Science Project Causes Bomb Scare, Evacuation

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

When I was in school, teachers were always fabulous at freaking out about the smallest things. It seems times have not changed. A San Diego school was recently evacuated because of a student's science project.

Sign On San Diego reports that police were called to Millennial Tech Magnet Middle School in the Chollas View neighborhood because the Vice Principal saw an 11-year-old student showing his classmates a personal science project.

Maurice Luque, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said the school, which emphasizes technology skills, was evacuated as a precaution while a MAST robot took pictures of the device and the X-rays were evaluated. Luque said fire officials also went to the student's home and checked the garage to make sure items there were neither harmful nor explosive.

Two hours after the school's 440 students were evacuated, the device was determined to be harmless. Luque said there was nothing harmful in the student's garage and added that, while the boy and his parents were very cooperative, they were shaken by the whole situation.

The project was intended to be a type of motion-detector device.

According Sign On San Diego, the student will not be prosecuted, but authorities recommended that he and his parents get counseling. The student violated school policies, but there was no criminal intent, Luque said.

When I was a kid it was very common for my brother to cook up high explosives and it was just passed off as "boys being boys." It is sad that part of American life has been completely destroyed by fear.

If the device was harmless then lots of people need to apologize to the student and his family.

There are some things I don't understand though- did the device look dangerous? Did someone ask the student what was in it and what it did? Is the Vice Principal an idiot? Is the Vice Principal looking for a new job?

In other news: An 11-year-old was jailed for showing off his custom mini-itx backpack computer by the NSA under the impression that he might have been involved with the Iranian Cyber Army...

This is stupid. Gatorade bottle and wires? Really?!?!

Click on the link and read the original news article.

It seems that the Principal of the Tech School knows so little that he couldn't tell that the electronic device was harmless. The whole thing was blown out of proportion.

The family ought to sue the school for having an idiot for a principal.

I think the authorities need counseling. Tell people they need mental assistance when they did nothing wrong is, well, wrong.

"The student violated school policies, but there was no criminal intent, Luque said."

What school policies? Bringing in and showing the science project you made for school is not allowed?

Why didn't they ask him what it was supposed to be before starting this stupid riot? If they had and he would have told them it's a motion sensor, there would have been no reason for them to think it could explode.

When I was in elementary school we had to bring wires and batteries for science class as a requirement and no one called in the bomb squad for that (though to be fair, if a student were to leave this unattended in the yard or something, they might have).

Counseling? Its a technology school and they think he needs counseling for taking the initiative to experiment in technical projects? They should be praising his initiative.

This world is going to hell fast.

"project was made of an empty half-liter Gatorade bottle with some wires and other electrical components attached. There was no substance inside."

Wasn't the Vice Principal/teacher supposed to talk to the student to see what it is first?

unless they had enough to believe the student was lying, they have set up a very bad example to treat every student as a potenial criminal...

This is a very sad news.... fail of our education system... >_

I hope to GOD that Good Morning America picks up on this and does an entire segment on this story.

If they do, it'll embarrass the entire school district for being so stupid and for having mistreated both the student and his family.

I hope they receive that counseling soon....

Fuck you. Kids should be able to express their creativity and ingenuity without facing shit like this. I swear, before we know it people will get counseling for being normal and become paranoid about living normal lives. Counseling has it's place, but is not the solution to all problems, People.

HAHAHAHA!, But this isn't written very well. No description of the device, or an explanation of why the VP would think it was something harmful. Also it said that they talked to the kid then decided to evac the school. So what the heck did they say and all!?

They should sue. Kid brings technology into a tech school, big surprise.
They were harassed in my opinion (police tell me they want to check my place though I was doing nothing wrong, I tell them to shove their fists up their anus'), and someone needs a good kick in the balls from this.

So why exactly did they recommend counseling for the student and his family?
I think the idiot principle (at a tech school no less) is jealous that the 11yo students are smarter than him/her.

America is seriously turning (more) into a police state when an empty Gatorade bottle with a few wires attached prompts police raids and investigations :pfff:

I have searched on this story, with zero results of photos of the project. Does anyone own a camera these days? I would think that some news organization by now would be showing photos and videos of this event. "School Exavcuated" "Fire Department x-ray the device", "search student's home" ... It is like big news, with zero coverage.

It seems to me that if the public ever saw the photos of the device, the school officials and fire department would laughed out of town.

It would be great to see a follow up to this story with photos and video.
