Apple ''Confident'' AT&T Can Fix Network Issues

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Apple still has confidence in AT&T.

A lot of AT&T customers have problems with the network and it seems iPhone owners are the ones who complain the loudest. They seem to have completely lost faith in the iPhone. With AT&T's exclusivity contract nearly expired, everyone almost expects Apple to move along and offer another carrier the chance to step up to the plate. But is Apple thinking the same thing?

Responding to a question about the benefits of a exclusivity agreement with AT&T, Apple CTO, Tim Cook, told Piper Jaffray Senior Analyst Gene Munster that the company is confident AT&T can fix the issues it's experiencing.

"AT&T has acknowledged having some issues in certain cities, and they have detailed plans for addressing these. We have personally reviewed these and have very high confidence that they will make progress in fixing them," Cook said, according to ChannelWeb.

Cook went on to suggest that criticisms of AT&T's 3G coverage should be weighed against the size of its global subscriber base. "It's important to remember that [AT&T has] more mobile broadband users than any other carrier in the world. In the vast majority of locations, we think iPhone customers are having a great experience," Cook said.

Do you think Apple is right to trust AT&T or do you think the company should end exclusivity contracts and just offer the device to any network that wants it?

They say this, but Steve Jobs will still do whats best for Apple... Loyalty=nonexistant.

HAHAHA That's why AT&T lost its exclusivity on the iPhone. When the iPhone comes to Verizon AT&T will lose 1/2 of its iPhone customers. Steve Job knows he blew it going to AT&T only. If he had released the iPhone to every carrier? Even I'd be using one probably.

They'd have to be confident or they'd look like Google now; like they had no idea what they were doing.

Apple must talk to different iphone users than I do.

We all saw the recent article about AT&T's network being $5BILLION behind Verizon's. I seriously doubt that AT&T will get everything fixed quickly. They want to roll out 4G, and I'd be willing to bet that they would rather spend money on 4G than fix 3G. They are already going to be about 6mos or so behind Verizon when they roll out LTE and are already a couple years behind Sprint. Blowing their money to fix 3G now would be a bad move in my book. They should swallow their pride, fire Luke Wilson, crawl back into their hole, and wait until they have a decent, reliable service that they can actually be proud of.

Thanks for Beta testing the iPhone AT&T users, it only took 3 hardware revisions!

Actually it would probably only improve the experience because people would spread the usage to different networks. Verizon or T-mobile will have network problems and AT&Ts problems will be reduced because they have fewer high bandwidth users. AT&T gets the brunt of customer dissatisfaction because they have chosen to have horrible customer service policies. That being said, I don't know of anyone that has a love affair with any of the US wireless companies. I doubt the experience will be better on a different network. The grass is always greener...

In the USA, AT&T is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone. AT&T wireless phone service doesn't exist outside of the USA. Maybe you've forgotten, but Apple offered the iPhone to Verizon first. Verizon rejected it. As a result, all iPhones are GSM/HSPA phones and do not contain a 2G CDMA radio.

Gotta love Corporate Talk.
Apple is "Confident AT&T can fix network issues" translates to :
"Apple knows AT&T's 3G network is currently worthless and warns them to kindly fix it soon if they value their exclusivity deal."

Anybody who's worked in a corporate environment knows what it means when a manager is "confident" you can resolve an issue.

In NYC at least, iphone service has been getting worse, not better. So yea, absolutely no faith ATT can fix things.

How exactly is apple delusional? They have proprietary computers, but, they control the whole thing and I believe that is why they simply work better than a Windows machine with parts from all over the world and drivers made by a dozen different companies. As for the iPhone, they absolutely sell it from multiple wireless providers, that opens the door to more customers.

If I didn't have a family plan on Verizon I'd be on Sprint. They roam on Verizon's network anyways.

ATT's problems go way beyond their network, but then they intend to make money, lots of money, so they have to do just enough work on their network and just enough advertising to keep the gravy train going. Verizon is certainly not without fault, as evidenced by their big increases in termination fees. I dare say none of the carriers are really great to their customers because they all want to make money.

Will an iphone even work on verizon's network? I thought they used a different type of network. Otherwise you could buy a used iphone and hack it.

look guys, there are a few facts here...

1-AT&T's network is bad; I live in NYC, and my phone rings 1/2 time I get a call and I miss 1/3 of my text messages. The phone switches between Edge and 3G all day.
2-AT&T MIGHT (MIGHT MIGHT MIGHT) lose exclusive rights to the iPhone, but Verizon won't see the iPhone any time soon. There is currently no iPhone that has a CDMA radio, no where in the world, and there isn't a hidden CDMA version as it would be registered in the FCC database.

Apple Almighty believing that if it says it's so it will be so.

Great sign of delusional behavior for sure.

I have no problems with my iphone in the Sacramento area, maybe I am just one of the lucky ones that live in an area where service is good, but even when I travel to other places such as SF, Pheonix, LA, Miami its fine there as well . To be honost, all mobile carriers are ripping us off.

I guess that means its coming to T-Mobile? Um... yay?!? I'll stick with Android thanks.

The problem with Verizon and CMDA is the lack of a SIM card. My boss broke his Verizon phone, and had to carry his wifes phone around all day, and kept getting her calls, cause it was her number. I can take my sim card and stick it in any phone and bam, my number. Works especially well if I ever break my phone (hope that doesn't happen), or go somewhere I can't take a camera phone (much more often).

With GSM, iPhone owners can remove their SIM card and put it in a real phone when they need to make a call, then move it back into the iPhone when they need to look like a pretentious, know-nothing prick.

What no one has mentioned is that Verizon is CDMA technology and AT&T is GSM; 80% of the global mobile market uses the GSM standard(check it on Wikipedia)... Therefore you build a phone that you can sell in as many places as possible and has as much coverage as possible. Verizon is US only, unless you use one of their CDMA/GSM phones which look like a waffle iron... I have an iPhone, I HATE AT&T, but I also realize the realities of selling a product world wide, The US is not the only market people focus on...

I love the ignorant flaming posts. I also love hearing the intelligent posts that add info to the discussion.
For those that live in NY, I feel for you, as that area is known to have issues due to the unbalanced number of users per tower.
I am satisfied with the service (I wish it was less expensive for the data plan though), I was even able to get two activation fees waived because "I didn't know I was going to be charged activation and this confuses me", which was $70 total. As far as network speed I average 140 KB/s down, 40 KB/s up, which is actually on par with my dsl I have now (except the ping is huge using 3G). I live in the Dayton area FYI. If you have numbers, (AT&T, Verizon, etc) I think more people would love to hear them than the QQing.

really? i guess those rumors that apple might make a CDMA version of the iphone so Verizon can carry it are not true then

I, personally, have no issues with the ATT network and my iPhone. I cannot speak for everyone though. I do not live in a major city where most of the issues seems to arise. Also, my iPhone is on a Wi-Fi network 95% of the time. But for the passed year I have had only 1 dropped call, and that was because I was WAY out in no-mans land. My overall experience has been good though.

I will say that if the iPhone ever comes to Verizon, I will hop on that bandwagon, for the fact that all my family and friends use Verizon. (unlimited mobile to mobile)

Apple's yesterday earning report shows the iphone sales were down. The stock will go down hill next quarter earning if Apple still only offers through AT&T.
