Microsoft Backpedals, Covers E74 Error

Has your Xbox 360 been plagued by the recently emerging E74 error? Microsoft’s now going to include it as part of the special three-year warranty.
Microsoft last month stated that the E74 error that recently fell many Xbox 360 was unrelated to the three flashing red lights (also known as the Red Ring of Death).
“E74 is a general hardware error on Xbox 360 indicated by a single red flashing light in the Xbox Ring of Light and an error message visible on the television. This error is unrelated to the three flashing red lights error and there is not a single root cause,” Microsoft said in a statement released in March 2009.
This means that customers who experienced this error outside of his or her one-year console warranty had to pay for any repairs for the console. This understandably upset the Xbox 360 community, as it saw many consoles inexplicably keel over and die for no apparently user-related reason.
Microsoft today changed its tune on the E74 error, now including it as part of the three-year extended warranty that previously only covered the three flashing red lights error.
“While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays "E74" on their screen,” read a Microsoft statement released to Kotaku. “After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007.”
Those who have already sent in and paid for repairs for their Xbox 360s will be receiving a refund shortly.

Damn straight.
Good! I want my 100 bucks back!
warranty or not i rather have a system that doesn't have a high failure rate thank you very much
The red ring of death is a true menace to society!
and this is why i stick to pc's, if something does go wrong, i can replace it
YAY! ya the warrenty is good but the problem shouldnt be there in the first place o_o i like my 360 (since its the only way i can talk to my cuz in cali) but it has way to many problems
Yes... with your own money.
and this is why i stick to pc's, if something does go wrong, i can replace it
It's not as simple as all that. Console gaming is a different experience to PC gaming.
I personally do not have a problem with my three XBOX 360s that I have had. I am glad that Microsoft replaced every one of them under warranty. At least Microsoft is willing to stand behind their product and provide an excellent warranty.
Also, since I rarely purchase games outside of the Live service, the 360 has been the greatest system I have owned.
I would never buy a PS3 that has almost 0 developer support at this point. And I don't care much for Bluray. As for the Wii, it has been collecting dust next to my 360. Too bad Nintendo didn't include DVD playback as at least I could use it as another DVD player....

You fanboys are allover the net aren't you? You "never had any problems with any of the 3 xbox's that MS replaced" for you? Wow, just wow.
On a different note. I still think it's unacceptable to put such a broken piece of hardware out on the market, BUT(!) you got to have respect for microsoft and their return policy. If this happened to any Sony product you'd never see a warranty extension of any kind.
Not hating on any brand here, just analyzing how they treat their customers. I like Sony products alot, but their love for the customers are somewhat hard to see.
Speaking of fanboys...zoonie you are a big flaming fanboy's asshole. If you are going to try and put someone down then at least properly quote that person. I appreciate how you placed the quotation marks around the comment then added your own words.
AndrewMD did not say he "never had any problems" he said (and this is the correct quote "I personally do not have a problem with my three XBOX 360s that I have had."
I will explain this comment to you since you have shit stuck in your ears from spending so much time up inside an asshole.
He personally has no problem with the fact that he is on his third 360 because Microsoft has always been willing to stand behind their product and replace it.
zoonie...you are obviously an uneducated tard that has never made a passing grade in an English class.

Very true. The first versions of the PS2 had many drive problems - no extension happened.

True again. I also own many of their products (laptop, consoles, cameras, phones), and think they are all very well engineered and constructed, but after the purchase...
Some people say "but they keep manufacturing PS2's". Well, that's because they keep selling. Atari would be glad to keep manufacturing the 2600 if someone was still interested.
Yeah, now they fess up after I went out & spend another $400.00 on a new Xbox 360....Grrrrr! I did get a solid 2 years & 2 months before it broke.
JD
had to fix my xbox 360 myself, stopped reading disks, disk errors from hell, called microsoft, but they told me it was not covered and it would cost me $99 and take weeks, so i went to google and youtube, found out how open it up myself, only to find the the problem was the little magnetic ring on top of the dvd drive which should have been glued into place, had come off because it was not glued at all just shoved into place, so i simply got some crazy glue, glued it nicely into place and everything worked. they should have called it crap box 360. or all around crap box.
I have one of the original launch day PS3's and I've never had a single problem. That "red ring of death" is part of the reason I've been reluctant to buy an XBox 360.

