2. iBuypower Gamer Mage 855

IBuypower chose to build this particular system around an MSI K9A2 crossfire motherboard with an AMD Phenom 9600 quad-core processor.

We don’t know if we’d choose a Phenom for a dedicated gaming machine as its 2.3-GHz clock speed is somewhat low and the Phenom’s TLB erratum BIOS fix will disable the L3 cache. Both of these negatives might have a negative impact on gaming performance somewhat compared to, say, an Athlon X2 6000+. However, the Phenom quad-core is a good choice for a dual-purpose gaming machine that might also see a lot of use with multithreaded apps, such as with media encoding.

IBuypower chose to cool the Gamer Mage 855 with a large aftermarket air cooler. We’ve heard of Phenom’s running hot with the stock cooler so this is certainly a welcome addition.

The graphics card they chose to include in the Gamer Mage 855 is AMD’s Radeon 3870 X2. With two RV670 graphics processors onboard, the X2 is no slouch when it comes to gaming. The 3870 X2 might be a little overkill for the included 20.1” monitor as it really wakes up at resolutions over the monitor’s maximum 1680x1050 native specification.

Four gigabytes for RAM might be a bit of a waste since 32-bit Vista only seems to recognize gains up to 3 GB, but it doesn’t cost much more and certainly doesn’t hurt anything; having an even number of RAM sticks may allow the board to run the memory in dual-channel mode, thus increasing performance by a smidgeon.

The hard drive is a standard issue 500-GB Western Digital unit, with a good amount of space for most users. Other than that, the rest of the guts of the system are fairly standard: there are two optical drives (one DVD-ROM and one DVD-RAM), a multi-card reader and a Solytech 585-watt power supply. All of these components are fit within an attractive Thermaltake Armor+ MX aluminum gaming case. It’s important to note the Armor+ MX isn’t widely available yet and iBuypower let us know that the Gamer Mage 855 probably won’t be available to purchase until it is.

It looks like the iBuypower Gamer Mage 855 will be a very interesting system to put through the paces. Let’s see if we can find a suitable opponent to pit it against.

Check out this test at behardware:

1 core: 3.5 fps
2 cores: 6.6
3 cores: 12.9
4 cores: 13.1
The third core still doubled the FPS!
What are you talking about? To me it's pretty clear that the Dell outperformed the iBuyPower rig and in some cases by a far margin. Even at higher resultions where the ATI card is supposed the shine it's not like it beat down the Dell. One thing to keep in mind is that those who are looking for a low end gaming rig are not going to have 24"+ sized monitors to run the high resolutions that it would take to get performance better than the dell. Plus, the dell is cheaper.
I kind of think the conclusion here was really taking it easy on iBuyPower. Honestly they're going to have to work harder to come up with something that is truely competitve in the market.
