8. Benchmarks: Whitebook Performance

To wind up, we thought we'd benchmark the Centrino system we assembled against a pre-assembled notebook. We drew on the performance results in Asus M2N and Averatec 5110HX .

Both devices resemble the MB02 Centrino notebook but have slower CPUs (1.6 and 1.3 GHz). To compensate, the Asus device has a faster hard drive (5,400 rpm). At 15", the display on the Averatec 5110HX is slightly larger than those of the other candidates (14.1"). In terms of battery capacity, the Asus M2N (68 Wh) has a slight lead on the 5110HX (65 Wh) but a clear advantage over FIC's MB02. Its battery produces just 53 Wh.

An old PC truism has it that a fast processor in no way means a fast PC. The rule naturally applies to the MB02, too. Because of its slow hard drive it concedes defeat to the nominally slower Asus M2N (with its slower CPU but faster hard drive). Even so, the mobile PC from FIC delivers high system performance.
