Soon Mac Users Can Sync Windows Phones Too

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Mac users will be able to sync their Windows Phone 7 device to their computers sometime in the next three months.

With all the Windows Phone 7 excitement, you may not know that Mac users can't actually sync their Windows Phone 7 device unless they've got a PC in the house too. When Microsoft announced that it would be using Zune as the syncing software for the phone, it stated numerous times that the Zune software would be compatible with Windows PCs but failed to mention Macs at all.

Yesterday a Microsoft UK employee tweeted that Mac support is on the way, but the message was quickly removed from the microblogging service. Late last night the Redmond, Washington-based company confirmed that yes, Mac support is coming at the end of the year.

"Later in 2010 Microsoft will make a public beta available of a tool that allows Windows Phone 7 to sync select content with Mac computers," CNet cites Microsoft as saying in a statement.

The company didn't provide much in the way of details but we'll be sure to update you when we know more.

I hope they don't pull the same stuff they did with Windows XP. To sync with a zune back then, you had to have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and only that (MCE 2003 wouldn't work, Home Edition wouldn't work, Professional Edition wouldn't work.)

I'd be angry if I saw "Sorry, you need Windows 7 Ultimate to install this software."

Like anyone who bought into a computer from the cult of jobs would buy a Windows phone.

It would be better if Microsoft simply pretended that the very small amount of Mac users out there didn't exist. There's nothing that makes a Mac worth the overpriced amount listed on its price tag.

I suppose it's fair, seeing as Apple let's iPhone owners sync on a PC, now MS is letting WP7 owners sync on a Mac.

Relative market share is not the issue, the fact they are playing nicely together makes a refreshing change.

Good news, let's hope this widens the appeal of WP7.

Will this give a fully supported Zune software release or a watered down version for solely WP7 syncing? It sounds more like the later to me which is a major let down. I love the Zune software. iTunes is beyond terrible.
