Man Jailed for Killing Wife with TV Remote

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

A man who killed his wife when he threw the TV remote control "in her general direction" has been jailed for three years.

While watching television in their London flat, Gloria Laguna and her husband Paul Harvey had an argument that ended with Paul flinging the remote control across the room. The 4oz piece of electronics hit his wife in the neck and she started screaming, talking ‘gibberish’ and then collapsed on the sofa.

Harvey phoned for an ambulance and when paramedics arrived, they took her to University College Hospital where it was discovered she had suffered a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage. Prosecutor Richard Whittam said, "It was assessed that she was liable to deteriorate further and neurological intervention was not advised."

According to Britain's Daily Mail, both were unaware that she suffered from a congenital defect to an artery and could have died from a ‘trivial’ blow at any time and both had had cocaine on the night of the accident. Harvey's lawyer compared Laguna's death to the chances of winning the lottery.

However, Judge Giles Forrester cited previous offenses going back as far as 1987 and told Harvey that he "undoubtedly a streak of violence and anger in your personality," adding, "There is no doubt you have a problem with your temper." Forrester said Harvey's behavior was "irresponsible and dangerous" and the combined effect of drink and drugs was likely to have increased the anger he felt towards his wife.

Harvey was originally charged with murder but this was reduced to man slaughter.

Three years for manslaughter?? Its not like he accidentaly threw the remote at her. Sure his intent might not have been to kill her but still she's dead. That guy that uploaded XMEN Origins: Wolverine, I bet he gets at least 5 years.

There's enough _actual_ lunatics and murderers out there that jailing a man for a genuine accident leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Accidental manslaughter is the right charge. He deserves some sort of punishment. If she had not died it would have been domestic violence.

On the bad side of things it sounds like this is something that would have killed her eventually anyway even if she was never struck. Cocaine is terrible for the old cardiovascular network and likely she would have had that blood vessel burst sooner or later.

This a warning to all women don't piss your man when he has a remote control. The moral story don't use drugs or drink when you watch tv.

Why is Exodite12's tex in GREY rather than black? Its hard to read.

And we thought Wii remotes were bad at killing TVs.

Because it's a new account that hasn't been activated yet. Basically, he's a visitor.

Thanks! I've always wondered about that!

Jane you need to stop posting random crap on here. Just because you have the ability to post, doesn't mean you should. Your like the source of random non-related crap on tom's stop it.

I could understand your frustration if they were all I ever posted but they're not. Posts like this make up an average of 14% of the content I post. As far as I'm concerned it's a small enough percentage that I don't need to feel bad about posting "random crap" as you so eloquently put it.

As a side note, I'd like to point out that it's two days before Christmas – there's little else happening at the moment. Finding interesting stuff worth posting is always difficult this time of year, especially when you consider we post anywhere from 20-25 articles per day.

I really wish they would stop publishing shit like this, I know it's technical (technically) because a piece of electronics is involved but I simply get mad at shit like this and it seems to be a common theme lately for toms.

As Jane said, coming up Christmas things are a bit slow.
Aside from: Hurry up and spend your money (or borrow some you don't have) so we make a profit this year. It shows how much you care for your loved ones!

In reply to indigoataxia, thats exactly what manslaughter is!!
Its killing someone without intent....
I think any Judge/jury would have seen throwing a remote at someone as NOT intent to kill them with...

Just think, he won the anti-lottery.... bad luck, i suppose. That's the law.

Some people will complain about anything. Don't even acknowledge them. No one forced him to read it, and his life isn't any worse learning about something interesting in the news. "OMG, I just read an interesting story for 30 seconds! Wah!"

Don't mind the negativity Jane, I like the article and appreciate that you posted it. It's nice to read about stuff other than just tech, even if it is a tech site.

Merry Christmas!
