No WebOS 2.0 for Old Pre, Pixi and Plus Devices

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

WebOS early adopters won't see WebOS 2.0.

In addition to the TouchPad tablet that stole the show, HP yesterday announced the launch of the Pre 3 and the adorable Veer. Both of the smartphones will run on WebOS 2.0 when they’re launched. Unfortunately, those who dig WebOS and have invested in the Palm Pre, the Palm Pixi or the ‘Plus’ versions of either will not be getting WebOS 2.0 unless they plan on purchasing a new phone.

Speaking to Engadget yesterday after the HP event, Jon Rubenstein confirmed that the original Pre devices will not be getting upgrades from WebOS to WebOS 2.0.

“Jon was pretty candid with us, saying that Palm had "missed a product cycle" in the midst of its financial troubles and subsequent acquisition by HP last year, and that the older products simply don't have the horsepower to properly run webOS 2.0 and beyond,” writes Nilay Patel.

However, all is not lost. Jon also mentioned that HP would be doing “something special” for owners of older hardware when the new line launches this summer. Whether he’s talking subsidies, a trade-in program or something else entirely remains to be seen, but we’re eager for the Pre 3, the Veer, and the TouchPad to launch so we can find out. Sit tight, Pre owners.

I love my Pre Plus, can't wait for the 3. The contract on my Pre Plus will be over just about when the Pre 3 comes out.

I really think they made a huge mistake by not updating the previous models. There could have been at least the 2.0 update for those devices to fix issues, and implement flash playback (that was showed working before the original Pre launched.) Now, they expect their most loyal customers to wait (once again) for 'Something special'. My guess is that will probably be another disappointment.

I agree with sactodd... HP/Palm is too little too late. I loved my original Palm Pre, but the lack of flash and apps that I actually wanted killed it for me. I love my HTC Evo a lot more, although I do miss the "card" concept that the WebOS had to switch between apps. At least I don't have to wait to be just disappointed yet again by Palm.

Why offer updates when they can sell you a whole new device?

Bingo. That's the whole idea around many smart phones. Its only Google and their android platform that is pushing many to upgrade some phones to newer versions of the OS.

There is little else to make the carrier support a handset that is more than 2 years old.
