Angry Birds is the Most Downloaded PSN Game

We’re used to hearing about the popularity of Angry Birds when it comes to the Android and iOS platforms, however, it seems the Rovio game is also taking the PlayStation by storm, as it’s just become the most downloaded game on the PSN.

It’s been a wild year for Angry Birds. Between collaborations with 20th Century Fox and an Angry Birds Championships in Finland, the popularity of the game has gone from strength to strength over the last six months. Keeping things moving in the right direction, Sony has apparently confirmed that the title from small-time developer Rovio has become the most downloaded game on the PSN.

Speaking via research note, Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian broke the news while recapping a Sony US PlayStation analyst day.

"Online continues to ramp on PSN. The PSN currently has 75 million registered accounts Wordwide (half of which are in North America), with over 1.4 Billion pieces of content downloaded since launch,” Industry Gamers cites Sebastian as saying. “PSN appears to be gaining traction tapping into the casual and social gaming market with titles such as Angry Birds which is the most downloaded game through the PSN (it was launched in January 2011). PSN is also seeing good success with freemium/microtransaction models."

Last month Angry Birds publisher Chillingo released a new version of the game, Angry Birds Rio, as part of a collaboration with 20th Century Fox. Later in the month, there’ll be an Easter version of the game hitting app stores.
