me in years and his only concern was "don't turn in the ps3 due to a virus".
Any one tried to manually reset the date after March 1st! It worked for some ppl
