Ustream App Turns iPhone into Wireless Cam

An app allows iPhone 3G, 3Gs owners to upload live video feeds to the Internet.

TUAW reports that iPhone owners no longer need to jailbreak their devices to stream live video, as today Ustream (read: you stream) has launched a free app that legally provides streaming services. Now iPhone 3G and 3GS owners can shoot live video, whether they're at Disney World or sitting on the toilet, and stream the feed directly to the Internet for all to see and behold.

Called the Ustream Live Broadcaster, the app allows viewers to watch the footage as it is recorded... just imagine a live newscast from your local TV station. iPhone consumers can also choose to archive the stream as well so that spectators can watch the feed again at a later time. Other features include Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube functions (naturally), yes/no polling, chatting, and location identification provided by the device's GPS.

However don't expect high-quality content: the app records video at 320 x 240 pixels, and can even be lowered to a meager 176 x 144 pixels. Still, the entire application--from the service to the actual app--is free: inspiring directors of photography merely need to create an Ustream account and download the app.

The release of Ustream's Live Broadcaster comes at the heels of AT&T revealing that it plans to clamp down on smartphone data usage. While it's great that the free service lets iPhone owners become a portable TV station, AT&T may eventually pull the plug on the programming. We're also waiting for someone to film some live, home-made porn that will bring the whole Ustream service down in flames.

This just in: AT&T's network becomes slower than thought possible with new live video streaming. The obvious solution for AT&T is to stop people using the service they pay for and any apps that may utilize that service; and not use any of their profits to upgrade their network. I am glad I am not with AT&T, I am sure this will cause some problems.

I could already do this with my Nokia 5800 XM.

I am an AT&T customer, love it, but I agree with what you are saying regarding slowing down data over airspace, it's going to get ridiculous. And god help me if I get a dropped call or something if some idiot decided to record his ass in the bathroom.