How delicately put! I'm truly sorry for using the quotation marks in a wrong way. I was simply trying to be sarcastic about the real quote I made in the upper part of my comment.
If the education you're refering to means that I'll have to use the language of a 10-year old boy then I'll pass.

M$ is just afraid of its recent unpopularity crysis.
M$ is just afraid of its recent unpopularity crysis.
Just noticing a random fact, since the game Crysis came out, more people have ben mis-spelling the word (crisis).
I am on my 4th Xbox 360, and while the experience of repairing the consoles through microsoft is draining and annoying, the Xbox Live and multi-player friendliness still hold my interest. But don't tell my Core2Quad/4870 system that. It is still great for making maps in Source and cranking through Crysis. (Also, I believe PC is a better platform for RPG's such as Fallout 3 and Oblivion.)

It´s been documented that Micro$oft knew about the RROD problem before the release of the X360, and even then they denied it and tried to shove it under the rug. The only reason they´re offering the extra 3 year warranty is because they had no choice, due to the large number of defective units. Now they tried to downplay the E74 error as well, but couldn't.
It seems that the X360 is made with the cheapest parts Micro$oft could find.
I must say that for sure MS has spent a TON of money on making this right for their customers. I am not the biggest fan of MS, but I am glad to see them back track and take care of this problem as well. It's a shame that they released such a flawed piece of hardware, but you must give props where they are due.

While true, what did you expect? They're trying to turn a profit selling a high tech gaming machine for $400. The cheap parts only cost more than that, i'm sure. If they had put high quality parts in, they would have had to retail the machines for $600 or more.
I own a 360 and have had to send it in once. But even though i sent it in around Christmas time, it was still returned in a couple of weeks (half of that travel time because of FedEx) and it works like new.
That being said, MS probably should have tested these consoles more strenuously. I'm sure the next console they put on the market will be of much higher quality, even if it means it has to retail at a higher value.
Personally I look at MS and their operating systems...which suck anyways!
Then I look at the trashbox 360 and say to myself....if they can't even make a decent operating system how are they going to make a gaming system?
And sure as shit, they can't make either!!!
Too bad they don't offer any refund/replacements on their operating systems....lol
johnnyq1233- Your fanboy is showing
Insult nicknames is the telltale sign of a fanboy.
Anyway glad to see MS taking care of this though noone can say they're doing this out of the goodness of their heart. Obviously they don't need anymore bad press.
I realize they rushed out the door to get the jump on the PS3, and it's a gamble that worked, however it is costing them with these repairs and consumer confidence. And we the gamers pay the price by having to without our trashbox, or wreckbox or sexbox or whatever you want to call it for a few weeks. My only hope is that someone in accounting is tallying up these repair costs. I can at least hope they learned the lesson, but loosing money tends to help people learn lessons much quicker.
Read this yesterday at HardOCP.
Stupid thing posted before I was finished. Anyways, I have an elite and haven't used it much. I bet by the time I get the RROD or E74 my warranty will be up anyways.
I've had to send in my Xbox 360 for RRoD, I've had to replace my cooling fans twice, installed new 80mm fans to the top of the Xbox (drilling holes through the top) to get proper cooling, then when the motherboard finally died I had to swap it out with another one from an Xbox 360 that had a dead DVD drive ( it didn't spin). Boy was that fun.
First: replace the motherboard with the old one. The old one needed the new heatsinks to make it work, so that was loads of fun getting those off the new one and onto the old one. Then I had to swap the PCB off the broken DVD drive into the new DVD drive so it'd accept games (the PCB, again, wasn't the problem, the motor was). Then I had to take back off the heatsink for new thermal paste. RAWR.
And it's got four rings again. Sigh, time to reinstall the 80nm fans.
I can easily do with out the 360, It may have a handful of games my PS3 doesn't
have right now, but at least it doesn't make a shit load of noise and overheat and
display the three Rings of Death like the 360 does. And i can play bluray disc's on
my High def Tv, which you can''t do on a 360. I went to walmart the other day and
was looking at the titles for each system and i saw alot of the same, and while i was
looking at the games i seen the 360 sitting there flashing the three rings of death. At
first i was surprised that they would let it sit there and do that, but then i realized that's
what the real product does, so why not display it.
