I thought I'd found a run-of-the-mill quirky rom-com streaming free on Tubi. Then the ending flipped everything inside out
Thomas Middleditch stuns in the emotionally satisfying 'Entanglement'
If you like your romances a little unstable, "Entanglement" is a hidden gem that's well worth your time. This 2017 Canadian indie features Thomas Middleditch — best known as the anxious coder from "Silicon Valley" — in a rare lead role. It is a creative stretch that completely works for him, anchoring a film that balances quirky charm with genuine emotional weight.
The story follows Ben Layten (Middleditch), who is newly divorced and at his lowest when he learns a stunning family secret: His parents once adopted a baby girl, only to give her back the day they found out his mother was pregnant with him. Convinced this almost-sister is the missing puzzle piece that will finally fix his life, he tracks her down. Instead of finding a sibling, he falls for her, and that's when things go beautifully sideways.
If that premise has you intrigued, the central performances will fully hook you. Middleditch and co-star Jess Weixler share a magnetic, crackling chemistry that keeps the narrative grounded even as the plot twists. Running a tight 85 minutes, it is the perfect feature to toss on for movie night tonight, and you can stream it free on Tubi right now.
What is 'Entanglement' about?
Ben Layten just had a very bad year. His wife left him, he has no job, and after a failed suicide attempt, he fills his days mapping his existence on his wall, trying to pin down the exact point where everything went wrong. The one consistent positive in his life is his neighbor, Tabby Song (Diana Bang), who is hopelessly in love with him.
Everything changes when Ben's father is rushed to the hospital and lets slip that long-hidden secret. Years earlier, on the very day his parents found out they were expecting Ben, they had just brought home an adopted baby girl — and the agency made them give her back. Realizing he almost had a sister, Ben decides she is the key to making his life add up, and he goes looking for her. The trail leads to Hanna Weathers (Jess Weixler), a sharp, impulsive woman he had actually crossed paths with at a pharmacy just days earlier.
Ben and Hanna fall for each other fast, turning the almost-sister discovery into exactly the kind of mess his therapist and Tabby kept warning him about. Hanna has her own theory about their connection: that they are bound together the way entangled particles are, tied no matter the physical distance between them. But what will really happen if they stay together? Will Ben finally figure out what is missing from his life?
Why I recommend streaming 'Entanglement'
Many of us have talked ourselves into the idea that one missing piece — the right person, the right job, or the perfect answer — would finally make everything click. That is Ben's whole struggle in "Entanglement," and watching him try to figure it all out is utterly entrancing. He's a guy at the absolute bottom, convinced the fix for his life is out there and findable. The movie takes this psychological craving seriously, which feels incredibly refreshing.

Director Jason James brings Ben's fragile mental state to life through subtle magical realism. Ben and Hanna wander past animated deer in a park; they break into a pool and end up swimming alongside glowing, animated jellyfish as they fall for each other. Through it all, Middleditch brilliantly underplays his performance. He's dry, low and vulnerable, while the world around him goes bright and strange.
Weixler is equally fantastic as Hanna. She plays her as impulsive and a little unreal, which is precisely the reason you buy into the story's dreamlike logic. It becomes abundantly clear that she and Ben are bound together like entangled particles, no matter how far apart they drift. Then, the last twenty minutes turn that entire concept inside out. I won't spoil how, but it is a payoff well worth finding out for yourself.
"Entanglement" is an odd, lovely little charmer that wraps up in 85 minutes but lingers much longer. It's a journey worth investing in, so if you're looking for an intriguing flick to stream tonight, give this one a look.
