Display Contrast
7. Display Contrast
As the table below shows the Fujitsu and the Lenovo displays have very high (mean) contrast ratios. They also show very wide contrast ratio ranges. By contrast while the Gateway and HP displays have lower (mean) contrast ratios, they also exhibit much smaller ranges.
| Mean Contrast Ratio | Minimum Contrast Ratio | Maximum Contrast Ratio | Range of Contrast Ratio Measures | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fujitsu E8210 | 496 | 253 | 615 | 362 |
| Gateway E-100M | 139 | 115 | 159 | 44 |
| HP nx7400 | 112 | 90 | 145 | 55 |
| Lenovo T60 | 440 | 302 | 588 | 286 |
As you might expect and as the charts below confirm, the Fujitsu display (range 362) has the least uniform contrast of the four notebooks. Next is the Lenovo display (range 286), which shows an unusual uneven drop in contrast toward the right side with a rise in contrast near the middle near left side. The drop in contrast at the top and bottom of the Lenovo display is normal for displays with large contrast ratio ranges. Though they exhibit lower (mean) contrast ratios, the Gateway and the HP show flatter contrast ratio distributions across their displays.
For the record, we could only see the results of less uniform contrast ratio distribution on the Fujitsu and Lenovo screens when they displayed one or at most a few very light or very dark colors.
