6. Whitecap

Updated August 2002

This proprietary standard was developed by Sharewave (now part of Cirrus Logic) and is aimed at supporting multimedia applications by providing QoS (Quality of Service) features. There are two versions of the standard, Whitecap, which is not compatible with any other 802.11 standard, and Whitecap2, which features 802.11b interoperability.

The only companies who hopped on the Whitecap bandwagon were Panasonic and Netgear, and as of early 2002, there are no Whitecap2 based products.

Recommendation: Deader than a doornail. R.I.P.
