PC Vendors Hesitant Over Optical Drive Market

International PC vendors, including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Sony and Taiwan-based Acer and Asustek Computer, have had Blu-ray Disc (BD) or HD DVD optical disc drives on their roadmaps to launch in 2008 but are faced with a dilemma between the large market potential and the uncertainty as to which format to adopt, according to industry sources in Taiwan. Toshiba’s striking success in promoting sales of its HD-A2 HD DVD player in the North American market at US$99 has encouraged PC vendors towards the global prospects for a take-off of PC-use blue-laser optical drives in 2008, the sources pointed out.
