Windows Phone 7 "Mango" Done, Says Microsoft

- By - Source : TechCrunch

It's now up to the manufacturers to distribute Microsoft's "Mango" update for Windows Phone 7.

Peter Wissinger, Microsoft’s director of Mobile Business in the Nordic countries, reportedly released an official update on Friday in regards to the status of Mango, the massive update for Windows Phone 7. According to Wissinger, the update was actually completed earlier than planned, and is now up to the phone manufacturers to distribute accordingly.

“Now it’s up to our manufacturing partners to release Mango to our customers," reads the translation. "Microsoft has delivered complete Mango earlier than planned to the manufacturers. Feels good now.”

According to the official Windows Phone Blog, the Windows Phone development team actually signed off on the release to manufacturing (RTM) build of Mango back on July 26.

"This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations," said Microsoft’s Terry Myerson. "Here on the Windows Phone team, we now turn to preparing for the update process. The Mango update for current Windows Phone handsets will be ready this fall, and of course will come pre-installed on new Windows Phones."

Microsoft’s list of hardware partners includes HTC, LG, Samsung, Dell, Acer, Fujitsu, Nokia and ZTE Corporation. Currently it's unknown when these manufacturers will release new handsets including the new Mango update although Fujitsu will reportedly release something in September.

It's also unknown when manufacturers will actually push the update on the current crop of eight devices. Right now speculation points to a time period sometime around the launch of Apple's iPhone 5 which is rumored to take place in early October. Google's Ice Cream Sandwich build of Android is also expected to arrive in that timeframe.

Mangos are quite delicious. Therefore, a phone named after a delicious fruit should be delicious as well. However, if I have stomach problems as a result of eating it, I will sue.

I hope MS realize that a PDA is still a phone.

WinMO 6.5 is a great PDA but it is NOT a phone. The phone feature is soo difficult to use (Contacts, Vioce Dial, Answering Call, Making calls etc). And 90% of the time I am using it as a phone rather than browsing the web or reading emails.

Let's hope Microsoft opened up more APIs for 3rd party developers to use (ex: Bluetooth). Previous versions of Windows Phone were skimpy in some areas.

win7phone_fandyke :
I'm assuming this is a massive update of bug fixes, since the "awesome new features" aren't being talked about much.7phone will fail because people are over Microsoft. I had to downgrade my Windows 7 to 32bit so that my high-performance apps would work right. Now, this limits my 8gb of RAM to 4gb of ram, even though legendary 32 bit OS's such as:Every Linux/UNIX known to manWindows Server 2000 32 bit datacenter edition(and other 32 bit Win Servers)can support way more than 8gb using real PAE(not XP/Vista/7 crappy fake PAE). However, Microsoft, being too inept to make a proper and fully cross-compatible 64 bit OS, and too greedy to let me use my own hardware to it's fullest exent without their permission, has alienated power users from all of their products, and created apathy with the non-power users.I should also mention, that as far back as I can remember, Linux has had perfect 32/64bit cross compatibility, I've never seen ill behaviour out of the 64 bit version./end anti-M$ rant

Just want to know, what are those "high performance apps" that you were referring to? Why don't you take it to your apps developers for their poorly optimized software / codes instead?

Frankly, most people who run Windows 7 64-bit have never encountered any performance loss issues and most likely never will.

When I saw the pic from the link, I thought it was a real bulky phone, turns out, it isn't. :)

They did. There's a lot of good stuff for developers.

I'm excited. Thought of picking up a used Surround 7 on Craigs for $120 but we'll see how the Japanese implementation of Mango goes. If the text is terrible, then a no go :(

WP7 is pretty good. Microsoft are stepping up their game and they have produced a pretty decent OS. It wouldn't surprise me if we see WP7 tablets soon

That is the American way! Maybe part of the problem.
